I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!

Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

Hi, I been on Amlodipine for over a year. I have suffered from dizziness, light headedness, heart racing out of nowhere, blood presure shooting up and droping, and recently anxiety, and depression. Which I never suffered from before starting the AM. My dr took me off the AM last week. I was wondering how long does the side effects of the AM stick around after stopping?

Thanks LynnCS & alvin1. I am taking lisinopril for high blood pressue which doesn't seem to cause any problems. About 2 years ago my doctor wasn't satisfied that it was controlling my blood pressure properly so she added amlodipine as well. A few weeks later I had an arrythmia which stopped after about 3 hours, before I could seek medical help. Subsequently I was referred to a cardiologist who could not find anything wrong. A few weeks ago I suffered another one. This time I went to a & e and they restored the rythm back to normal, again they found nothing wrong. I wondered about amlodipine as I had heard bad reports of it before, now I'm stopping it as other people have had similar problems to me. I've bought a bp monitor and my bp is a reasonable 131/78, I'm also trying something called the DASH diet which it is claimed can lower bp significantly (it's not a fad diet, it just concentrates on healthy food). Hopefully I may be able to tell Big Pharma what they can do with all of their poisons.

I am on the ExForge tablet which contains 5 mg of AMLODIPINE and 180mg of Valsartan.

The worst side effect for me is that i get a FLUSHED FACE and hot around the ears especially when i am in a closed space with the heating on when my face becomes as Red as beetroot.

People keep asking if am ok.

Should I change medication or bear the flushing side effect?

I have been on slowly increasing doses of Lisinopril for 19 years, ( 2.5mg to start, now up to 20mg) I have never had any bad effects from it, but with increasing age, the blood pressure goes up, bit by bit. 9 months ago, my doctor added 5 mg of Amlodopine to the daily dose of Lisinopril. I was taking statins too, originally 40mg, but had some unpleasant side effects from that, and so I try to diet control the fats in my blood. I was still taking 10mg of simvastatin, up to 31st October 2012.

I was becoming lethargic, both mentally and physically, with pains in my legs, and feelings of depression

which was most out of character for me.

By thinking back over time, I realised the slowly increasing bad symptoms coincided with taking statins. I stopped taking them at once, and am continuing to diet control.

All the leg pains vanished, the lethargy has gone, the depressed feelings have gone..and my blood pressure, is staying steady, thanks to Amlodopine, Lisinopril, and no statins!!.

I just wonder how many people on here are also taking simvastatin, on top of their blood pressure

    control drugs?

I have been on this for years and suffered all of the above, I have been searching for a long time to find if anyone else suffered and then googled and came across this My doctors and hospital doctors havedismissed my pains as nothing, it is so annoying when somedays I cant walk for the pain in my feet and

legs, my weight has gone up by over 50 pounds and I cant stop it I amn in slimming world I have given up all alcohol all apartame diet drink I only drink water, and 3 teas a day with skimmed milk, I dont eat anything fried, reduced my salt and dont touch processed food and still nothing is coming off.I swim most days as I can swimthrough the pain as there is no weight bearing down on my legs, I am at the point now where I am going to give up the tablets as my BP not reducing this indicates to me too that they cant be working,

So glad you found swimming. It must be horrible to be in so much pain just trying to get your bp down. Get on to Dr. John McDougall's discussion boards and talk with people who have dropped a lot of weight, (like me) and who have restored their bodies to a healthy state, including normalizing their bps. Join us in a natural quest for letting our bodies heal us. You are well on your way with what you are already doing.

Wow, glad I found this site and all of the comments. I too was prescribed Amlodopine and gradually found I became less and less interested in doing anything, previously I could never sit still but after taking Amlodopine I didn't even want to take the dog for walk let alone decorate or garden or go on holiday or go to work, just wanted to sit in front of the TV. My GP stated it was due to "pressures of life" however within few days of stopping Amlodopine I was back to normal!!!! fanatastic feeling.

I carried on using the prescribed Enalapril, stopped drinking, imroved my diet and now BP is around 135/75, still slightly high but I've got my life back.

Why do GP's not discuss this side effect of Amlodopine?

Amlodipine - "I sometimes wonder how many drugs would be prescribed if GP's had to take them for a month before giving them to their patients!"

This could not be a better statement.

I have read all the postings and these are my comments:-

    (1) I am presently on amlodipine - it is so powerful i.e. feeling sluggish, tied, pins and needles, hair loss, painful eyes, dry mouth, headaces.

    (2) I was prescribed 5mg and started to walk and stagger as if I were drunk!

    (3) GP said ok take 2.5mg - which I am taking but only in the night.

    (4) When I take this medicine it knocks me out. That is why i dont take it in the day because I would not be able to function.

I am however determine to find natural remedies to remedy my BP. It presently fluctuates from 139/85-155/97.

Whenever I go to my GP i feel as if I am being a nuisance. I am however determine to come off of this tablet within the next three months.

    I am presently taking:-

    (a)Cod liver oil

    (b) flaxseed oil

    (c) garlic capsules

    (d) Vit D

I also do a lot of juicing and exercise for 30 minutes a day. It is only after I have exercised that my body becomes warm again. The medicine i am sure suppresses one's immune system

At present I am determined to find an alternative but as we all know once they start you on these medications it is difficult to come off.

I was prescribed seretide 50 by my GP and symbicort 200 by the hospital. After my own extensive research I found that I was Vit D deficient. Now i do not take the blue pump ( previously 7-8 times a day). I am on the brown pump 100. Steriods is difficult to come off.

I am a strong believer in God. if we do not take control of our own bodies, we will perish through lack of knowledge!

Just been prescribed Amlodipine 5mg for high blood pressure. I read the leaflet with the tablets where it is quoted as very common to get swollen ankles due to water retention. Then I read the common side effects, thenthe uncommon (more than 1 in 1000 but less than 1 in 100) which sounds horrific........... Then dug a little and found this site.

To say I'm concerned is an understatement. I feel so much for all you who have suffered horribly and whose lives have been put on hold.

I will be going back to my Doctors to discuss this medication but I'm a wimp when it comes to talking to them and I really don't know how to say 'I'm not taking this give me something else' with any authority. They will tell me not to believe everything on the Internet etc. but I certainly don't want to have the experiences you have all had (with some exceptions I know)

Is it really banned in some countries or is it just a story, can anyone point me to this.?

Any helps or suggestions would be appreciated.

Now to have a look at some self help sites!

Hi moonie....The problem is that this medicine is so toxic that you are introducing a new poison to your system, creating yet a new problem. Depending on your level of disfunction with the high BP, Get on a high raw/ high fruits and vegis diet and your bp will plummet. I don't know if you have weight to lose, but there are lots of Drs. on the Youtube who you could take a look at who have reversed heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes etc. Check out Drs Esselstyn, Dr. Ornish, and many more. You can do it! I've got off antidepressants, lost a lot of weight, still more to go, but my bp and blood sugars are normal...etc.

Hi, I joined this thread when I started 5mg of amlopodine around 7 months ago. I wandered had anyone else noticed a weight gain? I've noticed nearly 2stone which is so unlike me. I can only put it down to these tablets as its crept up an up the more I've taken them. My bp has also only fallen from 175/110 to 160/10. I am only 34. Anyone else gained any weight on them ? Thanks

Please ask your Doctor to Prescribe NORVASC brandd, I think original BP bill by Pfizer. This seems to have no side effects such has sleeping issues, leg cramp, tiredness, and fatigue.
