I'm 26 and just had a marsupilation of bartholin cyst six days ago. I was not at all prepared for how it would look afterwards and have been in a lot of discomfort since!! I've also been somewhat concerned that the area is very bruised and feels hard, but perhaps after only a week this is normal whilst the area is healing. I would have hoped to have had a little more information from the hospital as this was limited and i guess i felt unprepared for afterward the op. Anyways, i'm hoping it heals nicely and that i have no more reoccurrences – fingers crossed. Furthermore i was told by my surgeon that Marsupilation is meant to be the best procedure – whether others agree would be interesting to know…

Secondly i have to say that although I think this website is useful to share information I guess as a new suffer myself it would have been nice to see more positive feedback and success stories because after reading all the comments I was quite horrified at the reoccurrences and left doubting whether I should have left well alone as opposed to having surgical treatment!!

I would be grateful to hear if anyone has any marsupilation success stories...

:D

Hi, I had a BC 6 years ago when I was pregnant. It came out of nowhere and within 2 days I couldn't move I was in such pain. I was referred straight to hospital as an emergency case and got it sorted and it has never returned, touch wood.

What I wanted to know and it's a bit of a strange question, is ... Does anyone else who has had this experience any pain prior to intercourse? Obviously, the gland where the cysts form is there to provide lubrication for the vagina, I find that before sex, I get a really uncomfortable pain, mainly from the side where the cyst was and just wanted to know whether anyone else had experienced anything similar? It's difficult to describe exactly how it feels, so hope you understand what I'm getting at. Thanks

    Hi girls!

I've had a lot of problems with these too, and wanted to share a method that gave at least some relief! Especially after surgery. At my hospital the nurses had what they called "cold boys", some might not like this but for me it was the difference between pain and relief so I went with it. The cold boys were condoms that had been filled with water and frozen kind of like water balloons. You got one and put it inside a fresh piece of gauze. Pop it inside your panties and ice down the affected area. Salt baths worked for me also. But the cold boys were what provided the most relief. Hope this provides some relief for others out there!

I have had two Bart cyst and now I'm scheduled for an appointment in the A.M. The first one was 5 years ago and was the most painful of all. I got the ballon cath to drain it for three weeks, the surgery was painful because I hated shots so bad, I refused the aesthetics, pain killer I believe. The second one occurred two months ago today, it's was larger than the first and I had only received the drainage, soo now I'm considering the marsup...I think. sad Any other successful options?

I have had a reoccurring bartholin cyst for over 3 years now, I was due to have a marsupulisation about 1 and half years ago but it had burst at the time so they was unable to perform the procedure. I then got pregnant do having any kind of op under general anesthetic was out of the question! During my pregnancy the cyst returned and was larger and seemed stronger than ever!! It refused to burst and had gotten to the size of a large orange and had prolapsed. I was in complete agony but the doctors were not willing to do anything! Eventually at 26 weeks I had an incision & drain and before I even left the hospital it had started to swell and return. The cyst remained! There was question as to if I would be able to give birth naturally as it was so large (I ended up having to have an emergency c-section anyway due to something else). After the birth the doctors were unsure whether to send me home or keep me in the hospital as the cyst was so big and painful but I begged them so I was permitted to leave.

As I had had the cyst problem for so long I had done extensive research on the internet about treatments. Home remedies and surgical. I read all of the horror stories about the marsupulisation op and the severe pain that goes with it and I was determined to try and find another remedy myself! The incision & drain hadn't worked! I tried sitz baths, Epsom salts, calmaline & tea tree, I eventually tried scilia complex! I took 3 a day and within 2 weeks it had burst!!!! Hoorah!!!!

However it nearly instantly came back... Nowhere near as big or painful do I put up with it!

Until a week before Christmas!!! It started to swell & became painful again? I tried my scilica complex again, but this time it did not work! I went straight to the doctors I'd had enough!!! The doctor took one look and referred me straight to the gynecology department at the hospital... I was seen the next day!! The doctor looked me over and I swear I have never seen such a shocked/worried face! She told me it was the size of a grapefruit and I was put on the emergency list for marsupulisation surgery.

I had my marsupulisation 8am New Year's Day 2014 and as soon as I woke up I was instantly pain free!!! The bleeding was minimal and lasted a couple of days at most. I was able to leave the hospital 4 hours after my op! I was able to walk, sit, climb stairs without any pain or discomfort! I was even loading the washing machine that evening!!!

There are so many scare stories on the internet I was determined not to have this op! But in the end I'm so relieved I have!! The swelling has almost gone now completely and I still have no pain!

I should have had it done along time ago !!

I recommend the surgery!!!!! Don't be put off by the internet xx

Hello, I also had the marsupialization surgery done yesterday after approximately 2 1/2 years of a swollen BC. (About mandarin orange size for the last 6 months). My question is about the aftercare. The gyno instructed me to remove the gauze packing (from inside the cavity) after 24 hrs...which I did. But she also sent me home with extra gauze for if it needed to be re-packed with gauze. The only problem is that she never instructed me as to how I would know if it needed to be re-packed and who I would need to see for that! Good luck getting a hold of her again! So I'm wondering what your experience was with the gauze, if you had any...was it just removed once and then left to heal after that?? I am still bleeding and having discharge, but it's tapered off since yesterday. Thanks.

I underwent Marsupialization 3 days ago and the surgery went well. I was asleep the whole operation. The pain afterwards is minimal and tolerable. Theyve given me two kind o antibiotics and pain reliever but i neve take the pain reliever because i want to be aware of my movements. If im moving too much it will hurt so i try to be careful and mindful of how i walk and lay on the bed.

My problem is i have hemorrhoids so whenever i defacate it bleeds a lot. But if im not straining myself bleeding is minimal. I am scared that my stitches wont heal properly or not at all... i will call my dra again for recommendations.

I will come back for update on my recovery hoping to share good news. Because seriously i havent read a lot of "successful stories" about BC

I must be a lot older than all you ladies, and everyone kept saying how unusual it is for someone of my age to get a Bartholin's abscess - delightful. It all blew up in less than a week, and I had the marsupialisation done a week ago. Very sore afterwards, especially if I move and pull the stitches at all, and my main concern has been to keep it clear of infection as it's in such a difficult place! Still bleeding a bit after a week, and as someone else men tioned, an unpleasant smell comes with the bleeding/discharge. I was put on antibiotics (erythromycin) for ten days from the start of all this, but my doctor saw me the other day and said it seemed to be healing OK and I didn't need any more. I hope she's right. At least now I can walk around albeit rather lopsided, but I am avoiding sitting straight up and putting any pressure on the area till it is properly healed, that means no driving which is tough as I need to drive for work. let's hope in a week or two it will have all calmed down. By the way Flagyl is another name for metronidazole which is indeed an antibiotic.

I am only 14 and I am almost certain I have a bartholins cyst. My left labia minoria is swollen to abit bigger than a grape. I know this is only small but it is proving to be quite uncomfortable when I walk or sit and when I pee it stings. It is red and sensitive around the area. I have only had this for about a day but I am worried. I haven't told my mum or been to the doctors because I am scared about them confirming my fears. I have read about people taking silica and then cyst shinning back to normal, has anyone had the operation and tried silica? I am much younger than everyone else on here and a

terrified by some of these stories!!

I’m 34 and had a BC Marsipulation a month and a half ago... researched how to aid healing to maximise the chances of success - gave up smoking in advance, rested up, bought certain foods and drinks and low and behold I went and healed too well and the enlarged BC reoccurred within 4/5 days (the intension of the operation is for cyst to heal from the inside out, my just healed over at the point of incision despite stitches keeping it open and ‘refilled’).

Just. My. Luck.

Ok, so now I get told there are two choices –

    1)   Ding ding round 2 for Marsipulation but this time involving a larger cut (cue sad face and panic stricken hot flush!!) and packing being left in for days/weeks after surgery (vs for 24 hours afterwards) in order to prevent incision site from healing over again

    Or

    2)    Baloon catheter (sp, please forgive me)......

After a hurried conversation with Surgeon I opted to go for second time lucky Marsipulation with prolonged involvement of packing..on the basic grounds that Marsipulation this is more  of an ‘established’ intervention (the Baloon catheter is newer(?!?!)) but, for want of a better description, I'm shitting it that I'm making the wrong decision... Has anyone experienced these procedures? Apparently painful sexual intercourse (NB: HA sex! Chance would be a fine thing!!!!!!!!) is a potential consequence for the baloon catheter procedure and not a potential with Marsipulation??... please can some help.. my surgery is booked for next week?

Ok on a side note that keeps cropping up in people’s posts.. I too was by no means prepared for afterwards - visually shocking, pain was horrendous... going for that first wee after the general and local anesthetics had presumably worn off (mid-sleep 1 or 2am) is something that will possible haunt me forever. As for women who return to work, normal activities with 3-4 days – the mind boggles?? Are these woman super human?? Or have they had multiple children?? Perhaps that have significantly less nerve endings down there then I do?! …Now I don’t mean this to panic people, but we should be allowed an element of mental prep for this! Just so you know, if it's anything like what I had there will be severe (sorrowful looking) bruising and swelling, and the process of weeing during the first week afterwards will become to reflect the planning and precision typically associated with military operations in order to minimise nearly fainting from the pain. I’ve been told pouring warn water will help with this the second time round (in advance of actually urinating to provide a barrier and during to help dilute flow) but if this is the case why the HELL didn’t anyone let me have that pearl of wisdom the first time round?! Having said ALL that ... if the procedure is effective there's no doubt in my mind it's worth it vs being stuck with a steady state very enlarged BC. Forever.

Oh and while I'm on a rant, I'm doing really well not to punch, or at the very least flick someone in the middle of their forehead, when they compare the pain involved in my situation with child birth. I'm not a mum. This BC has made sure of that (for the last 6 years this has plagued me by going unidentified – during this time, problems, pain and swelling were only apparent upon sexual arousal, never in medical consultation - Medics cant diagnose what they cant see so they simply concluded I was making it up – sad, bad times!!!). So bringing childbirth into things is incredibly insensitive to my living nightmare. It's irrelevant to me, my situ and the trauma it has caused for me and my ‘life’. I only know what I know and trust me when I say the lack of sex before the operation and the lack of cute baby afterwards make the entire thing non-comparable. So please, for us childless ladies separate the two because as far as I'm concerned the situation is horrendous enough without being reminded that it's ruined my chances of a relationship and children (sorry had to add that, incase someone reading this has innocently said similar things to a childless women enduring a BC and needs to know why it's best not to).

Rant over and out - please please help with info re Marsipulation with packing being left in and/vs Baloon Catheter.

    Yours hopefully,

    Peace xx

Please don't let yourself get in a state over comparisons with childbirth or otherwise - it's not really comparable but it's in the same area and it can be very painful, as you have found out.

I think it depends how big your cyst is - I read somewhere that some women can go back to work with 3-5 days and I too think that's rubbish, confirmed by the nurses at the hospital where i had my op (marsupialisation - so called after kangaroos and other animals who have pouches, this is sewn into a kind of pouch).    Some cysts are apparently quite small but mine was not, and i have been told now (wish they had said so earlier) that it will be a good six weeks before it heals - I am now at four weeks.

The main thing is to be so very very careful to keep it absolutely clean, not let clothes press on the area or anything like that because one tiny bug and you are re-infected.   I'm on a regime of showering in the mornings, rinsing with clean water after each visit to the loo, and  after the first week, soaking in salt water each evening.    I never dry with towels etc. but just pat gently with toilet paper and then dry with a hairdryer so as not to touch and possibly infect anything.  Obviously keep the hairdryer not too hot and not too close!   I        am sorry to say that penetrative sex would only damage the wound and possibly reinfect as well so  you'll have  to make do with other means for the time being, you really don't want to keep on making it worse.   I hope it goes well and that it won't be too bad this time around.

Please don’t let my description be a deterrent to Marsipulation. Don’t overly panic, the worst was over quickly enough but I was told there would be no pain at all and no one thought to point out the seemingly obvious fact that there would be bruising and swelling. In the morning after my surgery the doctor looked and said “it is how I’d expect it to be after surgery”. That’s all good and well but why wasn’t I told so.

I too was, and am, very nervous – but I suspect it’s naturally something to be anxious about! It’s just shit when people say “women have babies and surgery down there all the time and it’s no big deal” comparison vs our situation and what’s involved.  Regardless, I experienced the pain as intense but relatively short lived (NB: I never had extensive pain with BC to begin with). I’ve chatted to my nurse and she just said I have to speak up as soon as I feel pain because there are lots of pain relief they can provide to help (while giving me a wink and referring to opiates to make me laugh).

How was the catheter like? Do you regret it or would you recommend it?

the catheter was so small i didnt really feel a thing just the relief of it being gone as when the incision was made the whole thing just drained.terrible mess but a real relief at the time.me too never relly felt pain with BC it was mostly psychological as it was never infected just had the lump that feels real awkward.first time round it was really big now it is quite big again and was told the operation would not be easy cause it's pretty deep so here i am getting ready for the clinic and trembling all over.cannot believe this is happening.

thanks for your reply and will keep you posted.the doctor said i will be back home in an hour-i hope i can walk cause i also cannot get any time off work which is another worry!

I did it!all went well but most importantly it doesnt hurt.i am on painkillers for a couple of days but i think he gave me them cause i kept asking him if it will be painful afterwards!there is no bruising and stinging just a little pulling lets say.

I am anxiety-stricken on my own so dont worry you helped me prepare for any outcome but really feel bad you went through so much pain!this ranting really helps and thank you for your support! ihope things do not change but so far i can say it was pretty descent as far as it can be right!its not fun being poked at down there!it may have to do with the doctor too i guess and the incision maybe yours was much bigger i dont know but will keep you posted need to take out the filling today hope that doesnt make a difference (was it worse then as it is totally open?)let's all keep strong ladies

I'm sooo releived you're ok (I've practically developed OCD with checking back on here hehe!). Glad you're not experiencing what I did (and what I will be enduring again this time next week). Come on admit... you're a super human aren't you?! ;oP

Did you have the marsipulation? The packing was more like added discomfort becuae of it's awkwardness to be fair

so sorry for the delay but i  had no accesssadyes i did have the marsipulation as well as a polyps removal ,i had the packing removed and am happy to say i am feeling ok.a little discomfort and like a tugging kind of pain but am off the painkillers and it is ok.now gotta go see my doc and take it from there.i've still got some discharge but nothing crazy.and no by far i am no super human but we surely all are super women and can get past this!!!it just really helps when you can relate to sone and not feel alone.when i first had it years ago i thought i was such a freak and it was only me.but as a nurse said its the mysterious wonder of being a woman!(i guess right?)all the same its painful and real emotional but maybe this is preparing us to be alot more appreciative of what's to come.whether that be greater sex or in my case a baby!!!

when are you scheduled to have it done?how could it have refilled so soon?and my doc said that it can only sting when peeing if there is a urinary tract  infection cause pee should be neutral and not sting!so you need to go on antibiotics straight away!ask your doc!you know what i am sure it will go better this time round.confusedstay strong and dont forget you've got sone to vent to this time round(hehe)!!! lmk
