Hyperthyroidism made me put on weight

I have recently been diagnosed as hyperthyoidism, even though most of my symptoms indicated to hypothyoidism, so much so doctor did blood test twice. I'd put 3st on in weight, felt cold all the time, couldn't sleep (still can't), really tired, etc. (Been like that for 3 years!) Apparently it's unlucky with the weight gain. Has anyone else, had reverse of symptoms. Now I get hot flushes all the time - at least 10 times a day and rising, (I am 52 but have never had a single hot flush until 4 weeks into carbimazole) still can't sleep, some days feel utterly exhausted. Only symptom I can associate with was pounding heart (which wasn't mentioned by doctor) which is very slowly abating. Any advice would be appreciated. Does this also mean that I will continue to put the weight on.

Has anybody finished the course and found that they have gone back to their normal weight. I feel like to stop taking the tablets. My levels are ok now.
Please help and let me know if you have experienced anything. I am also getting tired. Time to time I feel shaky and get moody as well.
Thanks[/list]

Now on carbimazole 20mg daily and I guess I need to be patient to wait for it to work. With hindsight I can now see the lead up to the diagnosis, the pounding heart and rapid heart beat. I was beating myself up for getting fat, lazy and unfit. I hope that I will lose the extra weight, how are others getting on?

I've put on about 6kg in about the 4months I've been taking carbimazole (30mg daily, now reduced to 15mg). I had actually gained weight before I went to the doctor so have a lot to lose! I feel like my weight isn't increasing anymore, its been the same for a month or so. But its just so hard to lose any weight.
I asked the specialist about the weight gain and she jst said 'it would sort itself out when thyroid was back to normal'. Not very reassuring.
It would be helpful to know how long until my metabolism can get back to normal and can start to regulate weight - really don't want to gain more weight.

I've been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid today. Although I've had symtoms of both hypo and hyper. I've had a baby 11 weeks ago and struggling to get weight off. Only to have since gained more... I'm usually a slim girl. About 8st to 8st 10lb max... now 10st 13lb and gaining.... I'm having hot flushes every day. Night sweats and sleeping paternity is up and down. Waking in the night. I'm also exhausted all the time. I'm emotional and very irritable. I'm also wanting to be on the go.... although I'm shattered. I'm also getting palpitations. I'm starving all the time... and eating double my usual food intake...quite scary. Hope this helps others... I'm waiting for an urgent appointment coming through.

And.... the good news folks, when you come off Carbimazole you'll eventually lose weight. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and graves disease, along with mild thyroid eye disease over 2 years ago. I did a year course on Carbimazole and then last July my Endocrinologist put me on block and replacement, block natural thyroid function Carbimazole and put in synthetic thyroid Thyroxine. I'm in the UK.
December 1st 2016 I came off both medications and my thyroid is more or less stable. My first blood test in January came back T3 was slightly high at 6, February blood test T3 had gone down to 4.5 and currently TSH hardly readable, but T4 is now 18.... weight - I lost 7lbs in the first month of coming of medication.
My doctor and myself and I've always said this, think I'm going back to hypothyroid as I was hypothyroid for 11 plus years before I had a lot of stress with husband being ill with cancer and it sent my thyroid haywire. He's in remission and I am gradually getting back to normal.
Before Carbimazole I did feel hot a lot of the time,my blood pressure was on the high side, my eyes were redish - but these symptoms disappeared on Carbimazole.
So stick with the Carbimazole get yourself better first and don't worry about the weight.
But don't give up hope as at the end of the Carbimazole treatment which is not pleasant because of weight gain (I put on 2 stone) you will get back to normal I'm sure. I exercise everyday on a crosstrainer or go nordic walking so that helps as well.
