I'm 49, could I have PMR?

Posted , 15 users are following.

I have had severe pain and stiffness in my shoulders and neck for about a month. my hips have been hurting for about 1 week. I gave fibromyalgia, but this seems different. I've feel like I am coming down with the flu. it takes me about 3 hours in the morning before I can get up and dressed. All the stuff that I have been reading says PMR affects people over 50, usually over 70. I have am appt. with my PCP on Tuesday and don't know what to expect. Any advice?

Yes, PMR normally strike woman over 50, I was 78 year old man when it hit me. There have woman in their 30 who have unlucky enough to contact PMR. If you have stiffness in your muscles and when you work against the stiffness it very painful. Then you prescribed Prednisone and your pain is relieved, welcome to the PMR club. May your journey be a smooth. Think positive, stay active and try to smile. 😉

I believe that staying positive is a very big part of work through this journey!🙂

No-one told PMR it can't appear before your 50th birthday! It is less common in under 50s - which is by no means the same as saying it doesn't happen.

I always read about any new medications and possible side effects on the internet, before putting them into my body ...ITS NOT TOO DIFFICULT TO GOOGLE

      Hi r.d.s26296

My doctor always tells me not to put my trust in Dr. Google. Hence, i took her advice.....😊😕

there is still a problem with this site and the uppercase typing was not deliberately printed by myself ...it was printed automatically

as someone on another thread pointed out, there is no spell check and no editing available

i had no intention to offend anyone

until these problems are corrected i have decided to withdraw from the forum

      confrontations are not my style

      Hi r.d.s26296,

We are aware of issues with the editor and capitalisation and spacing issues affecting phones and other devices which we have reported to the provider. I don't think the reply above was supposed to be confrontational so I hope you can keep posting. If you do have this issue again use the "Report" link on the post affected and select the "Other" option. You can then enter text to let us know the post may need editing.

      Regards,

      Alan

It's such a shame if you withdraw for that reason as there is definitely a problem with the uppercase and unless I remember to put it on and off......a pest......it just stays on. I thought it was my ipad or me but it's neither. I think we'll need to bear with the fact that this site is like roadworks which keep moving and drive us daft trying to find a way round. I think patience for us all is the name of the game at present and not taking offence when none has been intended.

    Hi Snoopboxer

To answer your original question your PCP will no doubt order an ESR: Erythrocite Sedimentation Rate blood test also a CRP : C-Reactive Protein blood test. If these are raised then inflammation is usually diagnosed, but in some cases these two blood tests are not always raised or maybe one is and other is not to diagnose PMR....just wait for your results and keep us posted.....hope all goes well for you....good thoughts your way....👍

      Hi Snoopboxer

I didn't go through a physical exam, my doctor asked me about my symptoms only which i described and she then ordered the blood tests.....👍

Normally you have a lot of blood tests, they may check you lifting your arms up, my rheumie used to check my legs just above the knee but I am not certain that was needed!! I did leave him in the end as he became a bit too touchy feely. They may just do blood tests and ask some questions. Perhaps take blood pressure.

I can't remember but it wouldn't have been more than being asked to lift my arms, if that. I do remember she suddenly asked me to press my hands against hers (we were both standing) and she caught me unawares and off balance so she easily pushed me away, which she then attributed to weakness. At that point I wasn't weak, but I didn't bother to protest too much! PMR itself doesn't cause weakness. Inactivity because of pain can lead to loss of muscular strength and one of the side effects of pred is increased susceptibility to injury and decreased muscular strength.

ewwwe...Ptolemy! touchy feely?? so glad you left!👍

yes, my doc had me raise my arms above my head and such (which I was unable to do)....that seemed to be one of the important factors for her diagnosis!

I told my GP and she said she had never come across it before! She obviously does not read the popular Press!
