I'm trying to taper off today and I just need some help

I keep trying to start my own thread and it was suggested that I do one of my own because of my comments on another one and I totally agree and if anyone can help me I'm trying to taper off and I just need help. Have got two days to do it in and I'm afraid of what's going to happen. My wife is tired of going through this and I've done it multiple times. She's sticking with me and I couldn't love her anymore but I don't want to put her through this anymore

Why do you only have 2 days to do it...just curious....did she only give you 2 days?  I don't know if it is possible to "taper" in 2 days...the concept is reducing your intake "slowly"...till you get to the point where you can handle the withdrawals from alcohol.

    I feel your pain...and wouldn't want to be in your shoes...it s*cks

I guess it doesn't have to be in two days. I just have the weekend off and then I have to go back to work. So you're right I guess I just need to taper off slowly but it just seems so difficult

It is really difficult....to taper because as I said I did it one time...but the other times...I just kept drinking more than I should have been with the tapering.

As far as work....do you have any time you can take off?

My suggestion would be to take that time if you can...and totally abstain from alcohol...get thru the withdrawals at home...and that way you will have time to rest.

Hi 171207, it depends on how much you are drinking ie is everday if so it can b very dangerous just stopping suddenly ie fits etc, I am a recovering alcoholic and been sober just over a year, I had to have detox in hospital with Librium, I hope this is helpful x

I detoxed on Librium four five times in the past 2 years and my wife doesn't want me to go back to my doctor and my doctor doesn't want to prescribe me anymore so I'm just afraid and I don't want to do

I probably drink about a fifth of vodka every single day and my wife doesn't know that I drink and she doesn't know that I drink at least half a pint to a pint and work every day as well. And she's trying to back me up

The great thing about The Sinclair Method is that you don't have to quit in order to use it. You actually have to drink for it to work. It does however make you want to drink less and less, so you decrease gradually over a period of months.

You mentioned needing to quit in two days, is that carved in stone?

l71207, how much are you drinking per day?

Don't worry, here at Patient pretty much everybody can find a way to get the beast under control. You will too!

At first it was just half a pint before work and then maybe half a fifth after work but now I've almost moved up to a pint of vodka at work plus extra at night.

Sounds like you drink all day, maybe topping up a bit from time to time to smooth things out, then do most of your drinking after work?

Sorry. I'm a little confused as I replied to you on another post.

I do get the "got 2 days to drink" before reality kicks in and it's time to get back to work and to be "normal" again. That was the story of my life. Eventually I couldn't do it anymore. I had to get help and I hope you do too X

Thank you. My wife is so tired with this and so much and now all I can hope is that I can just taper off and get through it

I must admit that I do drink all day. When I go into work it's at 3 o'clock in the morning and I started drinking from that point

Do you have some choice about how you accomplish this? You mentioned that your wife doesn't know that you drink, or did I read that wrong?

Don't worry, you'll get this handled. Your style is called a maintenance drinker (as opposed to a daily drinker or a binge drinker). That style works fine with The Sinclair Method (TSM).

Another way about it would be to do a supervised detox, then use something like Campral to kill the craving.

With TSM you reduce slowly over a number of months, until the craving is erased and you have free choice about whether you want to drink or not (like most people).

Of course with the detox, you get abstinent up front, then use the Campral to maintain that.

There are other meds to help you quit/stay quit, but I believe that covers the top two.

Do you think my doctor will prescribe me something like that or is it something that I have to go to a specialist to find out about? My wife knows that I drink but she doesn't know how much I drink so I just want to quit and be done with it

Would she be freaked out if you went to inpatient detox?

Is that where you have to take time off from work and stay there?

Right. As I understand it, how long depends on how much you were drinking. Had a friend that did it and was in for 5 days, needed time after that to get his head dialed back in. I think you can start the Campral during the detox so it's closer to kicking in by the time you get out.

There's also home detox, but you'd have to come clean with your wife. I don't know where the cutoff point is between home and inpatient. I'd say go talk to your doc and tell him what you want to use. If you get the "just stop drinking" speech or some such nonsense, you'll need to look for another doc. GP's aren't always equipped to handle this and can tend to blow it off.

Like I said, if can find a TSM doc in your area from CThree's "Find a Physician" list, they'd likely know about Campral too.
