How many of us have or are going to have there other hip done ?

Hi Everyone

When I first joined this forum I was under the impression that having both hips done was quite a rarity. This forum has shown me that it may not be as rare or is becoming more common.

As I am due for my second hip op I am loosing track of all of you that have had or are going to have the second hip done.

I was wondering if it is harder to recover from the second one or do you actually feel better and heal quicker and could walk further with both hips replaced. I am just trying to get my head round this because I am more scared of having the second one done than I was having the first one done. I know I need to be out of pain and I have to go through it. But I am

Just wondering how you coped the first few days.

Thanks Hailea x

Have just 18 days ago had RTHR, and four weeks before my op I was told that within a year or two I would have to have the other hip done, due to osteoarthritis, same problem with first one. Disappointing for me, can't face it again, good job it's not for at least a year.

      Hi Veronica

After haviung my left hip done in April this year. only a few days later my right hip collapsed and I have been in agony ever since. To be honest and totally honest dont think it may last a year because it just might not. I am only warning you. You might be lucky. But once you have had one done the other tends to go a lot quicker than you may think. I dont really want to go through it again. But if I don't I will just get so bad nothing will help me. I am almost at that stage now. I wish there were an easier way. But there isn't it has to be done. Please do not leave getting your second one done till you end up like me.I would not wish being house bound and in cronic pain for 8 months on anyone.

It;s mot at all uncommon, I have just learned that a friend who had both hers done some years ago is having both of them redone because thet were metal-on-metal and have deteriorated.

      Hi Graham

The metal on metal replacements won't be re done because they have deteriorated. The metal on metal were recalled because metal filings were coming off the metal causing muscle problems and poisoning the blood. From what I understand. So your friend may have been called in to have this done because of the issue with the re call.

Yes, that's what I meant to say .... her old ones were metal-on-metal, the new ones will not be.

So that will be 4 hip replacements ....... ouch surprised

      Regards

Ok I didn't know if you new the real reason.

No they are not really allowed to give metal on metal hips out any more but I have seen folk on here say some are still giving them out and to check your hospital records to see which type you were given.

4 replacememnt ! wow that is a lot.

Dear Hailea, even with the problems I have, a poor 2nd replacement, length totally wrong for me,  probably going to have to have it done again to get it right. Am I up for it YES YES YES, its better than the constant grinding pain, the inability to walk. The damned inability to do anything, bring it on, sooner the better, as i know how good a really good hip replacement can be, my right hip is still fabulous, I have got to the point of saying at just past two years, its like I never had a hip problem on that side, and I had 30+ years of problems on right side after accident.

      Hello Lyn

WoW I didn't realise you were that bad. eek Yes you are right anything is better than the pain it is worse than tooth ache sad

I am glad you are able to let me know your right side is still good and you don't feel it is any different than a normal hip. I guess in reality with it being such a major op you really don't feel the true benifit till after a yrar has past.

Hailea -  must admit the Dr's did tell me that it would be as much as a year to heal completely. They were right.

I got out my before & after x-ray's yesterday and used a ruler, my natural measurement (before surgery) between tronchanter and top of ball of hip is 7.4mm both sides. Right hip after hip replacement 7.4mm no wonder I had no problems with that side. Left side (problems) measurement between tronchanter and top of ball 8.6mm, to add to that I have a natural 10mm below my knee also on left side. It seems at 10 months post surgery still having problems with pain and numbness in left leg, no kick when you hit just below knee. 12mm seems for me to be too much, although they do say it is within the range of normal leg lengths post surgery. Sorry I've woken up cranky.

First off do not appologuise for being cranky. It is fine Been there done that for many many months. I have acepted that hip issues will cause many like me to be cranky so it just goes over my head now.biggrin

WoW that is a big deiiference. I am going to talk to my surgeon before my op to ask him to try his best not to give me different length of legs. I don't think I could cope with that. My right leg now is about 2* shorter than my operated leg because of the colapsed hip. I think this is because I try to get comfortable by angling my hip to stop the pain on it.

Are you going to get that difference sorted out ?

Its now in the hands of the Obudsman, as the Dr's at the hospital would not listen. I am in the process of legal action, but you have to go through the public complaints process first. I have already talked to a lawyer, and she gave me the order I have to approach the whole issue. The obudsmans office has contacted me and my issue "has merit" and has been fowarded for further consideration, presumbably looked at by other surgeons other than my own, so at least they haven't dismissed it out of hand. Will be taking some time, as last week contacted them again to ask how it was going, and they were still waiting on x-rays, etc from the hospital. It does occur to me, that when the hospital gets a letter from the obudsmans office asking for a patients file, the hospital has another really good look at their files before they foward. I live in hope.

I rein really do not blame you going down this path Lyn. No one deserves to still be in pain after having a serouse op which is supposed to put things right. I really hope you do get some where with this. I just hope you get it sorted sooner rather than later because these things can really drag out.
