I'm scheduled for a PAE. What is the procedure and post op recovery like?

I've decided to go for the PAE for my BPH. I guess I can consider myself fortunate that my symptoms are not as severe as others on this forum.  My biggest issue is that I now wake up at least 2x a night to pee and the interruption in sleep is definitely affecting me.  My AUA score was 13 which puts me in the moderate BPH category.

I am scheduled with Dr Bagla in April.  What can I expect for the procedure and the postop recovery?  He is saying I can actually work the next day although I will need to make more frequent trips to the bathroom the first few days after surgery.

Any insight would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

    Hi Charlton,

I'm scheduled to have PAE w/Dr B this coming Monday. About a week before my date, Maria from Dr B's office, one of the nurses, called me and went over with me in detail about what to expect going into the procedure, during the procedure and after. Went over all the meds. Answered all of my numerous questions. And then sent me an email recapping our whole conversation. And replied to two emails I sent her with further questions.

From my following the posts on this forum for a long time, I decided not to push things after the procedure: my wife and I will stay in Woodbridge for 3 or 4 days before driving home. Maybe a bit overkill, but I'd rather err on the side of excessive caution rather than too little caution. We'll be staying at the Residence Inn which has apartment like suites and was all things considered not way too expensive.

Are you local to Woodbridge or are you coming from a distance? When in April are you scheduled?

I am local. Dr B said I should be ok to work (I'm a dentist). Just that is have to be prepared for frequent visits to the bathroom.

      Hi Charlton,

Please see the my posts in https://patient.info/forums/discuss/pae-with-dr-bagla-on-03-27-17-582060 for detailed reports of my procedure and first several days after. If you have trouble finding them, let me know and I will PM them to you.

In recollection, I wouldn't have been able to work the first few days after the procedure. Very weak and not sleeping well. I know Dr B said you could work the next day. How old are you, that might make a difference. I'm 69, soon to be 70.

Best of luck to you. You are in great hands with Dr B and his staff. I drove from upstate NY, and it was well worth the extra effort.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Rich

You will walk out after procedure feeling no pain or discomfort, but the next day when Prostate swells up urinating will sting and hurt. that lasts for about a week. If you take steroids it helps a lot but those have side effects for some people and you shouldn't take them for more than about 3 days, pain killers do nothing. I wouldn't plan on doing anything complicated for about a week. Imagine your drilling or whatever and you get a sudden very strong urge to rush to the bathroom? I wasn't feeling weak, obviously sleeping was not good if I had to get up and try and pee every hour. I was 60 when I had it done.
