I'm a 22 year old male and was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate.

I have no idea if it's cancerous or not, but i haven't had an appetite since friday November 15. Thursday was the last official time i felt super hungry. I'm losing weight. i dropped from 154 to 143 and just today bought a scale. I'm at 140 now. I'm usually very very hungry and eat a lot. i was also stressing a lot(literally everyday up until now) and the death of my grandma on the 19th. of October was the cause for it. I have anxiety which doesn't help. A range of symptoms i was experiencing was: trouble urinating(i haven't peed normal in awhile i don't think, but when i say trouble i refer to me taking a few seconds to be able to urinate), very weak stream, dribbling, not feeling like i was emptying my bladder, i could barely tell when i had to pee, i even before all this would constantly wake up in the night to pee.(probably about 2 or 3 times every night) It sucks because i have no insurance and am going to a meeting with an agent for it on the 26th. They prescribed me flomax which instantly helped a few minutes after taking it. i got the usual side effects from it the first time around and i felt horrible afterwards. it didn't help that i had to work that morning. I wasn't as strong as i was, my legs were getting tired really fast, and i felt slight fatigue, and also my nose was super freaking stuffy. I was very tired at the end of my shift, but didn't fall asleep when i got home. My bladder was going good til the end of the night rolled around. i started to have a bad stream again and some of the problems i mentioned earlier. I took my second dose of it and it didn't seem to help instantly like last time. it wasn't till i officially woke up and started drinking water that it went back to a good state. I also to my surprise did not experience any side effects this second time around. I should mention that before i found out i had an enlarged prostate i was getting back pain. I wanna say i only experienced this 3 times. Twice while at work and once when i was just sitting in my chair. The possible last two things i should mention is that sometimes i feel like I'm burning up and for the past few times i have taken the flomax i have been waking up with night sweats. I'm not drenched in sweat either, but I'm definitely sweating. (i was seeing a bunch of things where the sweating side effect doesn't happen i believe or is uncommon and i saw one medical thing where it said you could sweat from flomax) the burning up thing is a iffy thing though. it can be hot in my room sometimes. i have been trying to keep it cool lately. I noticed that on certain days when i was at work i had so much trouble focusing and it was hard for me to work properly. i also had been on 2 days off and was a little rusty when i came back which for me i feel is a normal thing. The fact that i couldn't focus and was rusty just sucked. I wanna say my memory was a little iffy too, but i just think about so much stuff that that possibly could have been why i was forgetting little things a lot. I don't think I'm depressed, but since I'm very concerned for my well being i haven't been the same lately. i guess I'm going to end it here. if i missed any symptoms or anything i forgot to mention then I'll try and male sure to get them down. Every and any advice is greatly appreciated! I just wanna get better.

Can't really comment on most of your symptoms. I know there are lots of people that have trouble with flomax side effects. I've been on flomax for several years and don't have trouble with it. I can tell you that there is no correlation between an enlarged prostate and prostate cancer. They are separate issues.

Who gave you the diagnoses as they have to do a digital rectal exam or a pelvick altrasound. The urinologest will tell you as there is no way at 22 you got BPH.You probBle have a UTI and a cystoscopy will tell what you have.

I went to the hospital and a doctor there just figured that would be a good thing to do. She did the rectal exam with the glove and boy oh boy was that uncomfortable. She felt it was enlarged.

I don't know what kind of answers you are hoping to get from the mainly lay people that frequent this blog but if I were you, I would go see a urinary oncologist at my earliest convenience, get a Color Doppler MRI (a biopsy if necessary) and get moving on some appropriate treatment. Typically, your symptoms start at age 50 not 22. The weight loss is a concern. Good luck.

Thank you and believe me if i could I'd get this stuff rolling faster than barry allen! unfortunately i have to wait to get insurance.

man you are too young for all this! besides seeing a urologist and getting a complete prostate work up you need to see a primary care doc and get a COMPLETE blood work up. if something non BPH is wrong the first place is to look in the blood

Thanks for the heads up! I'll remember to keep that in mind. Thank you!

    Joe,

As others have said BPH rarely starts that early, most of the time the men start to develop it after age 40. Unexplained weight loss and night sweats are not good signs (and I speak from experience). People often adjust to Flomax side effects (I think that was a little lightheaded for a few days and then I was fine).

If I had to guess I would probably guess that it was a UTI. If you have been sexually active recently you should mention that to your doctor as well so he can consider some STDs as some of those upon initial infection can produce flu like symptoms.

I will echo what others have said regarding seeing your primary doc and get a full physical with blood tests to at least start to narrow in on what is ailing you. Don't try to diagnose yourself or find answers here.

    Best of luck,

    Rob

I hate the fact that we can't edit here. What I meant when I said 'If I had to guess I would probably guess that it was a UTI' refers only to your urinary symptoms and not the weight loss/night sweats.

Thank you for your time and for giving advice! I have not been sexually active so luckily we can rule out the std.

    Joe,

At age 22 it's extremely unlikely that your issues are from an enlarged prostate unless you have confirmation from a DRE (digital rectal exam) or some of the other options mentioned here. I understand that you don't have insurance, so a color MRI is going to cost you thousands of dollars out of pocket. Like others here have mentioned this does sound like an infection. A simple urine analysis should detect if this is the case. If you do have an infection a round of antibiotics should clear it up fast. A lot of your "symptoms" appear to be anxiety related, so you have to figure out a way to calm down, get the urine analysis, go to your doctor and get a simple DRE, then move on to a urologist from there if necessary. Do the simple, easy, cheap things first.

    Keep us informed....

Thank you tom! I definitely had that rectal exam done and the doctor told me it was enlarged. I wanna say it's safe to say that she didn't feel bumps.
