How long for 100mg sertraline to kick in?!

Posted , 7 users are following.

Me again! I've been on & off 50mg sertraline with limited success, could not take the depression any longer so now on my 12th day of 100mg sertraline. I'm feeling zero improvement, very weepy & having suicidal thoughts.

Can anyone advise as to how long I should stick this out?

Thank you!!!

Please phone Samaritans now. They are there to guide you and support you. If you can't see your GP in an emergency then go to the nearest walk in centre. You are seeming very low and need help and comfort.

    hang in there Lotty.

Thank you Philip. The dark thoughts come and go, I'll be ok. I don't have a plan as such just would love to live a happy life I once did!!

You WILL be OK....well done Lotty as you have just decided that. Anyway, elsewhere I have been dicussing diet related to our condition. Have you considered the opportunity to really up the intake of Seratonin related foods?

They say about six weeks, until things start to look up. I am on day twelve, and have noticed my anxiety and racing thoughts are much worse. I try repeating , it's just the drug, the dark thoughts happen to me as well, reach out and talk to someone. Don't stay in it, I knit, get my mind of it, hang in there,

We are at the same place then so would be good to check in with each other to track progress.

      Good luck!

      Hi Lorraine,

How are you feeling? Today I've noticed a little lift, not hugely but def feeling better.

Do you experience emotional numbness as part of your depression? I find it hard to feel love, that's the bit that sucks the most!!

Yes, feelings get numbed, and joy, happiness too! Day 14, sadly the anxiety is an emotion I do feel.. I am stuck today,

Hi Lottie, If your having suicidal thoughts you need to keep your gp informed, it is important you make an appointment ,he will know best if you need to change meds or if you need anything to help you till the sertraline kicks in x

    Hey Lotty,

I think you need to give it at least 4 weeks to see if there's any benefit. Starting to feel good about 80% of the time now on my 50mg, but it took until weeks 4/5 for things to start levelling out properly. *However* if you are having suicidal thoughts then you should go back to your GP, or call Samaritans asap.

Have you had any therapy, or got a referral in for that? Doing some CBT might help with the negative thoughts and give you something else to focus on while the medication takes effect. Hang in there!

Sound advice indeed. CBT can be very useful and you can get it on line not just face to face or phone to phone.

I just find it hard because i dont feel like gettin ready to go out & do anything! Im at work tomorrow & friday which will properly help because il have no choice to get up & get ready & to be out the house for 7.30! But the thought of it now is making me feel so anxious its unreal..! Needing alot of sleep so far on these too.. anyone else feel that? I do like me sleep anyway but after a 11-12 hour sleep i still feel tierd & energyless. But then find it hard to drop off agen at night time🤔

You have to push yourself to do the things you normally do, I have learned that. It's kind of a way I fight back! That way the depression can't steal my whole life.
