I am 5 wks after partial knee replacement knee feels really tight and swollen

Posted , 70 users are following.

I thought I was doing OK after 5 wks following partial knee replacement, I have been back at work driving 50 miles each way after 4 days knee has got quite painful again so back on the codeine. Is it common to have set backs when it gets more painful again before getting better again.

Any comments appreciated,

Thanks

I am 11 days post op from a PKR (this is my 3rd surgery in the past 16 months) and still have a lot of pain and swelling in my foot. Also, behind my knee hurts. I am doing therapy three days a week. I'm not sleeping but about 3-4 hours a night. I take my pain meds every 4 hours without much relief. Please tell me this gets better. I am a nurse and was hoping to return to work in 6 weeks.

    Hi Robert

I am almost 7 weeks after partial replacement on left knee I am attending physio intermittently which is quite painfull but am a little disappointed in the overall progress as far as pain is concerned.

I have managed to achieve enough flexion to rotate the cranks on my mountain bike so I just spin on flat roads for 15 mins per day as part of my physio then climb the staircase 4 times in succession but yesterday I think I twisted my knee slightly so big set back today can't do any exercise today so just resting and iceing and hopeful for tomorrow.

Still finding difficulties with the pain which I expected to be at a low level at this stage quite depressing actually

Yes Robert I sympathise with you I am 7 weeks in and still painful although only taking half the pain killers now but had a set back yesterday after twisting my knee getting of my bicycle.

On saying that I only do 15 mins spinning on flat roads per day followed by 4 stair climbs then ice treatment but this set back means no exercise today

Down to half the pain killers now but still no full rest in bed, I am fortunate to have just retired a few weeks ago but not able to enjoy it yet trying to stay positive good luck with yours

Hi..I am 4 weeks post-op for a partial inside knee replacement on my Right knee. The first 4 days were sheer hell and the pain levels were incredible; I was not prepared for that level of pain. But the pain has receded a bit each week, thank goodness. I was driving after 1 week and back to work after two weeks (at a desk), but I still have a lot of pain and need meds about every 6 hours. I've progressed from a walker for two weeks, then to a cane for two, but now I'm able to limp around without a cane for short distances; the cane is just for balance for longer walks at this point. I have bumped my right foot twice, trying to swing my leg up onto a cushion, and I thought I was going to pass out, the pain was soooo intense...overall the pain is diminishing a good bit, but driving for longer than 30 min is painful. My knee is still pretty tight and sore, especially so in the center and top of the knee. Ice helped a great deal in the first few weeks, but is less helpful at this point. Standing for longer than a few min is still very painful. Sleep was/is still a bit difficult but I find that a cold/flu tablet and some concentration on rubbing the knee as I try to fall asleep seems to help a great deal. I feel that recovery is slow but steady so far and hope by 8 weeks to be taking actual walks around the block...fingers crossed.

      Hi Randy,

Thank you for your comments. If your wound is already healed try to massage it and put oil or petroleum jelly . My friend told me it helps to loosen the tightness.

Im my four weeks and just started my out patient therapy, my therapist told me that i can go to the gym and use stationary bike. However my right hip still weak.

I am scheduled next week for lateral PKR and possible total  knee replacement.  Hate not knowing for sure so I can plan. Worried since I am on 3rd floor but it's already so painful and hard getting up and down...wondering if I should recover away from home fee day.  Any advice?

I'm sorry to reply specifically to you..new to this and don't know how to post an original😳. I'm 50 and 7 weeks post partial knee replacement. My main complaint before was the painful stiffness. Was that anyone else's main problem before surgery? And secondly, I'm soooo stiff. Let..like after I wake up, I have to force/ coax my leg into a straight position . Is that normal? When's the stiffness end? It is definitely worse than it was Pre-surgery and that's depressing. Thanks!

Hi ! 7 weeks is still very early . Keep icing often and elevating and doing your exercises but don't push it to much . It really takes time . My issues before surgery were knee was bone on bone . No real pain but my knee was extremely bent inward and I had no strength Or mobility in that knee . I waited long time before I decided to have the partial done . Hang in , don't over do it . I didn't really turn a corner till about 8 weeks and then at 12 it was better still . I am 8 1/2 months now doing great but still if I over do it in a day I feel it in the knee .

Hi there you may need to go back and get an MUA as this can be one of the problems associated with knee surgery .This will be done under anastasia .No amount of physio will help you at this

stage because it's basically a build up of scar tissue and it needs to be broken up .you will feel so much better after its done .Hope this helps and good luck

I have a question. I'm scheduled for an interior PKR on 2/21. I'm 74 years old. I'm up in the air about coming home after spending overnight in the hospital after surgery or going to a rehab center for a few days. What have you all done?

    • Posted

      Hi Sue

I came home , the said didn't need to stay all night with a partial. But I was really fine . Had someone spend the night with me.

Good luck ! It's a long road but worth it .

Sue mine is set 2/20 on right knee so we will be a recovering at same time. They told me wont know for sure till after surgery but if I must stay but if all goes well go home sams day. Hate not knowing for sure.

I'm worried I have a lot of stairs and that's painful now very concerned trying to climb them right after surgery.

Good luck to u! I'm new on here so just now trying to figure how this all works.

Debbie mine is set for 2-20. How long will I need someone with me? I live alone. Can u tell me how yours was right after and if I will need help for a while?

      Thenks so much.

Go home but get someone to stay with you for 3 days. At least at night! The pain meds and swelling are usually the worst by day 3. Psycholgically, being in your own home is better, AND with someone there you rest easier just knowing.. in case...i didnt NEED help after 24hrs but it made such a difference in how i felt. Plus taking pain meds and getting up can be disorienting for some people and an extra set of hands helps.

      Good luck

Yes , I also live alone . Usually the Dr. Says you have to have someone stay with you the first night . After that things were rough for the first week . I just iced and iced and iced some more . Also elevated all the time . I had prepared meals in advance so I could just heat up , I was getting around with a walker. I went back to work at 4 weeks , it was a set back being on my feet so much , I iced as often as I could , I really didn't turn a corner till 8 weeks . It's a long recovery . I had few people check on me but was ok on my own . Hope this helps , ask any questions you'd like !

      Sue,

Ps, i had bilateral pkr on the medial sides (interior). On Nov 16th. Walking 3hrs post op.The first 3wks were REALLY rough but week 4 i was driving. Rough but improving wk4-7. By week 7, less swelling, better strength.

Make ur own ice pack w/2parts 50% rubbing alcohol and one part water. Double ziplock. Theyre REALLY good slushy, compact last and refreeze super easy.

Oh yes Debbie!! I truly appreciate u sharing your experience! Helps me not to worry so much!

Would like to to know how it was going to work the 4th week? Were u able to stand all day? Was it full time ? I'm so confused about when I will be able to work after.

    • Posted

Well.... funny I thought I'd go back at 3 weeks huh! I am business owner and also sell so I sit and stand all day long .

So at week 4 I was given ok by Dr to go back as long as I could move around as the constant sitting isn't good . I swelled up terribly 😩And had wished I could have stayed home another two weeks .

I survived but was still limping and using a cane until about 6 weeks . Had a pain on opposite side of knee ( outside partial ) ( pain on inside same knee )that was terrible. If not for that pain I wouldn't have needed cane . Then one day it was just gone 🙌🏻, I really started to feel better around 4 months . I am at 8 1/2 months now and almost forget at times I had it done . Changed my life for better for sure . You'll be ok ! Keep in touch. I and others are here for you ! This site saved me for sure and helped so much .

Thanks so much! Glad U r doing well now. Yes that's what I was worried about was swelling when trying to work. I know now like today I ran some errands for just an hour and was in so much pain when I got in took my brace off my knee looked like a balloon. Swelling causes more pain and I heard interferes with healing process.

Did your surgeon know for sure u would just need partial or did he say once he started he may do total & wouldn't know until cut open? That's what my surgeon said so just curious.

    • Posted

I think they always say that but he was 99.9 percent sure he could do the partial. My biggest concern is how long it will last . seems so many different opinions.

      I am 58 . Dr said it'll last my lifetime .

I'm new too, Christi. I hope there's some way to stay away fromthose stairs for awhile! I'll be thinking about you.

Thanks! I do think a lot of a person's recovery is in their attitude &I've always been a positive person. I do know that at age 74 I may not heal as quickly as a younger one. You are so encouraging.

My surgery will be a PKR but doc said all will be in place should

the total be necessary. It sounds like our doctors think alike. We'll both be in good hands. 😊

Dr has me staying overnight but my husband is 75 & I was

concerned more about him caring for me even though he's a

great nurse. That was my main concern but after reading your

answers to Christi and me, and AuntEG's answers I feel more

      confident coming home. Thanks, !I've.

Hi can u tell e how long before I can walk unassisted? What kind of walking assistance did u need and for how long?  Crutches, cane or walker?  I haven't been told anything and my surgery is in a week. I have a replacement class at hospital to go to Monday so maybe they will tell me more then.  Also I've been in so much pain since I tore my knee and the then too with bone on bone it's awful so I am taking pain rx now.  How much worse is post op  pain if one is already in so much pain b4?

    • Posted

      Hi Christie

I was using a walker for about a week then a can for about 5weeks.

My story little different. I really did not have pain . But my knee became so bowed in and weak because of the bone on bone that I just had no mobility at all . Got to point I could not even walk . And it swelled up terribly .

The pain after is unbelievable. Worse I've ever experienced. Terribly intense for a good week . Than it starts to lessen each day . BUT - if you overdo the activity it will swell and ache . Expect that . I actually ( dumbly) flew and went to a convention at 4 weeks . Crazy but just didn't want to miss it . Well I survived ( barely ) but spent most of my time in my room icing because I was so swelled and had so much pain from all the walking . Take all the advice people give you and you will know 1. Your not alone and 2. You will get better with time

Thanks so much!! Mine is painful and bone so worn it made valgus deformity which is causing me to have knot knee and I can't straighten or bend it all the way so I've had severe trochanter hip bursitis on that side .

I have L4-5 ruptured disc with pinched nerve so my other buttock and leg have nerve pain . Hoping my new knee will help all that . I have some tears and loose bodies getting caught in addition to the bone worn deep on lateral side . I felt better being inactive past few days the swelling went down and crossed my mind to cancel this surgery Monday. My family is far away and I live in 3rd floor condo. I have not lived here long and all of my besties live far away . I have some people offered to help but still don't know who I will get to go to hospital with me . I've always been so independant.

I messaged surg will I be able to get up stairs after but nonowrd yet. I know I'd prefer to be on my own home since my new friends are nice but not close enough o want to be there overnight even though they offered. They have large dogs or upstairs too for bedrooms.

I'm having doubts. I thank God for this info from u guys it helps me a lot . Doctors don't say much and I am worried since I have arthritis on back . I have 8 bad places amd getting inj tomorrow to hopefully calm my back . They wear off in 45 days at best and they make my hair fall out some but the pain is worse so I am going to get it done again.

I think limping and always having to stand on a pose messed my bald up more . I can't straighten the bad leg from the worn bone .

Thanks so much for your help and letting me vent .

Will do my replies when home!

They lost my blood work somehow so I am having to do it again and waiting at hospital. $408 I sure hope they forget the bill too since they can't retrieve my results.

      Gm Debbie,

Do u think after surgery I will be able to get up 3 floors to my condo?  I really want to stay in my own home and once I get in it's one level so I will be fine till my next dr appt.

Please fight this charge if they insist you pay it. That's ridiculous because why would anyone want to give blood AGAIN!!
