I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!

Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

Peter10.. Definitely. I hardly get the urge to urinate during the night and now daytime.. and I know I drink enough fluids! A whole gallon of water to be exact! I'm short of breath a lit with this medication and I tried to go without taking it and lasted a day and a half...(crying)..I so badly want to get off these drugs!! They have aggravated me, constipated me to the 10th power, made me afraid to eat anything because everytime I eat, I get dizzy.. I cry all the time because this medication makes me feel miserable. I don't feel like doing anything I used to do because of these side effects.. I've gone from hospital to hospital.. I don't know what else to do.. and Jason71.. When I trying not to take the amlodipine.. my anxiety got so bad until it drove ny pressure up to 144/98.. Mind you all day long it remained between the 120s/80s.. it even went down to 107/68.. I have anxiety attacks at times and since that causes your pressure to rise the hospital gave me atenolol to get it down. That was the beginning of all this foolishness!! I wish I would've NEVER took that first pill!!!

honestly it can be a few weeks before it lifts. im on week 10 and most of my symptoms have calm down. i sometimes still have brain fog and i can feel my heart beat in the back of my head that just started a few weeks ago . after stopping my ears started to ring. they still ring but not as loud.. i still get gas chest pain from time to tome. but it is a process.

    Hello all,

I am happy to report that I have weaned myself off both the .5 Amlodipine and .1 Clonidine combo.

I cut back gradually to get off per doc's orders. I also stopped taking Simvastatin which was really making me sick with these 2 drugs. I am now on 25mg HCTZ at least until we can ascertain if this will be enough to keep bp down. I have compromised kidney function having had a childhood kidney disease so we shall see if this is adequate and safe.

I am very confident that the Amlodipine alone was the culprit in making me want to sleep constantly and making my muscles very weak. I hope you will all find a way to change your meds as I did. I think this Amlodipine is absolute poison! Good luck. God Bless.

Wow Congratulations Donna!! I'm happy for anyone who succeeds in getting off this crap Hopefully I'll be next to get on regimen with something that makes no changes to my life. I wanna go back to being normal. The way I used to feel prior to being on Norvasc. Then I wouldnt mind taking ir, since I wouldn't feel different in any way. If I could go back to the days that I didn't have to take meds, I'd do it in a heartbeat!

Good Morning, Have read the last few posts and am amazed with the comments i have now been on Amoldapine 5mg now for 2 months and have never felt better my BP is stable at 125/75 which is fantastic but that could also be due to going to the gym as well, the only side effect i had was a headache atthe very beginning but no other side effects i sleep well and not breathless dizzy or anything so i will continue to take this until advised otherwise

Well all medications work differently. Some do well with some people and some don't. I for one barely took medicine to relieve a pain, or cure a common cold.. I always let my body fight it off. And just getting more rest and eating soup n saltines with a glass if orange juice. That's always seemed to do the trick. I wish it was what would do the trick now. Glad to hear it does you some good cupcake52.

Hi I am 58 and had a brain haemorrhage 6 years ago, I have been on 50mg losartan since then with no problems but in the last couple months my bp has stayed about 179/97 and I have increased to 100mg but it has not lowered, today my dr added Amlopidine, but I have read all the stories and Iam now terrified of starting them , should I ask my dr for a different drug or see if I can just increase the losartan if that's possible would appreciate your views.

    Thanks

Hi. I was on 5mg Amlodopine and 10 mg Lisinopril for high BP. worked for a bit then started to creep up again, so doctor increased amlodopine to 10mg. I did not become a zombie or have the severe issues described by many here. I am 46 and otherwise very healthy and cycle about 70 miles a week. I did however get issues with calf muscles, with my right calf regularly 'popping'. It didnt exactly pull as such but felt like it. v painful. as it happended didnt really impact on cycling, but trying to walk or run was v bad. mostly gone now but left with occasional issues and swollen ankles. Gonna see if my doc can reduce amlodopine and try sommit else....

I wonder if Dr gives me something else and I google it will i find horror stories about that

Drug, will all BP drugs have their own horror story ? .and is it a case of trial & error ?

I don't want to upset Dr by asking only to find they are all as bad as each other. Don't know what to do for the best.

If this medication has to be taken, take it in the morning, else it affects the sleep.

Also, when this medication is taken, the brain goes into hyper active, chattering and becomes restless. Leading to severe tiredness. Aches and fatigue of the brain leads to down feeling, and concentration issues.

Better to reduce salt intake and with help of exercie its better to keep blood pressure low.

Hello kan, thank you for replying. I think I would rather go down the diet route if I can. I checked the salt per

Slice and it was a whopping .43 so it will defiantly be wholemeal bread from now on. I have never checked

Salt content before. I have been checking out some books that may be helpful on what's good to eat and

What's bad. Would you know if the range of Dummies books are any good. My cholesterol is high but my Dr

Doesn't want me to take medication but to try to lower it by diet, which I have to admit worries me a bit

As it makes me a higher risk considering I have already had a Subarachnoid haemorrhage. Any help

Appreciated. Not got the hang of posting yet. Should I not be pressing return button to get whole word

    Together ?

    Glad I found this!

I felt as if my head was going to explode on occasions, othertimes I felt totally disoriented. All gone now that I've stopped taking amlodipine.

Does anyone know if it can cause arrythmas or atrial fibrilation as I've had 2 episodes of this since I started taking the drug.

Yes, Vulture. See my post about a month ago. I couldn't believe how terrible I felt. I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest. I actually thought I would die in my sleep, if I could even get any sleep! I hope you find a solution to your medical needs without having to take any of these dangerous drugs. Check into some of the advocates of healthy eating to prevent and reverse heart disease and many others. I am finally on a raw living foods diet. I am off all medicines escept my thyroid. Good luck!
