I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!
Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

I had been running bp of around 137/90 for years and was concerned and asked my doc about meds, he said no. Then my prehypertension went full blown and caused my aneurysm to burst in my brain. Lucky to be alive here. So I get out of hospital and have a new doc who prescribes me amlodipine for around 2 months. I was getting horrible chest pain however I had much difficulty staying asleep. My bp was running an average of 140/90 on this drug - not doing anything for me. So I asked my doctor for Lisiniprol HCTZ and within one tablet, my blood pressure dropped to 110-120/80-90. Varied between pretty normal ranges. I've now been on the new drug for over 2 months and it works awesome for me and really relieves my anxiety. I am having no side effects from the Lisiniprol. Now I have to only worry about the high triglycerides in my system. Good luck getting the right medicine. I see many people taking huge doses of bp meds. I've actually found that increasing the dosage never helps, instead the best thing to do is experiment until you find one that works with your body. Get better all

Also, never go completely off of your bp meds, top number of 180 is life threatening and should not be ignored. I learned first hand and hanging on to life by a thread for 2 weeks was no fun. You guys please take care of yourselves and know that high bp as I have been reading people have can lead to horrible consequences, there is a reason it is called a silent killer - please be careful

Hello Nigel
I too take Amlodipine with terrible lower back pain and tingling and numbness of a few fingers. I I know that some of this lower back pain is because I am overweight but I have never experienced such terrible pain is this . I have spoken to my doctor I have asked her to change my medication and she brushes me off and says you need it and I have told her repeatedly is mostly all blood pressure medicine has side effects and a lot of them I take have lower back pain problems pain is so bad that I have to put ice packs on my back or heat and I can't take ibuprofen because I take Coumadin and you can't take too much Tylenol because it's bad for the kidney

Hey Nigel. Sorry you're going through this. I found comfort in this site because I'm 38 and an asthmatic. Since I've started taking norvask. I've experienced shortness if breath, rapid heartbeat. And anxiety attacks. I've only been on it for about a week and I've called off work and ended up in the ER on Thanksgiving. I'm miserable!! I feel like not taking it at all. My doctor has the nerve to say it's normal and give it about 2-3weeks. It's definitely taken my livelihood. I can't make plans because as soon as I take the pill I'm spending time wheezing, catching my breath and trying to calm myself down. After doing all of that for a few hours. I just want to lay down.

I am on lisinopril and doc just added amlopedine. I was on metoprolol and lisinopril but bp not improving after a year. I've taken amlopedine before and it made me miserable but with no prescription coverage I have to take what's free or low cost. Only on 2 days and already feel like crap and my bp is actually higher. I know all these drug cocktails work differently for each person but you would think they would have this figured out by now. I've had high bp all my adult life starting age 20 and I'm in my 60s now.

There are so many blood pressure tablets out there, most with fewer side effects?", I don't understand why anyone still prescribes this. Especially for the first medication, or even the second, especially since it doesn't seem to be that effective.

I agree, didn't lower my blood pressure at all after 2 months

Why is my experience so different? My bp is down to 110/65.

That's a nice BP! Maybe it works well for you as some people it does. However watch out because the amlodipine for me was sneaky. I was on it for about 2 years until I finally put it all together and stopped taking them. Just keep an eye on the symptoms, fluttering heart, sore or swollen feet and ankles, dizziness, light headedness, anxiety, feeling like you're dying, tiredness, blood infections, depression, cold fingers and feet etc.

I stopped taking the amlodepine after just a couple days and my doc put me back on metoprolol. I have an appointment next week to review more options. Overall I'm comfortable with my BP readings but they are always high at the docs office. So many of these drugs have horrible side effects it's been very difficult for me to find what works.

I have higher BP at the docs office too. Usually 20 to 30 points higher than home. I'm on my 3rd BP meds attempt. And this has been going on for Years.

Same here. I've had high bp for 30 years and have been on various meds. Any time I get a new doc they want to change meds. So stupid and frustrating for me. I think stress is my biggest problem but hard to control that. It's helpful to connect with others who have similar problems.

Ya for sure. It's hard to not stress out when anxiety rolls in. I'm all about trying to keep the fibre high and sugar and sodium low. I do find it helps also taking supplements and not so much working out but trying to keep somewhat active to keep the circulation going. Hopefully one of these days the miracle drug will come around.lol

You are very fortunate/lucky that you can take amlodipine with no side effects. I am one who has suffered every side effect listed and some not listed. Currently I am at my wits' end since my doctors do not know what to do. I am soooo exhausted!
