My neuro guy says the lessening of pain  because of eating is an odd thing ????? maybe nobody has ever been so stupid as to attemp it  LOL LOL. I did do the light lunch thing and just shovelled it in while stomping my foot on the floor with pain,,,after a few fast bites it lessened for a few minutes. I managed to finish the lunch(all soft foods, not much chewing required),had a cold drink. The pain is now back with me,,,,,,,are you confused, I am???

First of all, no neuro has the right to tell you much.  They only have drugs.  I tried their drugs for about 6 months and felt so aweful I did my own research and found the TN specialist in my area in Oregon. He does surgeries that get rid of the pain which I did and am feeling normal and fine, no drugs.  I have a numb spot on my face but do I care?!  Eating is a little hard because of it but again, do I care?  The pain is gone!!! I repeat, the pain is gone!  It may come back buy then we just do this simple surgery again or he might do another kind which is more involved. But most of these surgeries are one day, a few hour and only one night of taking tylenol.  Why don't the neuros tell you about this.  I feel like they are paid by the drug companies to push these drugs when you can just get rid of it and stay off drugs!

My neuro is a surgeon and we have discussed the surgical procedures.  I am not a candidate for major surgery because of my age and a serious COPD condition. I'm just trying to learn about this TN that is changing my life.

Just so you know, he surgery is not major, there are no cuts. The sleep time was very short and light.  It involved maked putting a needle into your face with a small bandaid afterwards.  Did the neuro talk about that kind?  There are a few others that are as minor as this one.

Mine is called radiothermal surgery.  They do this for all kinds of nerve pain.  Not saying you should do  this but know that it is an option to drugs if you decide the drugs aren't working or you don't like them.  I couldn't take them because Icouldn't do anything but be a zombie and then theys stopped working so I am glad there are options.  Also, know that neuros are told to do drugs first because in the states we shy away from the surgeries.  They often don't last and cost a lot. Plus they shy away from anything that could possibly go wrong or not work.  The other thing to remember is that the drug companies own these doctors.  You wouldn't believe how they wind and dine these guys, give them free samples, on and on.  So I kind of don't trust this aspect of the whole thing.  Luckily, there is a TN surgeon here that is world known for his work with TN.  My neuro wouldn't give me his name. He just pushed the drugs on me, so I found him myself and took care of business on my own.  Haven't had any pain for quite awhile now.  Just want you to know what your options really are.  The surgery was very minor, a few hours and done. Minor pain and then no problems except for chewing hard food. For me, this was an important option. The drugs made me feel failry aweful, but some people are find with them.  We are all different and it is important to have all options open...my opinion.  Best of luck.  Sometimes the pain just goes away and you don't know why!  I had long bouts of relief at the beginning...years ago.  Then it got too bad to leave alone.  Everyone is different tho the usual course seems to be like mine.I hope you find good anwers for your particular body.

Thanks,,,,,,a recent MRI has uncovered a twisted spiral( abnormality) of nerves near the base of the skull and movement in a particlar position is possibly creating pressure on the nerve mass containing the Trigeminal nerve root. This procedure is considered brain surgery and is a 5 to 6 hour duration and 1% mortalty, at 79 years young I'm not a candidate. I firmly believe a lot of my severe pain is mixed with TN and TMJ working together to give me fits but I'm learning to combat it with thumb pressure massage in the jaw hinge and associated muscles.

LOL I've only just learnt to do that!  I used to lose bags of weight when it was really bad and everyone at work on my return would say 'Wow, lost weight?'  'Yeah' I'd say 'It's the TN diet'!  I'm sure some of them googled it!

Unfortunately it only works when suffering in the lower branch (Jaw and tongue), but when I have it in the top lip area, I'd sooner starve than move my mouth at all!  Unless offered chocolate (chocolate buttons left to melt on your tongue).

hi!I've been on that TN diet,it's mint in a weird kubda way but I wiv u on the choccy bit-ur chocolate lasts a bit longer?lmao! em x

    Hi Dick00331,

I am fairly new to TN pain, but "just as you describe the pain before eating.”  It is so bad!

I get super, severe intense pain spasms at the start of the eating process,  feels like my brain is about to explode.  But If you force it, It lets you eat for about 3-5 minutes without feeling as much pain, or at least. Not as much as when you start.

What a horrible thing this TN condition is… Uhh?

    Why us??? It sucks!

Anyway... Have wonderful pain free day!

I'm new as well, at least since diagnosis,,,I'm still not convinced it is all TN as I really have a lot of main in the jaw hinge but do have some of the facial pains and burning tongue pain and check numbness along with it. I'm still kind of leaning do some re occurring TMJ that I was previously diagnosed with but different dentist's (3) said differnt things so it's up in the air. I'm going to let the neuro guy sort it out.

    Hi Dick

Sorry to hear you're suffering. It's true what they say old age sucks! I found since I retired I've had one ailment after another. Then when my TN returned I thought Oh no not again.

It sounds like you're trying every trick in the book so's to speak. I really hope you find a happy medium in all of this and my thoughts are with you.

    Take care and chat soon

Hi Dick.  I too have found that eating/chewing will lessen the pain.  I make sure I eat a full meal, rapid chewing and a quick swallow.  It gets you through.  Using a straw for drinks helps as you can just swallow without puffing out your cheeks (which hurts!).  Ive found that chewing gum helps me.  The pain is intense to start with but bear with it as it does go.  Weird I know.  Also putting your head upside down for a few minutes helps too.  And brushing teeth is agony but keep going, deep breath, it does subside.  This is 14 years of personal research.
