huge discomfort blow left rib
Posted , 128 users are following.
31/2 yrs ago I had a mild stroke. The morning after I felt a small discomfort on my left side just below my rib. The dr looked and felt but could see or feel nothing. Said it may just go away. Gradually the discomfort got worse and now is sometimes unbearable. It is always present and has indeed reduced my quality of life to a great degree.
I have had CT scan, virtual colonoscopy, endoscopy, chest xray and ultrasound. All negative. I have seen a neurologist and 2 x gut consultants, again nothing.
After all that NOBODY has the slightest idea what is wrong. (this is a time when everybody seems to give up on a patient!)
The discomfort is just like as if someone is pushing their first firmy into the area immediately beneath my left lower rib and I tend to be automatically holding my hand, with some pressure on it, all day for somekind of relief.
Is this a nerve or a gut problem, or anything else and perhaps npthing to do with my stroke after all?
I now have to 'get out of my pram' to get any further tests done. Doctors switch off. Have you tried to push treacle through dry sand?!
I am 67. Has anyone else suffered this problem please?

When there is formation of sacs in the intestinal walls it is known as diverticulosis. When these sacs or pouches become inflamed, it is known as diverticulitis. Left side pain under rib cage is a very common indicator of this illness, and a proper diet can remedy the situation pretty soon. If an elderly person is experiencing intense pain under the ribs and there is also tenderness in this region, in all likelihood it is diverticulitis. (end quote).
I know that my symptons are caused by build up of gas in the large intestine as I was infected with an intestinal parasite which caused damage to the intestine which causes inflamation and build up of gas pockets that cause pain and prevent food from passing through leading to abdominal bloating (all the food stays in my stomach) until such time as the swelling goes down and the gas passes ( I end up passing gas none stop for days!).
Yesterday, I ate half a pizza and shortly after I began to feel discomfort under the left rib cage and this morning it is unbearable except when I apply pressure to the area with my hand.
This does not show up on any normal tests. X-rays should show the pressence of the gas pockets, otherwise the only way to see if the aforementioned sacs or pouches (or other cause of intestinal inflamation) is with a scope. My condition was originally mis-diagnosed (by two young interns) as apendicitus (which I don't have, and they were pushing right on my scar) until a senior doctor came in and listened to my abdominal area and said, "You have gas! Send him to X-ray".
I know that certain foods will trigger my symptoms, but I can't live without them, so I have to eat them in moderation.
Cheers, Pat...

I read your post and please know someone is out the all the way in the United States is hearing you and is truly sympathizing with your situation I don't have what you do but it's similar in a way. I understand feeling fine one day and all of a sudden feeling so bad and having to be taken care of by my husband and feeling the guilt and fear over surgery. Just feel blessed that you have someone in your life willing to do it for you I'm sure he does it because somewhere in your marriage you took care of him in ways you probably don't even recognize.
Are you confident in your doctor's that are doing your surgery? If you aren't then please get a second opinion or at least ask questions of your current doctors and let them know you feel the way you do about the surgery. I don't know if you have faith and don't worry I'm not here to push any religion down your throat, but if you do have any type please hold on to that and to your husband.
I just felt compelled to say that. I'm not wise about your medical issues and I'm sorry I have no advice for you there.
Take care and God be with you,
Beth

What foods did you find that were a relief? Or exercise? Or anything for that matter?
Thanks

Hello
I'm hoping you are still on this site How did you find out that you have "Intestinal parasites" I had EDS screening done, and it shows that I have Parasites, however the Dr's don't believe me. One stool sample didn't show them. I have been Super sick, for the last 10 months! This isn't living. I was hoping you would be able to tell me how you found out that you had "intestinal parasite?" Thank you for your time.

Have viewed all the replies you've had so far and like most of them have the same type of symptoms Initial doctor visit though it was a kidney stone buta sky high white blood count prompted a CT scan which revealed a left hip which needs replacing, a hyatus hernia which needs fixing, Diviticular disease and growths in kidney. The latter was investigated with Ultra Sound scanning but showed no stones but some growths/ cysts in my right kidney. This isn't the cause of this awful pain I'm experiencing which has mad me pass out 7 times now! The hip pain is totally different and Ihave to deal with that accordingly till it's been replaced As for referred pain from the other sources the doctor isn't convinced so has put me on medication for the hiatus hernia and will be starting an antispasmodic medication to relax the colon, bowel, bladder, tubes, stomach and IBS. If the pain persists I will then see consultant and have further scans. Like most of you the doctor is baffled but sadly the pain seems to be getting worse and like toothache is always there Will let you know how I get on in the coming weeks I'm 69 and quite fit in an active job but also have diabetes(diet controlled) Fibromyalgia and Polyneuropathy I dislike taking any medication or having to visit the doctor about issues but the pain…. That's something else!

For the last 3 months, I have had severe pain, on the left side, below my ribs. When I sit erect or stand up, the pain gets progressively worse.
I have had Cscans, xrays, blood tests, colonoscopy, endoscopy, taken antispasmodic meds, also took medicine to heal a scarred esphogus and stomach, changed my eating habits. I have been doing the GAPS diet to heal my gut. Still, no relief.
I have seen my general practioner, a GI specialist and still, not answers and still the pain is there.
It has altered my social life, as the pain gets so bad whenever I sit up or stand. I can't ride in a car, because withing 15 - 30 minutes, I am in so much pain, I am near to crying.
I am hoping that you have gotten some answers. I don't know where else to turn, what other tests I can have.
I do have a hiatal hernia, yet the surgeon I saw doesn't want to operate to fix it. I also have diverticuli & IBS.
Please let me know if you have gotten any answers.

I have found that once I had the hiatal hernia repaired my problem started.
Staying regular helps tremendously.
I also take Dexylant 60mg. for acid control. i have had this condition for 13 years and I feel for you. All the tests were good and seem to be leaving my doctors stumped. Ive just settled in for the long haul.
Good luck! Hope this helps.
