I had mirena fitted four years ago Sept 02. I initially for the first 6 weeks had very heavy bleeding and a shoting pain to my right side. I returned back to the clinic who gave me a scan etc and assured me everything was ok. Due to the heavy bleeding which had been continuous for 6 weeks I was given some tablets which helped to stop the flow of bleeding. I have to say that since this everything has been fine. No periods with the occasional spotting. However, in the recent months basically since September 06 - 4 years on I have noticed that I am spotting and although I can not say a real proper bleed I have passed a small clot or two. I did make a call to the manufacturers asking them have they had any feedback regarding the effectiveness of the coil after 4 years as opposed to 5 years and the response I got was not it should still be fine. Personally I am starting to worry as why now after 4 years should I start spotting and bleeding each month at a certain time.
Can anyone shed any light on this and have they experienced anything like this towards the end of the life period of the coil?

Super tampax!! And in the last month or so I've become super emotional and I'm sure it's my hormones! I never normally cry and recently I've been crying over the stupidest things and become quite grumpy! A friend suggested it could perhaps be my coil and that I should get it changed but I thought it was suppose to last 5years, not 3!!! Can anyone shed any light on this for me please!!

I have been using it for 3 years, initially it took a bit of time to settle but then no periods for over 2 years. Now I am have regular bleeds... not exactly periods but annoying just the same, and my face seems to have broken out in an ocean of spots. Have you found out anything interesting or helpful from your replies?
Thanks

I've been putting up with the cramping, longer periods, and heavier flow for the convenience but for the first time ever I've been experiencing PMS and am being a royal B to everyone around me. It's getting to the point where I'm going to want to get Mirena removed if this doesn't get better. Does anyone have words of advice???
Thanks!

Hi everyone.
Thank you for all your stories. I am having similar issues as you.
I am unable to get a straight answer from my doc or the hours of research online.
Everything talks about Mirena lasting 5yrs, and about insertion side affects, and removal for getting pregnant. Nothing official admits that at 3 yrs the effectiveness wears out. Nor what symptoms to look for or which are normal.
I'm actually getting a little mad, because not all of us are taking Mirena for pregnancy, but, period control.
So, I'm at 3yrs of having my second Mirena. Getting a regular monthly period. Nowhere near as heavy as normal, but, requires a pantyliner. The period pain that comes with that also. Feeling flat and not very interested in the world around me. Constantly tired.
I got this exact same way at 3yrs in, to my last Mirena insert, but, my doc says 'no - you are not due yet. It's not 5yrs.'
It's impossible that it's a flat 5yrs for every single woman, as our body's are all a little different and react to our environments differently.
There was a post above that said that the Mg delivered is lower over time. I'm going to see if I can find this info also.
Seems like it's in the best interest of the manufacturers to be hush hush about it. But, im finding this irresponsible and very frustrating. We need the truth so we can decide what to do.
We all know our bodies better than the doc, and I say, go back to them and demand it be replaced. That's all I need, in my situation, not complete removal.
Thanks for listening to my rant. Good luck to you all.
