I have bronchiectasis and was diagnosed approx. 35 years ago.

When I went to the Chest Clinic some weeks ago I had a routine chest x-ray.

It came back showing some white spots on my lungs.

I was then sent for a CT scan, and worried whilst waiting for the results.

The Radiologists findings were, that a round new abnormality was found in my left lung. He thinks this is most likely an area of bronchiectasis filled with mucus.

I have to go back to the clinic in six weeks for another x-ray.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has experienced anything similar.

wow!...Australia, how wonderful...perhaps the blue mountains would have clean air. I live near Manchester in a suburban area, on the hill side...I really think the hills help with exercise. My husband and I have also had a holiday in Wales which was good.I have had a rough time, but this summer has been so good and I feel so well.

    Blessings,

Hi Lesley, not sure what is happening here as your reply to me about Australia is meant to be for adawoolsey.  I live in Greater Manchester too, but no hills around here.

I live in rural Argyllshire in Scotland where the air is as clear as can be but I still have my problems but of course, I spent much of my life in the big city amongst the fumes and dust so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that my lungs have got worse.

Yes Stella, I have had this happen many times and by now have become used to it. There are many way in which it can be dealt with such as major antibiotics, intense physio and washout by flexible bronchoscope. I wouldn't be surprised if you are offered a bronchoscopy to take a closer look and to take samples of the gunk. It is then that it can be suctioned out and the area washed free of stuff. A bronchoscopy can be a daunting prospect but trust me, I have dozens and they are quite simple and not in the least painful. You will be given a sedative and some painkiller via an I/V which can be topped up as required. Your nose and throat will be sprayed with a local anaesthetic. You wil feel little or nothing and most people drift off into a jolly twilight world and remember little afterwords. I tend to refuse the I/V drug because I want to be fully aware so that I can see the TV monitor. You seem to be in good hands so I would put my trust in them. Good luck!

      Hi Hayley,

Don't worry, I had an enourmous lung bleed after being treated for indigestion for a very bad productive cough. After a CT scan it was such a relief to finally have a diagnosis, it was Bronchiectasis and antibiotics, have sorted it out. Not a cure, but managable.

Let me know how you get on, the blood is a sign of a lung infection.

      Blessings,

hi lesley thanks for getting back to me,im just worrying that theyve found something as they made him an apointment for a week after, and why does he have to see the consultant,i think im just getting really worried over nothing, its just i keep looking on the internet and cancer keeps coming up stressing me out,i dont think hed be able to train like he does if it was something serious, why do they do ct scans?is it because theyve seen something in the xray or just to look further,im glad yours turned out good im hopin ours will to

      Hi Hayley,

The CT scan will detect bronchiectasis if it is there, no doubt nothing showed up on the xray. My xray was clear, but the later CT scan showed a very different picture. In bronchiectasis, one or more of the bronchi are abnormally widened. This means more mucus than usual gathers there and this will only show up on a CT scan.

If it is bronchIectasis it is necessary to have a specialist to deal with this as they have specialist knowledge in the subject.

I am sure that everything will be fine and I look forward to hearing from you with a positive result.

All my prayers and blessings for you and your boyfriend,

      Lesley

does it sound like bronchiectisis to you?he coughs alot in the mornings not in the night though it seems to be when he gets up,hes always clearing his throat an he said he feels wheezy and out of breathe sometimes, but he jogs ok 3 times a week and keeps fit  and doesnt smoke he said it feels like hes go phleym on his chest that he needs to clear xx

...it does dound like bronchiectisis, in which case it can be managed although not cured. I have never smoked, but it sounds similar to mine...these specialists know all about it and are very clever...it will all be sorted.

hopefully wel get it all sorted tues ive started to stress again now,im wondering why he has to see the consultant after?or do you usually see the consultant after a ct scan?he was meant to go back to see the consultant 2 days after the scan but wev managed to get one the same day but later on in the afternoon

That is the procedure, the consultant is in charge of the treatment and he gives any results; or it could be one of his team who works with the consultant that gives the results. It sounds fine to me...been there, done it, They are so good at the hospital and very thoughtful. If you have any questions, ask the consultant while you are there and ask to see the scan. They can show you on the computer. It will be ok...I look forward to hearing how you get on.

      Blessings,

    • Posted

...you are correct, they would have told you. I am sure that they are giving a CT scan because they couldn't find anything with the Xray. They are so good and check everything, trust the hospital, ...
