I am 5 wks after partial knee replacement knee feels really tight and swollen

I thought I was doing OK after 5 wks following partial knee replacement, I have been back at work driving 50 miles each way after 4 days knee has got quite painful again so back on the codeine. Is it common to have set backs when it gets more painful again before getting better again.

Any comments appreciated,

Thanks

    Hi Robert.

I am 10weeks post op following an Oxford partial knee replacement. I am pretty much pain free except when I stand after sitting or lying down. I cant weight bear temporarily, until I have flexeed and taken a couple of supported steps. Then its OK. Also pain wakes me up during the night I guess when I try to bend the knee too far whilst asleep...soon know about that.

The pain on standing that I get is new so I guess its one of the set backs that we have to expect. Going to monitor this too see if it improves..if not back to the surgeon. Overall though its better..no pain when in driving position, very little discomfort when walking and a bend 110 degrees compared to 30 degrees pre-op. All in all worth it I think..Keep the faith Robert It will improve

Thanks, Jonnie. Having mine done next Tuesday, Feb. 21st. Feeling optomistic.

A friend had a TKR and suggested rubbing PANAWAY, an essential oil on the knee around the bandage. Once the bandage is removed, rub it all over. It helps with the pain & softens the scar tissue. I'm going to try it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Good luck, Christi...I'll be thinking about you.

Nurse just told me I shouldn't stay at my own house since my condo is on 3rd floor.  It's one level once I do get up to it and I could stay put until my next dr appt.  I've been preparing all along to come home.

I really prefer to stay at home.  Do u think it's possible to get up the stairs post op if I have help?

Honey, think about the times you'll have to go up & down those stairs to go to therapy. It won't be easy. Does your insurance pay for a skilled nursing facility where they do rehab? If so, that might be your best bet. Please think about it.

      Hugs...

    Debbie & Christie et al,

Had my pre-op visit with the surgeon yesterday. He said that after my surgery & overnight stay I would have home health PT, then go to outpatient PT. He assured me that if the pain meds he orders don't do the trick he'd order something else. I feel so optimistic, determined & look forward to the day I'm pain free.

      Hi Sue

What a great comfort to hear all that. Sounds like you have a great support system. Keep in touch!

Just over 3 weeks out from my PKR and can't complain about the knee. Doc was pleased with my progress. Gave me Dilaudid for pain which helped greatly. I'm still -1 for straightness but was 126 on my bend last PT session. The only kink was the home PT gave me a horrendous case of sciatica. Add Toradol to the Dilauded & I was a zombie....slept for days on end. The last 2 have been great. Hubby/nurse got me a TENS machine for the sciatica...took myself off the drugs. Onward & upward!

Hi Rober39119. I had my PKR December 1,2016 did PT before surgery and then started PT December 4th. Started feeling really good and the Dr put me back to work February 15th. By lunch time there was so much swelling in my knee.i would have to spend my lunch time using my jet stream machine. Then again at the end of my shift. Seen the 1st Dr on Feb 28th there was so much swelling from the knee down to foot. So he put me out for 3 more weeks. Now tells me 1 more week and if it doesn't get better then I'll need to see the Dr that did my PKR. This all started August 2016 when I torn the meniscus they did a MRI said I needed a TKR but I was not over 50 so he felt like I would be ok with a PKR. It swells and hurts worst now. My knee was bone on bone as seen on the MRI. I'm like you needing some advice. Should I seek a new Dr?I wish you the best in your recovery. If anyone has any advice for me please share.

Yes maam i have seen the dr that did the surgery. Doesnt listen to anything you tell him. So I request to see the 1st dr i seen. He put me out now 4 more weeks. But said try work again on 3/27/17. Also said if I continue to have problems I'll need to see dr that did the surgery. I refuse to see him again. So iI am in search of another dr. I work at walmart as a customer service manger/ cashier. So I stand and walk alot so by time i get lunch my knee is so swollen and tight i spend my lunch with ice on my knee. My mother had hhers done and i don't remember her having this problem. I wish you the best on yours.
