hrt for women over 60

is anybody having trouble getting hrt from their gp, i was on hrt till i was 55 then it was stopped. i felt great on it but have put up with horrendous menopause symptoms. i am at the end of my tether  i am a 62 year old healthy woman, i don't drink, have never smoked, am not over weight and i am not on any medication, my gp refuses to give me hrt even although it would make my quality of life 100% better. I have been told the risks and read about them but to me the benefits outway the risks, smokers get patches alcoholics get pills, junkies get methadone and the obese get gastric bands and it should be my choice if i want to take the  risk and take HRT

    Where do you live?

I can get it from my doctor in Australia, but I know some doctors wont prescribe it.

Hi Evey, do you have more than one GP at your Surgery? If so ask to speak to another Doctor. Just explain it's YOUR  body and you know the risks and you would like HRT. Stand your ground and tell him/her your quality of life is suffering!.

have written to the health secretary and my local health board and still no joy not giving up, wonder how the young doctors will cope when its their turn to put up with this crap ??? It will be a last resort to change my doctor as i have been with them all my life and they know my medical history but if i can get HRT somewhere else I'll move in a heart beat

Evey, find another GP in your area, even find a menopause clinic (you may be able to get a referral)

I would get a 2nd opinion if I were you.  There are a lot of women on HRT over 60 & it is up to you what you put in your body, particularly if you are healthy!

I was also told to come off it last year which I tried for a couple of months but the repercussions were awful so I went back & insisted on having another prescription.

If you can't see another GP then go to yours & direct them to this forum so they can see how many women over 60 still take it!!

Sha, same here .. my GP asked me firmly to stop my HRT Oct 2015 (been on HRT for 13 years) he said at 65 I had to come off .. well I tried and within a very short space of time everything came back with a vengeance! I put a whole patch on and prayed! I had been sailing along very nicely cutting my patch in half so I felt it was a good compromise. Apparently and according to experts, if you take HRT you are preventing the menopause and when you stop taking it, your body will 'go through the menopause' so if you start with HRT (or have to because your symptoms are too bad) then you pretty much have to take it for life. (I found tbis out a few months ago) .. Personally, I need it because my quality of life is miserable without it. It has taken me nearly a year and a half to get back to the dosage I was on, I have been plagued by spotting.. some of these GP's are dinosaurs and have no real knowledge about HRT. I am so annoyed at my GP for upsetting my life when there was no need! I'm 66 now.

gps tell us that there is more risk of stroke if taking HRT over 60 but so does smoking, drinking, bad diet ect. but these people sometimes do it all and even knowing all the risks still choose to continue, women should get to choose HRT if it improves there quality of life. who comes up with the age it should be stopped??? thats like saying every child should walk talk and interact all at the same age  is it not taking away your human rights to make a decision about your own body. if i can find somewhere buy it privately i would
