I still have a UTI after finishing a course of antibiotics? Why didn't drug kill it all off?

I'm 25 and not sexually active. After having a burning discomfort down there and lower back pains that my doctors were ignoring for weeks to months they finally did a test and discovered I had a UTI. I was put in Macrobid/ nitrofutonin 100mg 1 pill twice a day for 5 days. I took the medicine EXACTLY as prescribed. I was drinking both cranberry juice and water to flush it out completely. I did notice an immediate difference in the pain when I was taking the antibiotics. However, by the 4th day of treatment I noticed My infection stopped responding to the antibiotics. So I just assumed maybe it's residual burning and irritation from having a UTI for awhile. Plus I thought once I finish the course maybe it needed time to kick in so waited a few weeks to see if there would be difference.

So about 3-4 weeks later I decided to go back to the doctor to have my urine retested as the burning would come and go and was still causing me slight discomfort. My results came back today that I still have a UTI. Apparently it's the SAME bacteria from the first time. My lab culture says its "1,000-9,000 cocci gram positive isolated". I'm glad he bacteria hasn't grown back to the 10,000-50,000 amount I was seeing on my culture before after so many weeks. Why didn't the antibiotics kill off ALL of the bacteria? What do I do now? I know for a fact it's not a reinfection it's the SAME UTI that didn't fully clear up. I was still experiencing symptoms after i finished the course. Please help!

Hi, my many years of experience say that 5 days is not long enough. A resistant UTI requires a longer duration of antibiotics although doctors do nit lije to prescribe them. Let me know how you are doing.

You should definitely be taking probiotics with or after the antibiotics as well. First of all, probiotics are good in fighting off bacteria like E.Coli that causes the UTI, then again probiotics support gut health and as a result boost your immune system and overall well being.

Taking antibiotics, kills both the good and bad bacteria in our digestive tract and urinary system and continuous use of it throws the gut flora off balance, hence may result in complications in the future, over continuous use.

You may boost your diet on yogurts and kefir which are great sources of probiotics or try using probiotic supplements. One which I know that is completely natural and reliable is Flourish Probiotics by Eu Natural. A natural combination of good bacteria that supports the urinary tract, fighting off bad bacteria and great for digestion as well.

And needless to say, drink as much water as you can.

yes that is also accurate, but no matter what you first half to have a hands on URO whether nurse practitioner or a doc or another kind of provider. you must kill the infection and like myself i am going on 3 months on meds. everytime i visit a culture is taken on glass plate u know like lab. we started out with prostrate infection, clear urine, but semen showed ecoli. STARTED WITH HEAVY DUTY MEDS SUCKED. 6 weeks, then as ero explained glitter cells replaced the ecoli, now on a step down med nutrafanin sorry. going on 6 weeks with 4 to go.The prostrate was 25% clear as this started. Now other than some itching, rash or two life has been so much more normal. Pain free no back aches etc. He has always explained well and clear. His goal to get clear and see if my own immune system can keep it away. By mid summer we should find out. Again if you are just getting scrips and really have a case of bacterial protatitis you need a solid uro doc. Took me 10 years of off and onand sites like this that time for a change. . Reasearh the docs in your region, study their backgrounds find a match for you no matter where they are.

Some bugs are antiobiotic resistant. I suggest you return to your GP and request Nitrofuratoin (slow release) or Fosfomysin which is recommended by urologists. Importantly, however, if you do fall into a pattern of repeated urine infections then go to a Chinese herbalist and get a formula mixed up which contains Bai Zhu. You can take this on a preventative basis because it contains nothing that will poison you. The repeated use of antibiotics will ruin your natural gut flora which could lead to stomach problems. Moreover, repeated urine infections could lead to inflammation of the bladder, possibly leading onto Leucoplacia - both of which are incredibly painful and disabling.
