I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!
Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

Seriously Lisiniprol has been around forever, that is because it actually works extremely well. My blood pressure on the average runs around 114/78 now, with Amlodipine it ran AT LEAST 140/90 --- big difference. I would have been stuck on the Amlodopine except my brother was on a different med that worked. I asked what it was and it was Lisiniprol HCTZ - the lowest dose. Within 1 day my BP readings were normal. He told me that both my mother and father took the same medication and always has normal BP readings, even at the doctor. I have not had to watch my sodium as the med takes care of it for me. I've heard some people say it causes a cough or scratchy throat, I guess it depends on the person cause I have absolutely no side effects and I'm not as scared anymore since switching. I had an aneurysm burst in March of 2016 because of my blood pressure, I almost died. I never want that to happen again!!!

Hi there, I'm 27 yr old male, with high bp always around 140/88. Started to take 5mg amlodipine for just 1 day, and I already have been presented with palpitations, unable to sleep and my anxiety is off the roof. Dr. Said to start out with just half a pill but even so I don't like the symptoms that has showed up. Started eating healthy and running, hopefully by doing so I'll see a difference. Also took hydrochlorothiazide for 3 days but I couldn't function with the light-headedness.

Hi Brennan, if you are having those side effects now I would get off the med and try something else. I took amlodipine for 2 years and really wish I never took it. It is a must for you to buy your own bicep blood pressure monitor and take the reading yourself at home for a true reading. I had those same readings at that age and now at 35 my BP is up around 145 /95 if I don't take any meds. I am now on a low dose of coversyl HD plus and it dropped me to 133/85 and the only side effect is I pee 2 or 3 times more per day.
At 27 years old you don't want to lose those good years under the haze and side effects of blood pressure pills and 140/88 isn't alarmingly high and if your reading was 139/89 you wouldn't be considered hypertensive at all. I would suggest a heart health vitamin complex that will probably drop you down a few points to get you below stage 1 hypertension I take 1 and it seems to work. It is from the workout body building supplement store ( sorry I can't put the name of it because of the site rules) It comes as several pills in a pack that I take each day and has grape seed oil, niacin, multi vitamin, phytosterols, CO q10, fish oil. It's 30 $ a month here in Canada and after a couple weeks you may be surprised to see your BP drop a few points.
Good luck!

Hey Nigel. My name is Johnathan. For me I was prescribed with the 5mg of Amlodipine myself as of November 2016. I had a major chest pain in my chest that would not go away. So I took myself to the ER. After they ran tests on me about my heart. They all came back negative. I had to stay overnight for them to run these tests. So I took the Amlodipine for a few month's, but something still felt off as I was still having the chest pain on my left side. I was referred to a cardiologist and he checked on me. Same results of no issues. Then I finally found out it was a physical pain by my chiropractor. So all of a sudden I started having anxiety issues late January 2017. My anxiety was triggered by seeing a big man dying in his sleep. So it made it where I was scared to go to sleep for almost a week. Then in the following week. I get nervous all of sudden and a major loss of appetite. So I go to my doctor and he gave me 2 anxiety medications to add on top of the Amlodipine. They were Escitalopram and Clonazepam. 1st one is daily and the 2nd as needed for a anxiety attack. Well I only been on those drugs for 3 days and it made my anxiety worse. I was at my parents house zoned out. My teeth continued to clinch for no reason. My eyes felt dilated. The nervousness was still there. Felt like I couldn't poop those few days. I took myself off the medication and it's a lot better. It's been 2 days. Still have anxiety issues but they're nowhere near as bad as it was from the medication. I have a real strong feeling the anxiety issues I'm dealing with started with the Amlodipine.

Hi, I have been on Amlodipine for over 10 years but did not always take it as prescribed. In 2014, I experienced similar feelings as you described and ended up in the hospital as a result. Now after researching, side effects of Amlodipine,I realized that it may have been the results of this drug causing this discomfort on the left side of my body (arm pain/burning sensation, gastric problems, anxiety, etc). My cardiologist performed a heart cath-results were no blockage and mild calcium buildup in arteries to my relief. I've decided to stop taking it to see if this discomfort goes away because my current symptoms are knotting feeling in my lower intestine and some times in my upper throat. If I eat carbs, they appear to relieve the discomfort. Also, a laxative helps to clear the problem up as well. ...hope you are feeling better now. Thanks for taking time to share.

I was 56, when, last October, I suddenly felt weak at work, and went to see a Doctor for the first time in decades.
My Blood Pressure was found to be 162/106, and I wasn't allowed to go back home, but put on compulsory bed rest.
I spent 5 days in the ward- and I took no drugs whatsoever- I drank a lot of water, though, and my Blood Pressure came down to a normal value, and they let me go home.
Several days later, I was minding my own business at home, and, just like that, a horrible thirst came upon me!
I drank two litres of "pure water" and it was like as if I had drunk nothing at all! Fearing it was either poison or Diabetes, I put a couple spoonfuls of BAKING POWDER I had been taking since a while back, to "Alkalize my body," and a few cubes of sugar.
It didn't help.
I called for an Ambulance, and was rushed to the Health Centre where I work by my Department Boss.
She sternly told me to take whatever drugs I was told to take, and I meekly agreed.
The Doctor put me on a drip, and I was later prescribed NORVASC, and a Sleeping Pill (BROMATAN,) for about a month, because I said I was fine with only four hours' sleep at night.
By January, I was sleeping only about two or three hours at a stretch.
I developed tingling across my right head, face, and arm, but this went away with Vitamin B Complex.
I could not go two hours without eating, several weeks ago- otherwise my Blood Pressure would rise, I would feel acute thirst.
The Doctor who became my regular advised me not to eat nor drink anything, should I have an "Attack."
I thought it worth a shot- I tried it, and it worked.
I was afraid to walk more than a quarter mile, lest I have an Attack.
On Doctor's Orders, I was able to walk a mile and a half toward work without injury- or so it seemed.
I am suffering terrifying bouts of weakness- and something weird is going on with my digestion.
It just like as if I am eating plastic food.
Besides that I used to eat a lot of Salt, and now I dare use none, it seems like the food I eat has zero calorific value, and I am starving to death, for several minutes after eating, and suddenly again, hours later.- without feeling hunger.
I have been prescribed MultiVitamins today, by the Emergencies Doctor who first treated me my regular Doctor having gone home, without prescribing me anything for my complaint- except to "eat more solid food."
When I complained that my second lunch wasnt digesting, he prescribed Mr MAGNESIUM TRISILICATE.
I. did not realize it was that, until the Pharmacist handed it to me.
I did not think that it addressed the issue I complained about.
The Pharmacist advised me not to take any other drug within two hours after using that.
I went on the Internet, and tried to find out what its interaction with AMLODIPINE might be.
What I found was mixed up with ALUMINIUM HYDROXIDE- but it did not seem encouraging.
I went back to the Doctor, and complained that his prescription interferes with NORVASC.
He glinly replied that that was by no means certain, and thast we should try it for the next three days, and see what happens.

Hi Nigel, thanks for your post. I've been researching the side affects of Amlodipine. I have been on this pill for over 10 years and did not realized that it was causing the strange pains on the left side of my body. After so many years, I'm now believing that it is now causing stomach and intestinal problems. I believe it took so long for me to recognize because I did not always take it and so I did not associate my stomach problems with this drug. I tried to discuss it with my doctor but he did not want me to stop cold turkey but there have been times where this drug has made me feel like I'm having a heart problem especially since the discomfort is right below my left breast. Not until recently did I know that my stomach is on the left side of my body. Your post has helped me because most doctors, unfortunately, will not listen when you complain that new symptoms are the drugs. Thanks again for sharing.

After being on Amlodipine for months...I was tired of feeling constantly tired, waking up constantly at night, feeling like I was living in a haze, I stopped taking the Amlodipine. Within a few days I felt "normal" again. I am now trying some different herbal supplements along with my Valsartan. My bp is about the same as when I was taking the Amlo, but I am sleeping again , and feel SO much better. After much research, I have ordered Carditone, and Seven Flower Extract, they will be arriving today. I will let everyone know what my results are.

I know it's been over a year since this post, but I'll write anyhow in the hope that this helps someone else. High BP runs in my family, and my doctor felt it was poorly controlled (plus I always shot up 20 points whenever I'd visit his office).
He added amlodipine / norvasv to my cocktail 2 years ago. My first problem was angry, red rash all over my chest, neck and forearms...I should've known my body was rejecting it! For this reason I would often break it in half or skip it (10 mg pills). I had already begun to notice occasional burning, numbness and even some muscle loss on my left leg, and assumed that I was in the throes of some undiagnosed illness.
Not seeing the connection, I got tired of mentioning my issues, (besides, my Dr insisted taking Aml was important), so I started taking it regularly. Within a few, short months, my PN became AWFUL. I would cross my legs and 30 secs later, one would fall asleep and feel dead. I had horrible edema in my left ankle (sorry...CANKLE) and thought I might have thrombosis or worse. Every morning, regardless of how I slept) I'd awake with awful burning, numbness and fatigue. My arms would feel tingly and very weak, my legs felt heavy and weird.
Within 24 hours of fully stopping Aml I'm noticing an improvement and may have to live with permanent damage, but at least I feel human again!
It enrages me that Dr's and pharmaceutical companies are so careless and greedy. Here in the US we are never given a "yellow card" to report side effects. I'm 52 and have never seen one.
I pray that anyone having these problems will find our posts and discuss with their Dr asap. Be well.

I am trying a variety of herbs, vitamins, acv mixed with baking soda and water, and it lowers my bp within the hour to a 130ish/185ish. Eating a lot of bananas too. Hope you find something that works for you. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for sharing your problems and symptoms. It confirms some of the symptoms that I was having as well. I stopped cold turkey for almost 5 days and the symptoms went away. I contact my PCP and she changed my prescription to Lisinopril 5 mg. I feel so much better but not sure how the Lisinopril will affect me but at least I'm no longer on the Amlodipine. I'm researching the acupuncture because there are some studies about how it has helped with high blood pressure and cholesterol. I've also decided to get massages when I can to see if this helps. Thanks again for sharing.
