I am having a spinal block and sedation and am very anxious about the whole procedure. How can I get through the next 2 weeks without constant anxiety and apprehension?

Hi Nuala, I had a TKR on 14/03/2016 and had a spinal block with sedation. I was very nervous, as I did not want to hear or be aware of anything but my Anaesthetist reassured me I would be totally unaware of what was going on. He would make sure the sedation was deep enough for this. Ask him/her to give you a deep sedation. When i came round I didn't have the real drousy heavy feeling i have had with a general or the sore throat as you have no tube down your throat with spinal. It helps with the pain relief after as your leg will be numb longer afterwards, a general you need pain relief. I had surgery at 8:30 am and was out bed walked a few steps 28 hous later. Doing really well. Goos luck and let us know how you get on. sue

Thank you for your advice Sue. I will ask for deep sedation believe me. Hope you are doing okay and getting there slowly but surely?? X

Yes, I'm getting better daily, it's not sore just uncomfortable especially at night, I find it very difficult to get back to sleep when I wake which is 3-4 times every night. Oh for a full nights sleep. Do all the exercises and don't overdo it as that's when it is hard to get on top of pain, also get peas or ice packs ready...I did not realise just how good they were to help with pain, I still use especially at night. Good luck x

I had my TKR a week ago with spinal block and sedation. Piece of cake. Was not conscious at all during the surgery, they woke me up in recovery. Much easier than general anesthetic.

Yes Susan, I totally agree, I was apprehensive about it but would highly recommend.
