I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!
Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

This site is very good and confirms what my doctor still will not accept. Here's my story. As a physically active 61 yr old, who runs a technical & marketing driven business,......my experience with Amlodipine includes the lethargy, diminished intellectual sharpness, loss of creative drive, and general tireness, requiring more caffeine to compensate. For me, 5mg is a moderately high dose, and I cut it back to 2.5mg for a much better feel. An accidental 10mg dose will definitely move me to the no-go zone, and a feeling of stress in the chest. The issue that brought me to this website is gout. With the 5mg level for about a year, I developed gout in my small finger and the beginnings in the right hand. I cut back to 2.5mg, cut most alcohol and red meat and the gout is 80% gone. Can't prove otherwise. Taking 2.5 in the morning is the best I can tolerate. Early this year I've begun taking more Mg and K and also seeing a difference in feel and BP, and still the doctor in not on board. So, I'm working on the gout and BP through all means otherwise, to stay at 2.5mg or get off this stuff.

Ive been on amlodipine for about 3 years.
I didnt have any side effects that I noticed
until I turned 60 in sept last year.
I then started to get really burning acid like my stomach is on fire.
I swear they have put me on a cheaper version since I stopped paying for my prescription last sept.
I just cant remember the manafacturers brand tho...they were much smaller than the ones im on now.
Im going to go back to my doc as after suffering for 6 months with burning indigestion I need to change the pills.
Do you know of a recommended alternative please

Hi
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have posted separately about my experiences with amlodopine.
I have now been on Ramipril 2.5 for almost two years plus Simvastatin 20.. I am doing much better and my adjusted BP is normal.
Please do go to your doctor as these symptoms sound very unpleasant.
Kind regards
Gérard

I had a similar situation a few years ago when the phamacy substituted Greenstone amlodipine brand with a generic/other brand, but it was a different reaction for me (cant' exactly remember, but it was not pleasant ). They recently said they can no longer get Greenstone brand, so I had to ease into the new brand, and no problems. I take my pill first thing in the morning, then evenually eat breakfast. I know this is not much help, but in my family, some of us have mild reactions to the "fillers" or processes the drug companies use. Of course, my doctor thinks otherwise.

I took Amlodopine from December 2012 to June 2016 and it about killed me. I am 45 6' 1" and weighed 245 to start December 2012 by middle of 2013 I had gained 15 or so pounds and thought nothing of it. Slowly climbing to 280ish my doctor said I needed to hit the gym and eat better. I insisted i was pretty active at work and didnt eat that bad to weigh that much but ok maybe I am wrong. At the end of 2014 I felt like my weight had went up some more but was afraid to check but bending to tie my shoes was a problem. Everything I ate no matter what it was made me feel bloated until I was hungry again 6 to 8 hours later, then eat when I was starving but not over eat and feel bloated again. When I finally weighed I was 300 at end of January. By April 2015 my weight took another jump to 320 or so. I went to dr and told him this is scaring me bc I know I dont eat that bad. He said go to gym and you dont realize how bad you eat until you start writing it all down and see it. I started cutting back and even only eating 2 meals a day. By April of 2016 I weighed 350. I walked into dr office with 2 journals and a folder full of medical records on me, his eyes were big. One journal mapped everything I put in my mouth along with calories of each food. The other journal was life experiences that I was having that was making me miserable to live, breath and sleep, plus my back was killing me. He took me off work bc I said I couldnt take it or perform my work. My life didnt start getting better until June or July of 2016 when my cardiologist took me off Amoldopine bc I was compainig to him about my weight and I thought it might be fluid retention. The first 5 days or so I was off it I went to the bathroom every 2 hours and it felt like I had been holding it all day. RELIEF. I lost 8 lbs in 3 days and no longer feeling bloated when I ate. I also started sleeping 8 hours a night and feeling rested and full of energy. I am happy to say today April 14, 2017 I have lost 85 lbs and still dropping and feel great. Yes it was suvire fluid retention with other side effects with my sleep, my concentration, sex life, energy and mood swings.

I'm actually on my 2nd day now taking amlodapine. My BP never seems to stay down. Already on 40 mg Lisinipril, and 25 mg Hydrochorothiazide. But still not helping. My BPis aways around 190/100. Not good cuz i have inoperable brain aneurysm that could burst if bp too high.
This is my 2nd day/amlod and I very light headed, loopy, tired. Yesterday I passed out for 3 hours..good thing I was home. Hoping my body gets used to this or else I wont be able to function much anymore.

I have been on 10mg of amlodipine since August 2016 (plus ramipril 10mg - the max dose I think, and 7.5 of beta blockers, and 2.5 of a diuretic). Your body gets used to it. My BP usually 110/70, sometimes lower. I also have an aneuyrsm. This stuff works and I don't get any side effects, except feeling slightly more tired than I used to. Your dosage may have to be raised, or try a different drug if you get bad side effects, or your BP doesn't go down. I'd say wait a bit longer, your body adjusts. Rest a lot and watch Netflix !

Hello, I felt compelled to enter this group. Me, I am a 39 year professional in Mental Health, I had some symptoms of high blood pressure. Always healthy, active, etc. My Physician prescribed Amlodipine. Due to my undivided trust in her, I took it without a thought. I became miserable, tired, full of anxiety. I am an extremely positive person by nature, NO ONE knew I was struggling inside. I also gained belly fat, which I never have had........I am not overweight...I started to not be able to focus at my desk, the fatigue was truly unbearable. I felt I was not me any longer. Last week, I said screw this, something is not right. I looked at my life and the common theme, my life changed for the worse taking Amlodipine. I have been on it 7 months. I stopped cold turkey 6 days ago. I studied alternatives for high blood pressure. I immediately started C0Q10, water pills, and grape seed extract. I am back to me today, full of life, the water I retained is gone, I am not full of anxiety, moody. I gardened all weekend, hiked with my dogs, felt free. So free. This drug sucks, and I certainly would rather GOD decide if my blood pressure will kill me. Well, after the 6 days, my blood pressure is totally normal. When on Amlodipine I suffered morning hypertension, NO MORE. I should have known better in my career. & I am back to my delicious red wine whenever I want.

You might want to add 600 mg of Magnesium Citrate divided into 3 doses. Magnesium will reduce or eliminate those leg cramps or Charlie horse spasms. Magnesium is especially effective in reducing the lower reading of your blood pressure. Calcium is the expander of the heart and muscles and magnesium is the relaxer.
Coq10 at 200 mg is suggested. Yet, there are so many reasons for high blood pressure such as adrenal stress, aterial calcification, kidney disease, diabetes, etc......
Hope this helps
