How many of us have or are going to have there other hip done ?

Hi Everyone

When I first joined this forum I was under the impression that having both hips done was quite a rarity. This forum has shown me that it may not be as rare or is becoming more common.

As I am due for my second hip op I am loosing track of all of you that have had or are going to have the second hip done.

I was wondering if it is harder to recover from the second one or do you actually feel better and heal quicker and could walk further with both hips replaced. I am just trying to get my head round this because I am more scared of having the second one done than I was having the first one done. I know I need to be out of pain and I have to go through it. But I am

Just wondering how you coped the first few days.

Thanks Hailea x

I had my 1st on 25th September & having other done 29th January. Since coming off crutches 4 weeks ago my other hip is making me limp badly & giving me so much pain during the day & worse while I'm in bed. It's like I'm back to square one again so when surgeon suggested 2nd hip op I hestitantely said yes. 2 weeks after that apt I'm saying if have it now. I'm pain free on my right hip but still nervous of trusting new hip. But I'd rather have 2 new pain free hips than that horrendous pain.

      Hi gossip

I never got off the crutches in the 8 months since my left leg was done so I am going to be unsure of both legs because the muscle waisting is so bad I am thinking I may need intensive  Physio once I am up to it. Will have a chat with my surgeon because I don't think he realises how bad I have got.  Yes better to be out f this pain and have temporary pain you can deal with for sure.

Hi. I'm going to be 2 weeks post op on Monday from my second hip replacement surgery this year. First one was March 16. I'm finding the second one so much easier. In fact at this point I feel that I am about 2 weeks ahead with the healing. I'm feeling so well that the restrictions are a bit of a bother.

      Hi Isabelle

Thank you Your comment gives me hope that it might not be all that bad.

Got to remember the restrictions are there for a reason.

I was also more afraid of the second one. I was not looking forward to it either. But now so happy that it is over. First few days were easier this time.

Yes I think I am back where I was the first time into the unknown as so much went wrong for me the last time. I think that is what is scaring me more than anything. I hope mine goes better this time. I don't think it could go any worse.

      Hi Ian

I am glad you are doing so well. It is nice to hear from you

I guess not running any more is lesson learned and I am sure if you want to do any other type of training you will be kind to yourself and just tone up  not push yourself ?

    hi dear hailea,

I am 10 weeks post-op of 2nd THR, surgery on left hip on Spetmeber 10,2015 -

right hip was done on March 16, 2015 - Time has passed and mind is blurred right now -

On May 13, 2015 I had my follow up visit - by that time I had this familiar pain in groin and lower back - An x-ray was taken and surgeon showed me how rapidly the cartilage in my left hip had gone from very mild to almost bone on bone in 6 months time - I needed another THR ... I was devastated and in shock and thought I was a freak .

I immediately posted  my dismay here and then gor all the lovely responses of fellow hippies who were scheduled for their 2nd THR --- same old friends -

second THR wave around same time -

Summer was terrible - poor new hip had no chance of healing properly and I felt I was worse of than before surgery ... If not for you guys here who kept me going, I don;t know what I would have done ...

September 10, 2015 I had THR on left hip  -  freaked out right before surgery -

Pain by that time was awful -

Of course I compared the 2 surgeries and thought the 2nd one was morte painful, only to be told that I should not compare and probably had forgotten the pain after 1st one ... hmmmm

I actually felt great - the first couple of days at home were, let's say, lonely and scary, but I felt so much more confident - And again, that grinding, all consuming pain was gone -

It is different, Hailea -   both hips/legs are getting stronger - I feel that finally I am moving forward - slooooooowly ---- learning to walk properly , probably for the first time in my life redface

I am so happy for you that you have a date now -

big warm hug from a snow covered Holland - well, dusted with snow -

      Hello Dear renee

I am at this time lounging in my lazy boy recliner making dumplings for beef stew and peeling potatoes. That will be my sunday lunch. At least I can do that.

I remember the hard times you had through your first op. I reaslly felt sorry for you having to do everything and struggling to do the things you had to do then suffering with your legs because of it.. I know it was a really tough time for you.

But that is now all in the past. As will be all my problems I had too.

I am glad you are making steady progress.

Thank you for being a good support to me too through those hard times. You are right if it were not for this forum we would all be facing this on our own.

Putting christmas decs up today. Other 1/2 doing it I am supervising cheesygrin

Yes Renee thanks for the kind thoughts, wink It was 55 on 20th Sept, and have at last cleared some overdue depts,  rolleyes with a bung from my pension... just got to get the car through the MOT this week and will think about the EM1,  ideaeek I have the adapter for my lenses from Austrailia already as it was a real bargain price, so committed to buying the camera as an investment in my photography as a business before I get too much older, + new winter Parka for Sandy too...of course...and, we have that already to go... Ski Gogs, as well as she suffers so badly from Dry Eye....it is like getting a Sardine out of a can to get her to leave the flat...I really do what I can all the time, Hailea the Beef Stew n Dumplings...HAHA...just what we had last night...doing a roast joint of beef tonight with Aunt Bessies Roast Taters...no englishman can resist the smaller ones in a delicious onion gravey tweaked with a good splosh of Brandy...hmmmm the Pirate in me surfaces yet again...cool

Thanks for all of you being there all the time...We really do support our problems so so well.+++ Ian.

Mine were years apart and I recovered much more quickly with the first when I was younger. However they were physically not the same with first one mainly being a problem of the joint and not much problem with the muscles and the second had more muscular problems and the wear was completely different.

Age and maybe the difference in the joint made the second one a slower recovery.

Also with them being years apart the first was working quite well when I had the second done. I expect it is a bit different when you have them close together if you are still recovering from the first op. Looking on the bright side having had one done may help in the recovery of the other as you do put some stress on the other leg and now that being done there won't be pain!

Had one done in august this year and second one done exactly 3 months later. 2nd one seems harder and saw the physio last week and she said patients always say the second one is more painful. But it is worth it not to have the arthritic pain and i am well on the way to be able to walk without waddling like a penguin. The second hip seemed to deteriorate rapidly after i had the first one done. Maybe because it got overworked for a month or two

    Take care
