I need success stories please!

I was just diagnosed with blepharitis in July and feel as if my life is over. I'm so depressed that it's incurable. What makes it worse is that the opthalmologist acted as if it was no big deal - describing it as dandruff of the eyelids with a simple remedy - baby shampoo.

Here I sit, a month later with the same symptoms. Haven't worn contacts. Haven't worn makeup. And for a 50 year old woman I would love to wear both again.

I did some research on my own and all I found was misery. Chronic cases in which no one ever improved. Symptoms lasting years. I feel as if life as I know it is over. It's affecting my family life as well. My husband doesn't get it. He thinks it's just an eye irritation and I should get on with it.

If I didn't have kids to raise....

Please no more horror stories. I've seen them.

I need to hear of people who live with blepharitis who have occasional flare ups but not constant symptoms.

Please!

Hi!  I was also diagnosed with having "dandruff" on the eyelids and my doctor prescribed an ointment to put on at nights, warm compress, washing with baby shampoo, etc. Well, none of it worked. I started researcing on the web and found a recommendation to use water, baking soda, and tea tree oil. I've been using it for less than a month and I'm really happy because it is working!  I no longer have to constantly dab my eyes with a tissue all day long to get rid of the white stuff (and looking like a moron with gooky stuff on my eyelids!).

Since I also have dry eyes (after cataract/glaucoma surgery), I also started to dab on 100% organic castor oil right before going to sleep - and my eyes stay moist all night. Best of all, I don't have the blurriness in the mornings like I did with the ointment (which I had to wash and wash and wash out of my eyes!).

If you try the cleanser I described, start by adding water to a small jar (4 oz / 113.3981g), a teaspoon of baking soda, and 2 drops max of pure tea tree oil (Tea tree oil is very strong, so go easy - if you feel it's too strong, wash your eyes and then dilute the mixture.  Dunk a Q-tip in the bottle and then gently massage your eyelids.  I use both ends of the Q-tip, one end for each eye.

Let me know if you try it and how it works for you. I am very happy to have found this home remedy that is actually working!

      Hi Conniegal,

welcome to the forum....I actually has a retinal tear in 2014 and a year later following another incident developed blepharitis and dry eye. I had laser eye surgery back in 2010 and to date I wonder did the laser make my eyes very vulnerable and is this what eventually led to the tear and the bleph developing .......hence I get where you are coming from re the blepho surgery....I suppose we cant turn back the clock and we can only deal with the present , its hard though......

Thank you!  You have me thinking back to last year, a few weeks after my first glaucoma/cataract surgery (where surgeon placed an "Xpress Shunt" for the glaucoma). She said she had to use laser as an adjustment. I'm now wondering whether it was that procedure that eventually led to the retina tear. I would think that with all the dilations of the eyes, a doctor would be able to see the tear, right? My regular ophthalmologist has never said anything about it.

Also, before surgery my eyes were a bit dry, but nothing serious. Now I have to use drops several times a day. As I wrote in another post, I have switched from ointments to dabbing my eyelashes with 100% castor oil, and that truly has helped tremendously in allowing me to sleep - and not wake up with "glued" eyes or blurry vision.

This is all so frustrating, but I'm trying not to get overly anxious about it because that would make it worse for my attitude.

I am extremely appreciative of all the responses on this forum - the site is also very educational. We don't have anything similar here in the US - at least nothing I've been able to find.  Thank you!

    Hi,

I've been fighting bleph over X2 years now. I've tried every cream, eyedrops that cost 800$ for X3 months and

Doxycilin for X3 months. The dox made very sick and it didn't work. I've had three bad flare ups in two years. I

also have a really bad case of dry eyes. I've done the warm and cold cloth which was a totally waste of my

time,it would just come back. All my eye lashes were falling out at record numbers. Part of that was being stupid

and buying eyelash extentions..they not only pull out your lashes they cause infections. However I got this issue

from taking Effexor for depression.I'm seeing my doctor and getting of that nasty drug. I just bought Manuka Honey #16...people are raving about this stuff for bleph. You need to put on twice a day leave on overnight.I've

used it four times now and my eyes are finally white after a year. However it cost lots and takes X6 months to

cure it..but then you shouldnt get it back again depending on meds you take. The honey burns' a little bit cause

its strong and its working.Try and get #20. Its also good for many other health issues. I also buy lumigan for

eyelash growth X2 a day its covered by my bc medical, lattis is not covered. It has caused my lashes to grow long but not full yet and thats because I'm having a bleph flare up. Also your lashes shed once a month and take

three months to grow back...I've done my homework on this issue. And people wonder why I get tired. All this

work just with eyes everyday gets to be a real drag. Us women have enough issues with are beauty stiff

putting on makeup to look good do our hair. nails, have babys, keep working, what our weight and then we lose

all our eyelashes and deal with this crap. Lashes & eyes  are a girls main feature in my book.

There are several potential remedies shared on this discussion that may work for you. For me, it was the Wet Ones wipes. I wear eye makeup every day unless I am having the odd flare-up. For others, who may be allergic to the Wet Ones ingredients, Manuka honey did the trick, and still others claim apple cider vinegar is their cure. Keep trying different remedies to find the one that works for your eyes. Good luck!

    Hi Gavinium,

I have a success story for you.I contracted Blepharitis and a very bad case of dry eye's from the medication effexor I'd been taking for X 16 years. I just found the cause a month ago so now Doctor is taking me off it after I had to prove it was listed under the side effects. All eye drops including gel drops never helped the burning or bloodshot eye's or the swelling of my eye lids. I could never wear makeup either and I was in major discomfort.

I used different antibiotic creams and drops plus hot compresses X3 a day to no avail. I washed my eyes with baby shampoo with Qtips even to not spread it. The work was exhausting. I just finished taking a long time does of Doxycilian which made me quite sick and that did nothing at all. I've suffered so much in the last X2 years it's ridiculous. I've missed many functions. I was ready to give up on trying anything else when I read about WANUKA HONEY. I swear to you when used right man does it ever work. In one week of useing my eyes are white in the first time in X2 years. I use lots of it and oh yes does it burn for a few minutes, but its a burn I gladly will take because its killing the bad stuff. Put it on your top and bottom lash line then gently rub so it goes in your eyes. Clean your eyes first sorry gently. Leave on all night long. In the morning put on for the whole day if your just hanging around the house. If your going out leave on X15 minutes wash off and apply makeup if you like. That's all their is to it. I was to most severe case the eye surgeon said he's ever seen and said I would never recover. And I'm not only wearing makeup again I'm wearing my contact lenses for the first time in years. You need to use the honey for X 6 months but it's suppose to cure it after that length of time. Even if your eyes feel great don't stop treatment and use lots of it. Read up on the honey it cures lots of things and can't hurt your skin or eyes. Oh I bought (Wanuka # 16) I wanted # 20 but can't get it in BC. Try and get # 20 if you can. The higher the number the more effective it is. Order it if need be. It is expensive but it will work if you keep at it. If your eyelashes are falling out like mine do buy (Lumigan) It works really well and is much cheaper than Lattis. It's free in BC. Anymore questions please feel free to send me a reply.

I think I do have a success story. I was diagnosed with mild blepharitis 3 year ago. I got the same "no cure, try these creams/antibiotics" run around. I also suffered from bouts of crushing self-doubt in my looks. Especially since I WAS a terribly vain person.

Since then I've developed a routine that has shown improvement over the past 3 years. I'm not sure which part of my routine is most effective since I started all the elements of it at the same time.

    1. Each morning I wash my eyes, gently, with a lather from zinc oxide bar soap. I use Dr. Cynthia Bailey's (for real not plugging her product, just what I use). Then gently debride the lash area with water and anti-microbial q-tips. Apply Eucerin lotion to face.

    2. Each evening, wash my face/eyes with zinc soap again while in shower. After getting out, I debride with q-tip again, but this time dipped in baby shampoo/water mix. I wipe that off with Cliradex tea tree oil wipes. They burn but you get used to it. Then apply lotion on face again.

It's taken time, but I've seen dramatic improvement in my eye (only have it in my right eye but do procedure on both). The typical things still cause flare ups like heavy drinking, no sleep, or combo thereof.

On a different note, I dated multiple beautiful women in the past 3 years. From when my eye was its worst to now. So I know how defeating this disease can be. But if someone really likes you, and you don't make a big deal, you can manage. Even when I pointed it out (mainly due to questions about my routine), the girls either didn't notice and/or didn't care. Just keep trying and you will find something that works. Main thing is to find support and don't isolate yourself with your own thoughts.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Dear Gavinium,

I had a success story and killed the Blepharitis using Wet Ones, antibacterial hand wipes, on my lashes. I had a terrible itching and managed to put it into the other eye so was going crazy.

I tried baby shampoo and antibiotics 3 times.

A friend killed her Blepharitis using an Avon antibacterial facial scrub. When I went to look to buy that product they no longer had the ingredient, Benzethonium Chloride, in it. They had reformulated it.

I looked online to find which other products had Benzethonium Chloride in them. That is how I ended up using the Wet Ones.

I killed it in just over 3 months. My itching was so bad I used them 4 times a day for about a week then felt better so went down to 3 times a day then for the last couple of months I used them only 2 times a day. That was not hard to do.

I wore makeup the whole time I was killing it. I bought new makeup. I think I got this from using old mascara. I bought throw away wands and throw away applicators (look like Q-tips but one end was sharp and one flat).

I never double dipped into anything new. I used one mascara wand for each eye. I bought a new mascara each month too. Still do.

I took my makeup off when I came home.

I had to find out why the Wet Ones worked as started posting. It was because they kill Staph. If you are not allergic to detergents, fabric softeners, lanolin or have sensitive skin you may want to give them a try. A few people have told me that their eyelashes have grown back after using the wipes and killing the Bleph.

I hope this gives you some relief to know something can be done. If you can't use the wipes, you can look at the posts on this site that talk about using Tea Tree Oil (needs to be diluted) and Manuka honey.

I tore the hand wipe into 8 strips and wrapped it around my finger tip and wipes across the eyelash area once for each eye. I then went back and did it again. The top one you can close your eye and do it too.

I hope this works for you,

Ok Don’t despair. Maybe wearing contacts is a no go for the fireseable future but symptoms can be managed by incorporating meticulous lid hygiene onto your life. It’s a pain at first but yiur eyes will thank you and you will get back to “almost” as normal as possible

First get a handle on balancing your flora. Some oprho do itby perscribing doxy 50mg twice daily two weeks on, two weeks off. I did it for 15 months because i was do relieved to finally be sble to handle my symptoms. I eventually got worried about taking them and tried going wiuthout but added a tablespopn of aple coder vinegar in six to eight oinces of warm water first thing every morning in order to maintain my git balance which in my case was feeding this bacterial infection that manifested itself as blepharitis.

Anither thing you’ll see recommended is the use of WET ONES (only the red package). Cut one ip in eight pieces. Keep them in a clean jar. Wipe across eye lids, gently back and forth across closed eyes three times a day. Some people do this four or more times a day for three months and claim to be cured. Don't wash it off.

When my lids and undereyes swelled and got sensitive i would use Cereve ointment to sooth theareas. When they itched and burned i took a Zyrtec type allergy pill on the morning so i wouldnt ruby eyes shich vauses puffy red swollen lids.

I alternated Wet Ones usu with washing with a few drops of tea tree oul and baby shampoo a m and p m. Close syes tightly and rub tgat mixture across lids wait about forty seconds and splash wash it off dabbing each eye dry with separAte soft paper towels.

Wash hands often change pillow cases often

And here is maybe the most portant yhing anout this plague. It can be transmitted to your dpouse or someone rlar using your pilloq or even face towel. Youust be meticulous in this rrgard as I’m sure you will be now that you know.

Also running tepid water from a tap onto yoyr hand and over yoyr closed eyes is a grwat relief spmetimes and is the least fussy thing you can do.

Dont wear eye makeup. Throw out what you have. Its contaminated for sure including brushes

Later you can buy  new along with disposable applicators and mascara wands that lots of people use omce they go back to makeup.

    Good luck

Let us know sometime if any of this works for you.

    Best

I had it for over 3 months and nothing worked- a woman in this group posted that her iron was a little low- she took irona nd it went away- I tried everything else so I thought why not? I had my levels checked (not anemia test but a FULL IRON PANEL) my iron was at 50- not super low but after reading about iron, I realized some people need more and feel best at 70-90- so I bought a bottle of gentle iron (so I don't get constipated) 25mg iron biscyicinate and I swear in only a few days it was gone. I use Wet Ones wipes  on my eyes a few times a week just to be extra diligent but its gone and has been for almost a year- good luck- I hope this helps you- I was desperate and no one could help me- I tried everything- THIS WORKED

    Dear Gavinium,

I was able to kill the Blepharitis using Wet Ones, antibacterial hand wipes, in the US. I found it to be a Staph infection in my lashes. People who have lost their lashes have had them grow back in after using the wipes too.

With the help from my daughters, I was able to use makeup and kill it at the same time. If you want that info let me know.

I used the wipes 4 times a day for a week then down to 3 times a day as felt so much better. The last couple of months I used them only 2 times a day. It does take over 3 months to kill it. Some people are allergic to detergents or fabric softeners or have sensitive skin cannot use them.

If you can't use them there are Tea Tree Oil options and others on this site.

Hope this encourages you to keep going,
