I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!

Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

I was a very active 49year old - non-stop!! Never sat to watch TV always keeping Busy, cooking, baking, hobbies, exercising, active Nana and super mom!! With adult children and being restricted from a 2011 back injury- That still didn't stop me. However with stress, my blood pressure started to fluctuate. It hit a high 200/180 at one point. Dr put me on amlodepine 5mg. I thought it was keeping my BP under the alert radar, BUT for 6 months I've felt like I was slowly dying and didn't know why. Until a few days ago I realized the only change was this horrible drug. I've had horrendous muscle cramping in every part of my body. Lifeless all the time. Pain in every joint. Literally feel like I've been crippling slowly- I finally read the side effects and this has to be the cause. Going to Dr ASAP.

Been on Norvasc for 10 years after having a massive stroke.  Started on 10 mg, then 5 mg, and finished on 2.5 mg.  Now got off of this stuff.

?There are many side effects caused by taking calcium channel blockers and physians generally don't pay much attention to them.

?1)   Constipation they admit but don't tell you why you may get that way.  Laxatives can be overused and can cause cause harm.  Our brain is affect by calcium channel blockers in such a way to cause the inability to have timely bowel movements---no physician ever told me this.but a little looking for answers helped me stumble up on this information.

?2)   Brain Damage.  Also stumbled on this fact now being disscussed by research relative to complaints about CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS.  Our Brain is in control of all body functions and when calcium channel blockers systematically manipulate these functions fail to stay normal.

?3) Dizziness, loss of sex drive, nausea, anxiety, and etc are all inclusive in calcium channel blockers.  If we take this mess--you can expect the consequences.

?Hope to be able to control my blood pressure by diet, exercise, sound sleep, and a healthy attitude able daily life.  Good luck.

Just wanted to share my crappy experience with amlodipine. I'm male, 55,  healthy, 165 lbs, fairly active (4-5 times a week I either walk 3-4 miles or do 40-60 minutes of elliptical), with BP that ranges from 120/80 (normal) to 140/100 (pretty much only at the Dr office and when I'm anxious). About a year ago my Dr put me on amlodipine 5mg. It reduced my BP maybe by 5 pts but after maybe 9 months I began getting episodes of flushing and tachycardia (not super fast, maybe 100 instead of 80). At the time I hadn't put 2 and 2 together but I was also getting frequent headaches (4-5 times a week, often waking up with one) and more stomach problems. Finally a couple of weeks ago I got to the point where I was really anxious all the time, and having a rapid pulse all the time, and my BP was high (130/90 to 140/100). I went to the Dr and was switched to Lisinopril. For about four days after stopping amlodipine I felt shaky and nauseous and sickly and had a lot of trouble sleeping - very much like drug withdrawal I suppose. But now that it's been a week since my last amlodipine, I have had only one little headache, my anxiety is way less, and my pulse is lower (haven't checked my BP yet). Clearly this drug was not a good match for me! P.S. I didn't experience any swelling or significant fatigue, but the other stuff was bad enough. Also P.S. During the year I had mentioned stomach and anxiety issues to the Dr, but instead of considering that it could be related to the amlodipine I was taking, I was prescribed zantac and ativan. The zantac helped somewhat, but I avoided the Ativan as much as possible - that stuff can be addictive.

Forgot to mention another symptom I failed to link to amlodipine... More frequent urination. Since I'm a guy and In my 50s I thought it was just my prostate doing its thing. But since stopping the amlodipine that issue has calmed down a fair amount too.

      Hi there,

i got gross swelling of my legs to the point I thought my skin would split! My skin became dry and flaky on 10mg amlodipine so it was reduced to 5mg then the anxiety kicked in. I've dropped to 2.5 but still get swelling and red face. I was given a diuretic but to me that just complicates things further. Any good ideas?

After reading about the side-effects of Amlodipine  I took my bottle of that stuff and threw it into a trash can. I was put on it only several months ago by my doctor because my blood pressure was fluctuating. One time it was normal, other time 156/80. I started with 2.5mg and at the next test - nothing has changed. So, my Doc doubled the stuff to 5mg and again the fluctuation of my BP after 2 weeks on the stuff has not changed. However, what has changed, I started experiencing the same symptoms as many of the people in this discussion forum. The main ones were - I felt like doing nothing = no energy no motivation; about 4 hours after getting up and feeling rested, I could go right back to bed; also my lower legs (not feet or ankles) started getting puffy, especially when I got myself do something.

I took the liberty to do some research about this med. The main purpose of this med, as many of you know, is to block calcium from being deposited into soft tissues namely arteries and veins. In my further research I found that having calcium depositing into soft tissues is due to how we digest it. It make sense if our arteries and veins are turning into a stone that our BP will rise. However, the question here is '"Is this the cause of our elevated BP?"

When I asked my Doc what is the cause of high BP, his answer was "We don't know."

After what I found about the calcification of soft tissues, I went further and found that there is a test which can pinpoint whether one has this condition. The name of the test is CAC or Calcium Score or Agatston Score.

The test is done by non-invasive CT scan. Results between 0 to 400 are normal, anything higher is no good and risky.

Now, how many of us had this test done? I for one had not. Just think, if all of us, who have these adverse effects from this med, have not have the calcification condition but taking a med which is designed to de-calcify us. Some calcium in our soft tissues is needed and this med is taking the favorable amount away. Would not that make the condition worse and hence cause all of those side effects?

I have also found that the improper digestion of calcium is most likely caused by deficiency of vitamin K2, A and D3. Was any of you tested for that? I was not.

I found and ordered a compound named Artery Strong which contains the right amount of those vitamins from Terry Natural Vitamins, today. after that I found that the stuff is also available at The whole Foods. I'm not 100% sure of it since I have not yet made it to the store.

P.S. Just yesterday I received a message from my Doc to yet double the med to 10mg due to my bad BP test. Consequently, I visited this forum - read it - identify with it - and ditched the med.

FYI: I am not a medical professional nor a pusher for any vitamin company. I'm 65 yo and a retired software engineer who likes to get down to the deepest facts of how things work.

P.S.S. I'm going to ask my Doc for the CAC test and also tests whether or not I may be deficient for those vitamins. In the mean time, as soon as I get the Artery Strong I'll be tanking that. I'll see what will happen. My next BP test is in two weeks. Also, at one time I was religiously taking Magnesium, Calcium (just imagine) and Q10 and my BP was normal. I'm not a good pill taker hence started slipping, even stopped, oh well.

      Hi Stan,

Have you read about the Pauling Therapy? It's formulated to get rid of the plaque, make the arteries or vessels more elastic and then prevent further build up. It's not about the Cholesterol. The formula consists of vitamin C, l- lysine and proline. The lysine eats away the plaque, the proline prevents the return of the plaque and the Vitamin C makes the vessels more elastic. You can buy the ingredients in bulk or buy the formula from the Pauling institute.

Another important factor is magnesium. Without sufficient amounts of it, Calcium will leave the bone and enter the blood and lead to arterial calcification. Dr. Carolyn Dean is an expert on Magnesium and recommends 400-600 mg a day of Magnesium Citrate. Do not used magnesium oxide. And yes, vitamin K2 is critical.

      Hope this helps

      Hi Sam,

Thanks for your comment. You are absolutely right about the formula. A great source for bulk vitamins, enzymes and minerals in a powder form can be found at Bulk Supplements. They can be purchased directly from the company or through Amazon. One thing, l-lysine in powder mixed in water tastes really really bad sad. However, it has no side effects. I'm definitely going to add the other elements to my self-cure.

      Great info, Sam.

      Hi Stan

You are welcome. As a base all natural Multivitamin, Mother Earth Labs has the best. It combines fulvic and humic acids to make our cells more permeable. I'm not sure if it is available in the UK. It's got everything in it which means you don't have to take a dozen other stuff with it.

      Hi Sam,

I just briefly checked the Mother Nature Labs website. Their products look great. Which of them you think is the most suitable for having a healthy blood pressure in check?

      Thanks,

I would say the PH Balancer. It's a much better product than Intra Max and about half the price. I spoke to the Bio Chemist of Mother Earth Labs, Dr. Hoover and the answers he gave me convinced me that he had the best total organic and all natural complete Multivitamin formulation. It is important to take this with distilled or purified water. Do not take this with flouridated or chlorinated water. Both are toxic to everyday health. I'd advise getting a whole house filter to get rid of these toxins.

Just got reading about the product on their site. It sounds like a winner. Do you have your own personal experience with it, i.e. are you taking it?

Fortunately, where I live our water company doesn't add Fluoride into our water supply and just a very little amount of chlorine which I do filter out.

      Thanks for the info.

      Hi Stan

I don't have any personal experience, but the functional medical doctor that my family goes to does.

Here's one story with my 94 old mom. I took here to a functional medicine doctor and he found several.issues that here geriatric doctor didn't. He found that here copper level was way low. Her Cholesterol we knew was sky high. The doctor said that low copper levels can cause the liver to produce excess Cholesterol. The liver needs copper to function normally. If cholesterol is one issue see if the doctor will give you an RBC copper test. After a copper supplement was issued, her cholesterol dropped dramatically. Many of his patients are off of Statins. But there are many other reasons for high cholesterol. If you can find a Functional Medicine Doctor in the UK, it would be great. They treat the root cause and not the symptoms. People don't have high cholesterol because their body isn't making enough Lipitor.

      Stay well,

      Sam

      how about magnesium glycinate?

      Hi Veewat,

Magnesium Citrate is better. Ist in tablet form. Even better is magnesium chloride. It is liquid that you rub on your body and let soak into your skin for 30 minutes before showering. Or you can just leave it on all day. Some people say it leaves a white residue. So, they want it off. But, leave it on for 30 minutes.

As for adrenal stress, ask you doctor to test for it. I suggest going to a functional medicine doctor. I'm not sure if they are in the UK.
