How long until citalopram leaves your system?

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi, can you shed some light please?

I was on 10mg citalopram for roughly 3 months roughly but was taken off it due to serious side effects and allergic reaction. I weeks off completely around 5 weeks ago now and have been feeling pretty good and back to normal up until yesterday when I started to feel quite dizzy/nausea and body weakness. Is this the usual or should I not have any side effects now? Dr said allow 4-6 weeks but has anyone had these feelings for longer and have they come on after a few weeks of feeling good? Thanks in advance smile

Oh I'm so sorry. Yes coming off them and your 4th week. Absolutely you'll be feeling like crap! Especially as you have come off the very very quickly. Keep going though. You can and will get through this and be ok.  I was on 10mg for only a very short period of time 3 months or so as I had a severe reaction to them. I am in my 5th coming up to 6th week and I am still suffering from brain zaps/ dizzy spells, body feels heavy from time to time but apart from the brain fog and dizziness the rest of the symtoms have pretty much subsided. So I'm on a winner!! Just gotta get my head sorted. The thought has crossed my mind that it may be a brain tumor...but logically thinking- it's the aftermath of a bad experience.

This is all standard and normal hun and all part of the process. It will pass. May take a few more weeks even months but it will be the best thing you've ever done and really in the scheme of things- it's not that long ( although I know it's seems it) I'm so glad you have a good GP. That's half the battle. Rest easy and chat to them next week about your symtoms. But from what I am and have been experiences they are all completely normal to be having these x

Im so sorry to hear you too are experiencing this. Honestly, the leaflet is not a good thing to go by. I have spoken to a lot of people since coming off this and it's the same story. Please don't let it turn you off taking other forms of ssri's in the future if you need too. I did not have the same experience on a different type years ago. If you read up on this on this forum people the same and I have had bad experiences and withdrawals after stopping- especially if the medication has been stopped abruptly or you've come off quite quickly. Everyone is different and not everything the leaflets state is correct for each individual. Try and stay calm and just keep telling yourself you will be fine. I am in the same boat as you and it's been awful. But it will get better and just try and keep in mind it will be a thing of the past. Best wishes to you and here if you need x

      Hi Maria g

Good to hear things are easing up for you. That's great news! Onwards and upwards!

Sounds like you have a dr you trust so stuck with them and any hiccups along the way make sure you keep her informed.

I'm into my 6th week and feeling better only a few bumps here and there but slowly starting to feel more with it smile

Last weekend was rough for me but improving a little more each day.

Have seen my dr and she has advised it may take a few more weeks for me personally so we will see.

Keep going, you and I will be glad when this is behind us and by the sounds of it, that's just around the corner smile

So good chatting to you and having someone there to hate the journey with.

      Best wishes to you xxoo

Hiya, it lasted a good while. Still have it a little and I'm on my 7th week without citalpram. So give it time. I'm feeling pretty good. Still a bit cloudy and dizzy but getting there smile it's a slow process and quite a long one. Gotta stay positive and patient. Something that's been a bit hard for me lately as I just want this over with.

Feels like I have been so unwell for a good 3 months now but it's getting better smile x

Hi Maria, anytime smile always here.

Yes my legs felt like lead and even my arms and hands too but especially my legs and definitely the mornings were worse.

You'll honestly be fine honey but it will take some time. Try and remember this is all just an effect and nothing serious/sinister.

I have a fabulous GP who is very thorough and professional too but even she doesn't feel there should be any side effects as such so I do believe that unless you are the person taking them, you cannot begin imagine what side effects are possible let alone how they can make you feel. X
