Husband scheduled for Hemorrhoid surgery in 2 weeks

He has his head in the sand thinking this is going to be not that bad and will be back to normal in a week. From what i have read, this is extremely unlikely!
so....what supplies should we have on hand before surgery?
what can we expect for the first few days? i understand it is not uncommon, especially for men, to gave to return to the ER within 24 hours because of the inability to pee due to swelling. anyone have this experience?
all his surgeon (allegedly) said said was to expect to be in "significant pain for a week".
looking for advice!

I'm 47, and went through it a few months ago.... still going through it actually.
My advice, pick up some gauze pads for bleeding, pick up some mats for the sheets, keep the blood off the sheets. Pick up some baby wipes and epsom salts for the bath.
He's about to feel a pain during recovery that some women have said is worse than an episiotomy. Make sure to buy both pain meds and antiinflammatory meds... the stronger the better.
As for food.... liquid diet at first and slowly introduce real food with each passing day.
It's gonna hurt to breathe... it's gonna hurt to flatulate.... it's gonna be a pain where he wishes he was dead.... from random sphincter spasms... that feel like razor blades.... to sharp knife stabbing pains to burning like acid.... and those first few bowel movements are gonna feel like giving birth to a brick covered in razor blades and acid. Hence the liquid diet... or jello, pudding... yogurt etc.
It's also a chronic pain 24/7.... very little relief.... stay in bed and stay as still as possible... wear little to no clothing like granny panties.... trust me on this...
This pain will last 7-10 days.... the dissolvable stitches will go away in about 10 days
Jump in the bath every other hour... to relieve the itching and burning.... and have one ready after each bowel movement....
Of course I can say all this after having been through it.... but no words can truly prepare....
Good luck..... it's gonna be a hell of a two weeks..... after that it's anal leakage etc for another four to five weeks.... so stock up on those gauze pads

Hi, I posted my haemorroidectomy experience on here which is a few pages behind
To be honest in comparison with others I have read, I had a very good experience and would definately recommend getting the operation. Yes the first few days are sore, especially when going for a bowel movement. So your husband needs to drink a lot all day and have high fibre food e.g spinach and have stool softners and just rest.
Everyday does get better, it took me just under 4 weeks to feel almost back to normal. Everyone is different though and react differently to medicine and pain.
After every bowel movement, get him to have a shower which will help him feel better. He will also need womens pads to wear as there is discharge for a good 3 weeks so you might want to stock up on them.
Hope it goes well!

looking at sitz baths...does anyone recommend one over the other? womens maxi pads vs depends for the discharge? what type of wipes?
Is having a BM in rhe tub/sitzbath/shower really the easiest thing to do? i better stock up on bleach!
How much did rely on other people to help you? i am scheduled to go back to work on the second day after surgery i will be gone about 5 hours. should i take te day off and stay around hone? so many questions!

I personally never done sitz bath..I prefer stepping in the shower.
You will need womens pads regardless as there will be discharge. You can buy cheaper ones on your local store as you will need a lot and will need to change it at least 3-4 times a day.
For BMS, I always managed OK on the toilet. As long as your having a lot of water and stool softners like Movicoo you will be OK.
Eat small portions in the first few days / week. You will need someone to help you with making food etc for the first week at least.
Almost impossible that you will be back to work on the second day after surgery..You need a minimum of 2 weeks. It all depends on the individual, but to be back to normal and get back to work and sit etc, 3-4 weeks in my experience.
Please ask any questions you have!

Buy gauze pads.... all sitz baths are the same really....bms will hurt no matter what.... but do have a bath ready to soothe the burning...... buy a really good stool softener.... and stay away from solid foods for a week.... believe me....
Baby wipes, unscented.... non perfumed...as plain as possible.... the area will be burning enough... and pat the area clean.... do not wipe.... it will only hurt more
I've been through it.... believe me it's gonna hurt...
If you can take a few more days off.... do it.... the less movement the better..
If you have any other questions... I'd be more than happy to hrlp

He is very private and would not feel comfortable with anyone else...
i would leave all medication and food, drinks ect within his reach to minimize movement. thoughts? and thank you to everyone who us replying.... knowledge is power. the more i know the more prepared I will be to help him

Hi Wendy
Oh ok I am with you now...I think in my experience, if you take the first 5 days off, that would be better. Reason is these are the hardest days and I could not move freely from the bed. However, if you see he is doing well on day 3 or 4, you could possibly go back to work one day earlier if possible? I think that will be more feasible

Wendy, there are some great discussions here that address your question in detail. Find the one started by Gee11215 called "Hemorrhoid surgery recovery tips". Here is a link:

This thread is highly comprehensive!
The bottom line is that for most people the first week is awful. Things get a bit better in the 2 weeks after that, but don't expect full recovery for a couple of months.

I was going to reply but all the bases are covered, however I would recommend a sitzbath as they have helped me a lot. Also initially after a BM sit over a bath and run a shower up there once cleaned up of course. This will relieve pain god knows how but it does. I have used laxetive for a few days but it was constantly making me go and it was painful so on doctors advice I went on to fybogel. I am now 6 weeks post op and still have some blood in the poo but the doc said it's still early and everyone heals differently. Advice on when on the toilet is not to strain, a slight push is OK(I've been told but not too much) and try to get your knees up, raise your feet on to tip toes if this makes sense. Exercise is good in moderation, walking is best as it will relieve the tension. Not a lot you can do about the pain except pain killers but it will go away in time.
