hysteropexy, posterior repair, Enterocele, rectocele

Hi all,

I'm desperate for some advice please. I'm 38, and had a hysteropexy, enterocele, & rectocele 4 weeks ago. I have one child born 6 years ago, although not a large weight apparently I had a traumatic birth which caused a fair bit of damage. Sadly my old doctors did nothing when I went & complained of various pains etc. After changing doctors 5 years later, my new doctor realised immediately what the problem was & set the ball rolling with a consultant. After seeing one consultant she had to refer me to a more specialist consultant so I had to wait a little longer in which time my situation got a lot worse so much so that something was protruding out of my vagina. My consultant is lovely & she diagnosed my problems immediately & she advised me that I needed an operation. I have a check up at the end of the month & appreciate I will have a lot of swelling but wondered if it should still feel like I have a prolapse? To be honest I feel pretty good, no pain other than slight discomfort & a little back pain. It's so hard with a little one & a husband who works very long hours not to do anything. Whilst I haven't driven yet & am trying not to lift to much I am doing somethings like making dinner & washing up etc.

Thank you in advance x

Hi all just to let you all know my appointment went really well. My consultant was really happy with my repairs, and I couldn't be happier. My mind was put at rest by my many many questions. I asked what grade rectocele I had as no one had told me they were graded. Apparently mine was severe known as a grade 3 rectocele.

Hi, glad your appointment went well - we had the same consultant I don't know if you remember! Glad things are going well. I had a grade 3 rectoenterocele that's on my copy of a letter to my gp's. Good luck for your continuing recovery x

I do remember our previous conversation Donna, I was under another consultant originally but she had to transfer me to Maryam as my case was 'complex' in her words. It meant waiting a bit longer & involved an MRI scan as well as an ultra sound but she was so worth the wait. Although I didn't get her at my appointment she came and visited me & checked my repairs. I feel so lucky to have had someone so amazing. She is a truly a lovely lady. How are you doing? x

Glad to hear things went well for you - Yes she is a good surgeon. I got a copy of a letter from her to my gp after my op saying what she found and the same after my six week post op but I don't know if this is because my care is through insurance at the saxon clinic??? She's referred me to see the pf physio who I see on the 13th but I am worried things have got worse since my post op appointment last week but I'll discuss this at physio - so you have further care now?

Strangely I got letters after each consultation but not after my operation. I might give my doctors surgery a call & ask if they received further letters. I asked the lady I saw at my appointment before Maryam came in if I needed physio & she said no. Was your outcome at post op appointment not as successful as mine? 😢 Or did things get worse after? I hope physio helps x

Hi Yes check with your Dr as they should of got details of your op. Yes things have got worse since my six week post op last week, but Matron has reassured me it could just be part of the recovery as the swelling/uncomfortable/pain seems to have moved further back into the rectal area, but I'll see how things go over the next couple of weeks, have first physio in 1 1/2 weeks and doctors in 2 1/2 weeks and if I still feel this then I'll tell them. Good luck with your continuing recovery x

Its hard as we have such little information about recovery times etc, and then we're faced with the unknown of should it feel like that & so on. Let me know how your appointments go please, thinking of you x

Yes they definitely don't prepare us for how we might feel after! Thank you x I don't know what I would of done without the support and advice i have received on here, it's been the most helpful! I will let you know x

Ditto, Its good to speak to people who have had or having operations similar to your own x

I didn't know anyone who had had the same or even remotely similar so I have felt so alone with my recovery worries and symptoms and I only found this post op but it has been fantastic!

I had mine at the Saxon clinic with mr narkada he seems very good.

My only concern is everyone else has been told a hysterectomy can make a prolapse worse or come back but when i asked him at my pre op he said no?

Please try not to worry, Matron had a very good & positive response to this. I'm sure there were very good reasons for you having a hysterectomy now. Mine isnt urgent for now

Your consultant is absolutely correct Miss30 there's no evidence a hysterectomy can make a prolapse worse and there isn't any reason why the prolapse should return. It's the pelvic floor muscles that protect your repair along with the vaginal wall. Please don't worry.

I don't know how to take that Nit 😂

Definitely take it as a compliment because that's what it is. Your advice is very much appreciated xx

It's unreal how little the information that has been given to me all I got was a leaflet on my hysterectomy its sites like this that save my sanity and stops me from doing to much to fast.

Tried to post earlier but don't think it worked! Glad to hear of other's experience especially positive. I was dissuaded from having a hysterectomy by Physio as she said it creates more of a void. Almost wish had it done too as consultant said after op that I need it due to uterine prolapse! Problem with mine I think is that it wasn't bad lying down, I did get him to examine me standing once, interesting!

Had to go to hospital Sunday as concerned re brown discharge and odour (sorry tmi). Fortunately it is a private hospital through the NHS and I didn't have to wait long. Nurse took temperature and blood pressure and called consultant. He said he didn't want to get duty Doc to do swab so went back in today. I may have a urine infection and he took a swab though discharge better.

A bonus was he examined me. A stitch came out on examination and another has gone. Apparently there are three layers? He was happy with how things are just impressed how important it is not to have sex for 10 weeks. Says would tear stitches and create more scar tissue.

He okayed me to drive Sunday 11 days post op and I have been for a swim tonight.

      Hope you are healing well

My consultant said sex can be resumed at my six week post-op appointment , although I'm going to wait longer as still in alight pain on and off. I hope you get answers for your problems.

Most of paperwork, including something I found from royal obstetrics and gynecology says 6 weeks. I don't see the consultant until 10 weeks guess that's his way. Maybe it's different as I haven't had a hysterectomy? Did you have a hysterectomy too?

I just had to look that up! I think that's what he said he was doing to me,

lifting the uterus but without mesh. Hope the pain reduces.

I haven't had at pain as such, more discomfort. Still have discharge but guess

body is reacting to having sutures there and is healing

My apologies I typed that wrong I had a hysteropexy with the mesh used as a sling around my uterus. So many words doe things I had done I sometimes get into a muddle. Doctors have copied discharge letter for me to collect later x

Hi Matron me again sorry. Please can you advise me if I've got this right. Is a sacrohysteropexy the same as a laparoscopic hysteropexy? Only my letters say that I had a laparoscopic hysteropexy but the literature they gave me on my procedure said i was having a sacrohysteropexy. I'm confused. Thank you in advance x

Yes they are the same. Sometimes the incision is in a different place but virtually they are the same procedure.

Thank you so much I thought they were the same but wanted to check with you. I had four incisions. One in my belly button, one either side & one on my bikini line. I read a vey positive article early on this operation which was reassuring. I think I've been very lucky x

It is a very successful operation, you're right and those tiny incisions will fade quickly as well.
