How long were you in Hospital?

Hi everyone,

I'm going in for my THR on Friday after they had a cancellation, so three weeks earlier than my original pre-op date. I have tickets to see ELO on the Monday night after the operation so I'm trying to get a handle on whether you think I'm going to make the concert?

Thanks in advance,

Steven

I was in for 24 hours after a revision THR. If you're in pretty good shape, you've got a good chance of getting out of there quickly. Since I was OK for weight bearing, I walked with a walker about 5 hours after surgery. That helped my urinary tract get going, which you need to be sent home. I did 20 laps around the ward the next morning, and they let me go home.

I am almost 9 weeks post op and have had a brilliant recovery. I came home 48 hours after the op. However, there is no way I could have coped with going to a concert a couple of days later. Your operated leg will be very weak as all the major muscles have been cut right down to the bone and take time to heal. You won't be able to get in and out of a car easily at that stage and public transport if out of the question. You are going to be tired too. I am sorry but I really think you have to put your recovery first. you just won't be able to take the right precautions against dislocation and it would be awful if you did some damage. Sorry to sound like a wet blanket but I'm just being honest. Everyone was amazed how quickly I progressed but I still needed about 3 weeks before I could contemplate a trip to a concert or similar. I hope all goes well for you on Friday.

Hello Marion and thank you so much for taking the time to reply.  I thought as much, however there are conflicting opinions and when I asked the OT at my pre-op she didn't completely rule it out.  She also said that some people are up and running the same day as the op!  I suppose everyone is different but I agree it will be too soon to go to the concert.  Ah well my mum will be going instead!  Thanks again lol

Me either. I am 2 1/2 weeks post revision and I still would not enjoy going to a concert. Last night hubby and I went out to dinner at Denny's - not crowded and easy to get in and out of. Nice outing. The car is still not the easiest to get in and out of... the seat is too far from the edge of the car. Height is easily adjustible.

    Hi Steven,

I would be surprised if you felt like going to a concert the day after or the day you come out of hospital, it is not a walk in the park. It is a big operation and the drugs can make you sick/constipated. I saw marion said her muscle was cut, that is up to your surgeon, my muscle was not cut.

Plan on not going but, you may be an exception to the rule.

I got out after 4 days and even though i made a quick recovery i still felt woozy for a week or so.

There's no way you'd want to be sat in the same confined position throughout a concert, and no way you could.

Hi Steven, unlikely I would have thought, though depends on the procedure. If you’re having posterior, there would be lots of issues around seat height etc, and just the logistics of getting to the seat if you’re on crutches. Sitting in one position would be really hard. I had a really easy recovery, but I wouldn’t have managed a concert on day 3.  Wishing you all the best on Friday, Judith

I had my op on a Saturday, posterior approach. I was not allowed home until I could walk up and down stairs which meant being checked by the physios who do not work on Sundays so I had to wait until the Monday. I don’t know if you will have that problem. After seeing the physios and doing some exercises for them I passed and was allowed home. My sister decided to take me out to lunch the day I got home. I just used a stick as I was rubbish with crutches and never used them after I went through the front door. Thinking back it was probably not such a brilliant idea. I had to get in and out of a car and sit for a period. Also I was very constipated from the drugs and had taken some laxative, so it was also a bit uncomfortable. How are you hoping to get to the ELO? How much walking is involved? Were you planning on using public transport? I think personally I would not try it. Just be pleased you have got an early op.

I keep reading about constipation and yes I had hard bowels but they moved. I eat Honey Nut Cheerios almost every morning and has found it to really help me. I also drank almost a glass of prune juice or half a glass some mornings. It all depends on my fiber intake. I try to eat a lot of fiber but when I do not eat it I use my prune juice to assist my bowel movement. Metamucil is also excellent. I do not like too much prescribed meds. They gave me stool softner while in hospital but I still ate my cheerios once I got home. I wish us all happy recuperating.

I had trouble for about a week, also I felt pretty sick from the morphine. I was then back to normal.

If the concert was in your backyard and you had a huge window where you could look out from the bed or chair, I would say maybe.

If that’s not the case, focus on your healing.

Watch the concert on video. Stairs are not your friend.

I was 42 and in good shape 6 months ago when I had my THR. No way I could have gone to a concert 2 or 3 days after surgery. Sorry but it's probably not going to be doable. Even if you manage, I don't think you'll be able to enjoy it.

I doubt you'll make that gig, not 3 days after an operation as serious as this, unless you're lucky enough to be having keyhole surgery.

After my THR,I was out after 4 days, but I would not have wanted to go anywhere like a concert, especially if you have any sort of problem such as non weight bearing, fainting, etc.  At 11 days after the operation I did venture to a supermarket with my wife, I was holding onto a trolley for dear life.

I saw ELO back in the early 1970's, they were great back then.

    Best wishes

    Hi Stevie

I was in hospital for 3 nights following left total hip replacement, posterior approach.  Very uncomfortable and tired for the first few weeks, no way would I have felt up to going to an event such as a concert.  I had tickets to see Bryan Adams 7 weeks post surgery, but even though I was feeling much better, I made the decision not to go as I was worried about getting knocked or barged in a busy crowd.  I was disappointed but in the end it was the right decision.  Good luck for your op and a speedy recovery.
