I am just about to have a HOLEP procedure

Posted , 15 users are following.

After suffering with BPH with the last 8 years, I have decided to have a HOLEP, I haven't confirmed with the surgeon, but I am 99% sure I will have it done. My symptoms are getting really bad, retention and unable to urinate at times. Would anyone who has had a HOLEP, about their experiences, it would really me to consider my options. thanks. Philip.

Before you undergo any procedure get a prescription for a diuretic for retention. One small pill a day for at least a week and you will know if it works for you. There are no side effects but you will have to drink liquids regularly to avoid dehydradion

    Hi Phil,

I bet you wished you hadn't posted after reading some of your first replies. For some reason Kenneth is on a vendeta against laser of any form and then suggests another procedure that hasn't been tested over time.

I can only speak from my own experience and from reading about the earlier version of holep , green laser which has been very succesful for a high percentage of men.. If you read my posts you can read about my result given at weekly stages. I am extremely pleased with my result  but did have urgency for two to three weeks which they say can be a problem but in the scheme of things comes and goes very quickly. I expect my op to give me at least ten years of problem free water works problems. I am p*****g like a horse 300 mlitres in 10 secs, dont have retention and thus sleep through thev night. I'm not going to the toilet 15 times a dayand I am no longer damaging my renal functions by being full of urine all day and night. And, , what a blessing not having to take the two pills again.

I'm 69 and like you have put up with BPH for 14 years and wished I had this done earlier.  If you are younger than you may want to experiment with staples, steam, and vein blocking but no -one knows what the outcomes will be like long term. LOts of people on here have tried alternatives and then gone back to turps [not for me] or some form of laser which does have a track record of working longer than any other treatment.

All treatments are brutal for bhp to some extent and kenneth has demonstrated quite admireable with his coring out of the prostate.

I think the clue is to make sure your hospital  has up to date equipment and your consultant skilled. I had both and I can tell you my result has been nothing less than miraculous.

Ive not proofed read this as its late but wanted to fire it off to re balance the argument.

Good luck with what ever you subscribe to.

ps. And, I'm still producing seminal fluid, in small quantities even though I knew there was a 70% chance of being dry and my organism are better than for the last ten years due to the pills drying me up. So, perhaps I have been lucky but it can be done.

Breeze.  I am not on a vendetta has you say.  I want ever man to have a procedure that is going to do right by him.  Not all procedure work for every man has you should know.  And why not look into everything.  Just because a doctor tell you this is going to work for you.  They really don't know until it is done. And what Lester  said about taking a diuretic to see if that would help his bladder is a good idea.  All men should do anything and have any test to make sure that it is his prostate before he has any surgery. Doctor do not know everything.  I was told many years ago by a nurse that worked for a very good doctor.  They will do many test to find out the problem and if they can't they will assume it is the prostate. But after it is removed it's to late.  We are all on here to give our opinions which we do.  I myself would never have my prostate removed or cut for any reason. I have been through retention bladder spasms bladder and kidney infections ever almost died from sepsis.   It went through my whole body and hit ever organ.  The doctor in the hospital told me I was days away from my kidney failing ( Only have 1 good one )  I make my choices just like Philip has to make his.  But I want him to be sure with what ever choice he make.  If he was not so sure he would not have come on here.  One last thing because I'm done with this.  I don't care what procedure you have just know what you are getting into and the side effect of the procedure.  Because you are the one that will have to deal with them Not the doctor he just move on to the next man.  I also have been taking with many men that has had any procedure. They vent to me if they are please with the procedure or they wish they never had it.  Once they make there choice there is no going back.    Life will go on   Have a great day  Ken

My advice is 1)  discuss all possible treatments with your urologist (and get a 2nd opinion if you don't think you've heard all the options), 2) listen to the guys who have actually undergone the Holep procedure and 3)  ignore the rest.  In my opinion, it is not helpful for someone who doesn't know you (and who has no medical training) to be advising you on anything or giving advice on procedures they have not personally undergone.  Good luck.

I had a PAE 2 years ago, it performed ok for the first yr and a couple of months but I started going back to the bathroom 5 * 6 * 7 * sometimes 8 to 10 times a night with very little volume from my stream. Some nights Od lay down after going to urinate and 5 mins later back up again...lots of sleepless nights. It drove me absolutely crazy, so I decided to go to a urologist and have test as well as the scope which is another World of Pain that I absolutely hate...but it was necessary. I'm now scheduled to have a holmium laser procedure, after all the due diligence I could do about my problem I trust my research and my uro who's perform many successful holeps. I'm sure that I'm doing the right thing for me. PAE doesn't work for everyone. There's a higher chance of retention coming back if I have another pae and I don't want to go through that hell again. The holmium will also get rid of bladder stones that had me peeing blood, and Im looking forward to that as well. Good luck, and I pray you have relief!

Was PAE your own choice after research or was it medically recommended, presumably not by a urologist.

It was my choice, from everything I'd read I thought it was The Answer to my retention. I so badly wanted it to work, and was in in disbelief when my retention returned. After further due diligence after having the procedure I discovered that it works well for some people but was told by my radiologist that no matter who has it the problem of retention will reoccur again, I don't want to go through that hell again right now. For me holmium laser seems to be tailored more to my needs.

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I have done a lot of research about my options. I did have a PAE 2 years ago, they couldn't put the beads into my arteries as they linked to my bladder so would have killed part of my bladder. I know it is time to do something more permanent. I am going to reflect on all the evidence I have and your and others comments and make a decision next week. thanks again for the help. Philip.

No problem.  If you need to talk or just vent I'm here for you. I'm a good listener    I may not believe in this procedure ( Cutting out the prostate ) but we all pick what we feel is right for us. Sometime you just need someone to talk to.  Just make sure you ask your doctor any questions that you are concerned with.  Take care and good luck   Ken

Good evening Philip and any men that is going to have a HOLEP procedure or already had one.  Reading up on it and looking at some of the videos.  I have heard many things but the one thing that sticks out is  the doctor like to do it because he can get a good piece of tissue to check for cancer.  Now what get me is.  If you have tumor and you had a biopy's you will know you have a cancer before you have the surgery.  This is what I am asking you guys because to me it does not make since.  Did you or are you guys having this procedure because you think you have cancer and they can check or do you feel this is the best treatment for your problem.  To me why check for cancer if you all ready know you have it.  To me it's a waste of time.  If it's not in the tissue there not going to put it back. So why bother.  It one thing to have it because you think it is the best for but to me it does not make cents for them to check and tell you again that you do or you don't.  I don't know.  We do what we feeling is right.  I hope we all do it for the right reasons and doctors are not putting scare into you.  Good health to all  ken
