I have an endoscopy for my stomach pains ive been getting and im really scared! I have a few questions and id love to hear other people's experiences aswell please!
How thick is the tube?
What does sedation feel like?
Does the throat spray make you panic?
How long does it last?
Will I get my results straight away?
Can my mum and boyfriend be in the room with me?
Can i sit up instead of lying down?
Thank you!

Hi shauna75989,
I'm not sure if you've had your endoscopy yet but I just had mine this morning and wanted to share my experience.
I have to say that the worst part was the waiting. Check in was at 9:30am, my procedure was set for 11:00am, so it felt like FOREVER. They finally called me back to prep me around 10:40am where I was asked to remove everything from the waist up...and my shoes; and put on a gown. Then...more waiting. Thankfully my husband was allowed to stay with me for this part. Finally, a nurse came in and took my vitals, asked a ton of questions and placed the IV (as I opted for sedation). Once that was over, everything else went pretty fast). I was wheeled down the hall where I sat for a little over five minutes in the hallway outside the procedure room while they cleaned it after the procedure before me. They wheeled me into a fairly small room that had soft music playing and the nurses (one female, one male) were SUPER nice and even joked around with me. They took my vitals again and set my up with some oxygen (the tubes that rest just inside your nostrils). They have you turn over on your left side and place a towel under your head..I'm guessing in case you drool lol and place a circular mouth piece in your mouth and have you bite down in it.
I'm glad I asked for sedation because the last thing I remember is the female nurse telling me she was inserting the sedative into the IV and it must have kicked in right away because the next thing I knew I was awake and being wheeled into recovery. We wheeled past the waiting room where my husband was waiting and he walked with us to recovery where they have me some water, took my vitals one more time and the doctor came in to talk to us. He found nothing visibly wrong but took a biopsy of my throat and stomach (have to wait two weeks for results).
After that, I was able to get dressed and go home. I spent about 15 minutes in recovery. I didn't feel like anything happened afterwards. My throat was not scratchy and didn't hurt. I went and got my coffee afterwards, since I couldn't have it in the morning haha and my husband and I treated ourselves to a few hours at a local casino
Sorry for rambling on but I wanted to be as specific as possible about my experience (I'm in the U.S.)
I hope this helps; either you or anyone else needing reassurance. To be honest, I feel kind of silly now for being so nervous but it was definitely A LOT easier than I pictured in my head. My advice, although easier said than done, is don't stress too much about it. I think the worst part is when we over think it.
Best of luck!!
