I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!
Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

Hi Nigel
The best advice is to see a Functional Medicine Doctor. They treat the root cause and not the symptoms. In some cases, hip can be caused by electrolyte deficiencies, adrenal fatigue and a bunch of other things. People don't have hip because they are deficient in prescription drug.
Hope this helps.

I have not tried any of the deretic I don't think that this is the problem I've been on these for years nonetheless I firmly believe that it is caused by my blood pressure medicine Carvedilol amlodipine plus I'm on warfarin . Anything will interact with blood thinner

My husband is also 58 yrs old and is in pretty good shape. His blood pressure has been pretty high...170/104.
The doctor prescribed 5mg of Amlodopine and he's also taking 20 mg of propanolol twice a day. He took the Amlodopine for two days only. He has been sleeping for 5 days and counting. He is very sensitive to medication, but I'm really concerned. He says he feels like he's going to die because he just can't wake up. I read a lot of people saying that they are tired or just can't sleep at all, but I haven't read anything where they are sleeping for days. Like I said, he stopped take the medication after 2 days because of this problem. He also says he can't remember anything.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been having with amlodipine. I have been taking it for 2 years, 10mg a day. I haven't had any side effects at all. My blood pressure fell (with the addition of ramipril 10mg and a diuretic) to average 104/65, which seems to have stopped a major vascular problem I was having. Our reactions to drugs vary, if amlodipine is a problem try another - with medical advise.

Marie, well it seems that one of your medications may be causing your low pulse, but which one, or a combination of which ones? The best person to answer this question is your pharmacist at your local pharmacy. They are the very best people to consult about drugs - they know more than GPs where drugs are concerned.
Having said that, how long have you been on the statin, Atorvastatin? I ask because many people I know have developed muscle aches whilst on statins and, if they are proved to be the culprit, they should be stopped and a non-statin prescribed for your raised cholesterol instead. Whereas Amlodipine can be taken without any problem by some, there are very many people for whom they can cause problems - I am one! My husband can take them as long as they are low dose 5mg. I have had many side effects from many different BP medications and it certainly isn't any fun! As soon as they switched him to 10mg (the dose you say you are taking), he had problems and the dose was reduced back down to 5mg.
I hope that helps but do make the pharmacist your first point of call. Good luck!

A study on the internet NIH concluded that Amlodipine / Norvasc does NOT affect pulse rates. Goggle this and read the study..since this site doesn't like embedding links. Again, this study @40 people showed NO changes in pulse..which is a good thing , I guess. ? Check your other Meds ..
Best Wishes and take care..

I've just found this thread. I was on nifedipine successfully for years but because the regular brand that I tolerated best became unavailable and a generic alternative caused terrible side effects with wildly variable blood pressure, I asked to try amlodipine. It was bad for the first week on 10mg, pounding heartbeat, BP sky high, feeling hot and dizzy but I agreed to persevere. Quite suddenly, the side effects diminished and my BP came down to an acceptable level. I thought all was well but, a few days later, I had the day from Hell which started with the side effects waking me up in the night. Pounding heartbeat, raised heartrate, terrible weakness, spells of nausea, dizziness, brain fog; at one point I wondered how it could be that I felt I hadn't the strength to lie in bed. An urgent appointment with the doctor and he took me off the tablets 3 days ago. I'm still getting the side effects in the mornings but they slowly reduce as the day goes on. Hopefully, as the days pass, this will continue to improve. I'm happy to have found this thread because I was seriously wondering whether something else was wrong and my confidence has been shattered. I've been referred for a 24-hour Holter monitor and when that has been done, we'll have to see what the best way forward is to keep my BP under control without this drug.

I also got terrible panic and anxiety attacks with it. After a recent routine check, the GP suggested I try amlodipine again. Flatly refused!
