I'm 26 and just had a marsupilation of bartholin cyst six days ago. I was not at all prepared for how it would look afterwards and have been in a lot of discomfort since!! I've also been somewhat concerned that the area is very bruised and feels hard, but perhaps after only a week this is normal whilst the area is healing. I would have hoped to have had a little more information from the hospital as this was limited and i guess i felt unprepared for afterward the op. Anyways, i'm hoping it heals nicely and that i have no more reoccurrences – fingers crossed. Furthermore i was told by my surgeon that Marsupilation is meant to be the best procedure – whether others agree would be interesting to know…

Secondly i have to say that although I think this website is useful to share information I guess as a new suffer myself it would have been nice to see more positive feedback and success stories because after reading all the comments I was quite horrified at the reoccurrences and left doubting whether I should have left well alone as opposed to having surgical treatment!!

I would be grateful to hear if anyone has any marsupilation success stories...

:D

    Hiya ladies

I had a general anaesthetic yesterday to get an incision and drainage of marsupilization on left bc. It absolutely hurt after I got it done but they had given me alot of drugs to help with the pain. Im 18 and it was my second bartholin cyst which was down there for about eight weeks and I was prescribed three different antibiotics to get rid of it but it didn't work. So having this cyst had obviously caused crisis on my sexual life now I've gotta wait a few more weeks to anything... great lol

But in alot of discomfort now and I have four days till my a level exam so revision isnt going to good either.

However I don't regret the surgery I just hope I can get on with things when it heals and I feel normal again. If you are considering the surgery then do it if the bc is disrupting your life because my doc told me sitz baths will only help the bc heal after surgery not if the cyst doesnt have anything coming from it. I did try sitz baths like everyone has said on these things but nothing worked with mine so if it doesn't for you then go for the op.

    Goodluck ladies xx

Hi I'm 26 and had a marzup done on weds i had my cyst for 18m before i took the plunge to have the op docs wanted to wait till it swelled but nothing happened and i waited till my daughter was a bit older. 4 days post op I feel slightly sore, bruised and swollen but I feel a lot better than expected and even though after reading some stories I was worried to say the least, I was worried! after the op I felt good and was up and about quickly nothing like the pain/soreness after childbirth but the swelling similar to the cyst before but Hopefully it will settle down soon, I'm due back at work Monday and I'm worried about infection how do you tell?? Hopefully ill be back to my normal bubbly self i must say day 3 was the worst apparently nhs anaesthetic has that after effects but hey ho I woke up today feeling 100% better than yesterday lets hope the next few days are the same smile

    Good luck to y'all!

I too have had one for the past couple of years. Thought I was alone out there! I had it drained by my gyno once -worked for a while but now it's the size of a golf ball or a bit bigger! It only really hurt when I first got it as it gave me a fever I went to my first doc and without her telling me she cut an incision which made me scream like crazy from the pain and then stuffed gauze to drain it! worst week ever! I could not walk or sit or do anything and felt uncomfortable for weeks ! And it obviously did not work as I've still got it and even bigger! worst is going to a new appointment and the nurse with the doc looking at it in horror-which has not helped emotionally at all!

I am afraid that there is a foreign lump there but am at an age of hoping to get pregnant soon and wondering is there any way this can affect pregnancy? apart from the emotional rollercoaster that is!

I cannot afford to lose so many months of recovery! I do not know what to do? feel so pressured for time. Has anyone had a pregnancy fulfilled while having a BC?

    Thanks for your time!

Hi I have just came back from the nurse again... I have had 2 more black stitches removed and 2 white ones, not what I expected from dissolvable stitches. Op done 3rd may I am still a little tender but my nurse assures me I will now start to feel better as all the stitches are out. I am still not sure it was worth it as I only had a small lump and a months worth of discomfort hardly seems a fair swap. I will wait and see. I am not sure all have had the same probs with the stitches so hope others get a better deal. Good luck (maybe Carlisle hospital just run out of dissolvable thread)

I am only 19 years old and I had a marsupialization done on an abscessed bartholin cyst about 2&1/2 weeks ago. It is done draining and has healed very well so far. I was put on 2 antibiotics and they worked wonders. I have no infection left and all the swelling from the cyst itself is gone. Only minor puffiness from the procedure remains. My cyst was bigger than a golf ball but smaller than an orange. Mine has been an amazing success so far and I am very happy with it. But I did not get any idea of how long the healing time would be. Only that my stitches would fall out in about 2 more weeks.

I am 19 years old and had my first bartholin cyst. I had it for 2 weeks, it very extremely swollen and extremely painful. I could not sit or walk or lay on any side except my right side. I had a marsupialization surgery done. The doc have me 2 antibiotics (cipro & flagyl) and they worked absolute wonders I also had packing put in but they took it out 2 days after the surgery and said I did not need another one put in. It has now been 2 & 1/2 weeks since my surgery and I have barely any swelling at all I have no discomfort unless I wear really tight pants and no bleeding, just discharge. I have 2 stitches and on Wednesday (2 weeks to the day after my surgery) the doc said I have absolutely no infection left and it is doing wonderfully and that I do not have to go back anymore unless any problems arise. They said my stitches should fall out in about 2 more weeks.

I had my 2nd bartholins abscess last week and had the marsupialization on Friday afternoon. I was put on flucloxacillin which I finish today and am on a weeks bed rest. I appear to be healing greatly and so far have had no problems, apart from the day time tv wink

One question... How long after the op did anyone try to have sex?

Just dealing with 4th infected cyst. Had my first in 1985 when I was 22, then in 1999, 2007 and again just now so this is a recurring problem. All of them have been marsupialised, all very painful but they do get better within a couple of weeks for me after that. This one now came up overnight and I am trying to self treat at the moment with antibiotics and regular batheing with hot water but although the swelling is not getting worse, the discomfort is getting no better so I may have to go back to the doc's to progress treatment. I wish the doctors understood what the pain and discomfort is like as they seem to dismiss it as minor when in fact I've found it to be really debilitating for a few weeks each time. May ask doc about the catheter method though and see if it's less of a pain!

    Hi ladies,

I had never heard of a Bartholin's cyst until I got one during my pregnancy. Mine would grow to the size of a grapefruit but typically regular sitz baths would help them drain on their own. I did have a stubborn one a few years ago that required drainage by a Gyno - which seemed to go well. Then last October 2012, I developed another cyst. Sitz baths were not working and this thing kept growing to the point my entire vaginal area was purple and engorged (very swollen). With the holidays and various other things, I ended up unable to get in front of the Gyno until December 6, 2012. This new Gyno offered up marsupialization to correct the fact that my left bartholin gland was a repeat offender. It sounded all good to me and I agreed.

I had an oily brownish tinted fluid come pouring out of me during this procedure. I was not put on antibiotics when I left. After a week I went in for a checkup - and advised the gyno that I had continual discharge that had a strong sweet chemical smell to it. He told me the discharge was my gland continuing to drain and felt everything was okay. Well, I couldn't stand the smell and had to wear pantyliners constantly. I returned to the gyno's office but saw a different doctor. I had to demand they take a culture, that did in fact come back being positive for a bacterial infection. I was not put on antibiotics, but was instead put on Flagyl for 7 days. When this did not correct the odor or discharge, I was put on a second round of Flagyl for 14 days.

Now, here it is October 4, 2013 - 10 months after my marsupialization and I'm still having constant discharge with a chemical smell to it. I have not gone one day without wearing a pantyliner. The expense of wearing pantyliners all the time is ridiculous and the embarrassment of a constant discharge and vaginal odor is just unbearable.

At one point I thought I need antibiotics, but was treated for a severe case of h.pylori and was on two different antibiotics for 10 days - 3000mg total per day! So at this time, what ever is causing my discharge and odor, it doesn't respond to Flagyl and/or antibiotics.

Has anyone had constant discharge after their marsupialization? My hormones are very screwed up - have been very high - including my progesterone, two estrogens, and my testosterone. Could these imbalances be the culprit of my constant discharge? The clogging of the gland was due to an overproduction of fluids that the gland couldn't keep up with - so now that I've had the marsupialization - there is no way to slow down the fluids - of which now flow freely. Could this be nothing more than hormonal imbalances? For me and maybe for some of you?

    Thoughts??

I am having the same problem.. but my doctor said it's normal but I'm starting to stress over it.. because the smell is uncomfortable not to mention when just out of the blue there's an discharge.. and I'm all about good hygiene.. and makes me feel ashamed because I feel if I can smell it.. so can everyone else. Really don't feel like going back to the doctor to be going through some crazy medication.. never have had to wear panty liners till now.. and they're always soaked. I keep baby wipes though.. but the lump has not returned.. it's like a lose lose situation though😞😔 I'm literally stressed out over it.. and my first period afterwards was insane. Never thought that I'd be stressed to the point I want to cry over my Vagina.

I'm 24 and had my first (and only) Bart's abscess marsupialized nearly four weeks ago.

The whole thing happened within a matter of 4 days - I never even realized I had a cyst. I had never noticed a swelling or lump before this, the whole thing came out of nowhere.

It actually came to light because I thought I was getting the flu - really painful shooting pains throughout my body had been occurring for two days, where it got to the point where I could barely move.

No other flu symptoms where coming about though. At about the same time (on the second day of the body pains) it felt like someone has punched me in the vagina - NO swelling, and I had been doing a lot of lifting at work so figured I had just knocked it and this was a coincidence.

On the third day my body was in agony and I couldn't go to work (yet still no other flu symptoms others than sharp aches and pains everywhere) and my boyfriend took me to a 24hr doctor.

By this stage I had some swelling and my vagina was so painful I could barely walk - nothing I recognized as a cyst though, just the whole left labia was swollen.

I mentioned this to the doctor and he took one look at it, and a very painful prodding, and recognized it as an abscess and sent me straight the hospital emergency ward!

Turned out to be a very large bart's abscess that was spreading infection throughout my entire body, ergo the other unexplainable pains.

Had two spend the next two nights in hospital waiting for surgery to have it marsupialized - by the time I finally went in for the procedure the abscess was the size and shape of a small orange and absolute AGONY.

They gave me a spinal epidural so that I was awake for the whole thing, just paralyzed, and fitted me with a catheter until I regained feeling the next morning. Was administered antibiotics via a drip for the next 12 hours or so (not given any to take orally), which seemed to have been fine.

Bar the stitches (for which I spent about four days on regular pain killers), pain was instantly better the next day with the abscess gone.

Four weeks on I am still experiencing quite heavy green discharge which I suppose is the cyst continuing to drain. I have to continually wear panty liners, which is frustrating,

I can now also feel a very hard lump where the cyst was... something that was never there before.

Sex is also still extremely painful - wondering (hoping) if this will eventually get better?

As a whole the experience was traumatizing to say the least! Super glad I went to a doctor when I did though - still find it quite bizzare that it formed and went mental within a week, but at least it's gone now.

I hope sharing my experience helps somebody else going through the same thing!
