HRT/Urinary Retention

Hi there, I've been using Estriol cream for about 7 weeks now and Ive found that my urge to wee has gone, and when I do visit the bathroom, hardly anything happens, though my waterworks come back to normal in the early hours. I've drank virtually 2 litres today and my urinary output is about 550ml all day. I am just wondering if things would improve if I came off the HRT as I've read it can cause urinary retention. Trouble is the HRT is to help with Vaginal Atrophy and coming off it could be very painful too. Don't know what to do for the best but I know I want my day time urge to come back, and also for my day time output to be normal too, instead of 50ml here and 100ml there! It's really getting me down.

Hi Shirley,
I know you posted this a while ago, but I am hoping you can give me some feedback! I had total hysterectomy a month ago, and was put on a low dose hormone patch. I truly believe it causes me urine retention. When I first got home from hospital, I could not pee hardly at all. I took patch off, and then I was peeing like crazy! I decided to try patch again 2 weeks later because of hot flashes and I could not pee within 1 full day of wearing the patch! I took it off again and then was peeing again. I have no idea what is going on, but I did read that estrogen plays a big part in bladder function. I really want to be on HRT, I know it is what is best for my body, but I cannot stand the bloated feeling and not being able to pee hardly at all! I was wondering how it all played out for you? Did you change HRT? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi April, Sorry to hear about your urine retention when you were wearing the HRT patches. That is a real mystery isnt it. Yes I have read that estrogen is good for the bladder too. I can understand your frustration and worry about hardly being able to pee though .
As for myself, since I last posted I went to the Bladder Nurse and Urologist. Between them they scanned my bladder and kidneys. Got a flow and volume test with the urologist and he said all was fine. Bladder and kidney scan all fine too. Also gave me an ultra sound to check if my bladder was emptying properly. So I'd to drink 1.5pints and then go to hospital 8 miles away and be scanned then have a wee and be scanned again. That wasnt easy. But all ok after that too. Bladder Nurse scanned me and told me the same. So all ok. So I am thinking that when my wees are only small I must not be drinking enough or my body is using more of the fluid up that particular day.
I dont know if I mentioned before but I have since started with urinal soreness and burning that seems to trigger urgency feelings in my urethera too! Whilst there is clearly a physical element to this, a lot of it is anxiety based. Avoided so much because of it. Darent go anywhere where I might not be able to find a loo quickly or where there may be queues for them. So Ive lead quite a restricted life this last year. Saw the practice nurse on Friday. She had another look at my lady bits and commented they were enflamed and round my urethera was so red it looked like it was bleeding. She wasnt very gentle when she pulled my folds of skin back to get a good look at my lady bits though! Anyway she took a swab then gave me an appointment with a gynaecologist so he could check me over. Said my problem was too much for her to deal with.
I am also working on the anxiety side of this. I know its anxiety because I never have urgency episodes at home or when I am near a loo.
So Im still struggling. Although Im not too bothered about the amount of my voids these days.
I did come off HRT for a while but have been back on Vagifem for about a month now. No change in my urination at any time.
If I could just get rid of the uretheral soreness and burning and urgency episodes and also the vaginal burning, I would be on to a winner.
Hope you soon get the answers you are looking for too.

I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and went on hrt but I'm not on any now as I found with patches they put weight on I would go back to the doctors to see if you can change hrt and explain the problems you have a different one may suit you better

Hi Caroline, Thanks for your message. Sorry that the HRT patches resulted in weight gain for you. You may have read in my post, posted a few minutes ago, that I am now on Vagifem. So we'll see what happens. Will see what the gynaecologist says about the uretheral urgency episodes too. He will see they are partly physical when he sees my lady bits. Wish all this would go away once and for all.
