How long until citalopram leaves your system?

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi, can you shed some light please?

I was on 10mg citalopram for roughly 3 months roughly but was taken off it due to serious side effects and allergic reaction. I weeks off completely around 5 weeks ago now and have been feeling pretty good and back to normal up until yesterday when I started to feel quite dizzy/nausea and body weakness. Is this the usual or should I not have any side effects now? Dr said allow 4-6 weeks but has anyone had these feelings for longer and have they come on after a few weeks of feeling good? Thanks in advance smile

      Hi Maria,

So sorry for the late reply. I've had two sick babies this past week.

I can't seem to find your last post.

Anyway, I hope things are easing up for you?

How you getting on and how are you feeling now? Are some of the side effects easing? Hope you're getting there slowly x

      Hi Maria,

      Keep going honey.

I am doing quite well. Have my off days but the good days have started outweighing the bad.

I wouldn't of gone on these if I knew the re procushions of this particular ssri.

      It's been a long road.

Try and stay positive. I really feel asthough these are still the side effects playing up. I was only on these tablets for 3 months and had terrible side effects up until earlier this week. If you've been on them for a long period then I'm sure it would be even worse perhaps.

      Keep smiling Maria xx

Hi Maria and Kris...I have read your posts with interest.I was on 40mg if cit Last September I halved the dose myself and apart from one episode of scary dizziness I was fine,,stayed on that dose till June then went to 10 mg then 5 mg then 2.5 mg in the space of 8 weeks .Took my last pill on October 1st ....I have had no head zaps but I too find the withdrawal symptoms come in waves ..I get irritable, nasty even...anxious ..but the worst symptom for me is an uncontrollable appetite !! ..l seem to be always hungry and as you know there is nothing more depressing than being over weight ,.

I cannot believe how bad these pills are to withdraw ..had no probs with Prozac ..but cit is a nasty pill

I too hope the symptoms soon go for good

      Hi pat,

I am in agreeance with you in regards to cit being a bad drug. I wish I could turn back time to be honest and had looked at more options. I was breastfeeding at the time my now 10 month old little girl and was advised this was a SSRI that was safe to take whilst doing so.

Anyway, we can't turn back time as they say so here we are.

On a positive, this works wonders for some people and that's great. Just wasn't meant for me.

I'm so sorry you too are experiencing some of the not so pleasant side effects. It does take time so I've discovered.

I've felt so unwell over the past 3 months I've had blood work, ct scans, ultrasounds, X-rays- you name it! Apparently I'm fit and healthy however I've had dizzy spells-bad ones, heavy legs and arms, lose of appetite and weight, tingles all over my body especially in my hands, insomnia, felt asthough I was falling when I tried to go to sleep. Hell, I even went yellow! It seems that the only cause was the small dose of citalopram I was on. The drs at the ED said it wouldn't be because of the medication my own GP said it was unlikely but she was the one who ordered all the tests as she saw how ill I was and organsied for me to go to hospital as she needed to make sure I would be medically safe over the weekend!

Since coming off 9 weeks ago now I still don't feel 100% well but I definitely am better and getting a bit better each week.

I hope you don't suffer too much. It seems to be a lengthy road when recovering from this drug.

Try not to worry to much about your weight. Just focus on getting better first and enjoying the days you feel really well.

      Well wishes to you

These pills cause weird problems as you've experienced ..I had excruciating eye pain with a discharge ..seems the cit was to blame...scary though

I wish you and Maria well
