HRT/Urinary Retention

Hi there, I've been using Estriol cream for about 7 weeks now and Ive found that my urge to wee has gone, and when I do visit the bathroom, hardly anything happens, though my waterworks come back to normal in the early hours. I've drank virtually 2 litres today and my urinary output is about 550ml all day. I am just wondering if things would improve if I came off the HRT as I've read it can cause urinary retention. Trouble is the HRT is to help with Vaginal Atrophy and coming off it could be very painful too. Don't know what to do for the best but I know I want my day time urge to come back, and also for my day time output to be normal too, instead of 50ml here and 100ml there! It's really getting me down.

Maybe go back to doctor and explain he might put you on another hrt I'm on estrogel gel and apart from the odd side effects it's OK for me

Glad your HRT is helping you apart from the odd side effects. Am meant to be seeing Bladder and Continence team in a couple of weeks so not sure if Doc will see me or not but I can always try. Trouble is its a nightmare getting an appointment round here since they changed the appointments system in the New Year. So fed up with it all..

Really sorry Caroline. At least your husband is in the best place and will be well cared for. Thinking of you and hoping you get positive news when you ring the hospital in a few minutes.

Have you tried googling for diuretic foods and drinks, e.g. celery, fennel, tea.  Also, the fluid must be going somewhere, ie. sweat, or are you swelling up somewhere?

Hi Sheryl, No I've not thought of that but will get onto google later and see what comes up. Re the fluid, I'm thinking it is retaining in my bladder as I'm not urinating that much during the day compared to what I drink. For example, by 1.30pm yesterday I'd drank most of a litre of liquid but had only managed to wee about 200ml up to that point. Can't say I'm swelling up anywhere. Don't think I'm sweating either. Then strangely normal urination comes back in the early hours when I've been asleep a while! But it seems to disappear after my first drink in the morning!

Have had any swelling? That much retention needs a Dr visit . Just my opinion. Iv been in medical field since 18 an now 47. Started menopause at 46. On Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy vaginal suppository. Had hormones checked first via saliva. Then suppositories made just for me. No one size fits all pill. You can really tell who makes most of the hormones in this world. Men! I'm in U.Seth. no insurance. Obama care SUCKS. To much for our family of 4. I didn't vote for the goofball either time. He's ruined our country. No swelling or UA retention with the bio. Maybe you should tell Dr.

No swelling Zio . Been to Docs. She's referred me to a Bladder and Continence clinic in a couple of weeks. So it will be interested to hear what they say about this. Thinking of coming off HRT to see if my urination and urge comes back to normal. But then I would be in a lot of pain and discomfort if I did. So don't know what to think. May ring Doc and ask her . Sorry you started the menopause so early. Hope your Suppositories are helping you. Glad you have no swelling or retention. Yes I see what you mean about Obama care. I bet it costs a fortune. I wouldn't have voted for him either. We are very lucky here in the uk with the NHS but then there can be let downs with that too. But yes my Doc knows all about this. It's just that things take so long to happen and there is a lot of waiting for referrals etc. Thanks again:-)
