I still have a UTI after finishing a course of antibiotics? Why didn't drug kill it all off?

I'm 25 and not sexually active. After having a burning discomfort down there and lower back pains that my doctors were ignoring for weeks to months they finally did a test and discovered I had a UTI. I was put in Macrobid/ nitrofutonin 100mg 1 pill twice a day for 5 days. I took the medicine EXACTLY as prescribed. I was drinking both cranberry juice and water to flush it out completely. I did notice an immediate difference in the pain when I was taking the antibiotics. However, by the 4th day of treatment I noticed My infection stopped responding to the antibiotics. So I just assumed maybe it's residual burning and irritation from having a UTI for awhile. Plus I thought once I finish the course maybe it needed time to kick in so waited a few weeks to see if there would be difference.
So about 3-4 weeks later I decided to go back to the doctor to have my urine retested as the burning would come and go and was still causing me slight discomfort. My results came back today that I still have a UTI. Apparently it's the SAME bacteria from the first time. My lab culture says its "1,000-9,000 cocci gram positive isolated". I'm glad he bacteria hasn't grown back to the 10,000-50,000 amount I was seeing on my culture before after so many weeks. Why didn't the antibiotics kill off ALL of the bacteria? What do I do now? I know for a fact it's not a reinfection it's the SAME UTI that didn't fully clear up. I was still experiencing symptoms after i finished the course. Please help!

After I finished Bactrim, my UTI came back a week later. It did not work for me. My doctor told me to order the Lady Soma Cranberry Concentrate and I wasn't very hopeful because I'd read that research was inconclusive as to the effectiveness of cranberry. Well, I am happy to say that after 2 weeks of taking 2 Lady Soma Cranberry Concentrates a day, my symptoms are GONE. No more frequency, burning or malaise. I am clear! I must say that the first 2 days I started them, I loaded up on water to flush it out and didn't fight urges to go. This really worked for me and I would recommend it to anyone who has this problem.

A UTI requires antibiotics. It can turn into sepsis if it is left to linger. I know, Ive been septic. It can be fatal.

Three months ago, I was battling with a UTI that caused burning urination and extreme discomfort. I found definite relief, not with antibiotics, but with natural remedies, like D-mannose and cranberry capsules. But, symptoms would reappear when I ate any sugary or acidic foods or alcohol. I became anxious, always wondering if this would be the day something would trigger another UTI attack. Also, my vaginal tissue became very irritated whenever I peed, which cause more discomfort. I used virgin coconut oil to soothe that area. I started to think something more has to be done - I cant live like this. Then, the thought occurred to me that the whole urinary track infection (or bladder infection) has to be connected to the health of the kidneys. If you look at the human anatomy pictures of organs in our body, you will see that the kidneys send urine to the bladder to be expelled from the body. The kidney is a filter organ. What if the kidneys were the source of the problem? I had been treating the symptoms, but not the source of the toxins.
I'm a nurse and work with patients that have had kidney failure. Then, I remembered a conversation I had with a patient telling me that his uncle was also showing signs of kidney failure, but had started taking an herb called "Stinging Nettles", and after taking the "Stinging Nettles Root", he reversed his kidney failure. So, I researched about this herb and found out it helps prevent allergies, but also the root helps nourish and cleanse the kidneys. The patient was saying it was a miracle. So, I ordered the "Stinging Nettles Root" in capsule form from Amazon and started taking them daily, hoping it would help the UTI. Within a couple days, all my symptoms started dropping away and were totally gone a week later. I WAS ELATED!! Now whenever I feel any indication of UTI symptoms returning, I immediately start taking the capsules again! No one can understand how desperate we feel with this disorder, unless they experience it themselves. So, I hope this solution helps others, as well!

Well I hate to say it but it appears misery loves company and this is the place. Yep going on 2 years and yep every first time trial from URO doc was a miss or R not good which meant for 4 days your getting worse. Then this transfer in the middle of a med wonder about that. Well I am up to 6 R but then again I might be a tad older than most here but it still sucks. I think having three major surgeries in 10 months for pancreatic cancer might have caught up to the immune system. In any case picking more up today, make sex life with you partner not good. I am going to check and see if I havent moved to being a diabetic. I notice even when all checks on the urine strip the Protien is always wacky. may have over looked that. Lot of body parts removed and there was a potential for that to happen. Look for another root cause., cause my root gets so sore - good luck all anyone who finds a magic solutions please let us all know

Doctors are so scared of antibiotic resistance that they are reluctant to give a long course. They prescribe short courses, and then when the first doesn't work, they try another and another and another. All the while, the bacteria keeps getting smarter and harder to kill off.
Also, IMO a urologist is no better than a regular MD for urinary tract infection. They are only needed if there is some physical problem causing the infection (like stones, a constriction, etc.) and there usually isn't.

True about antibiotics, they are harming people by withholding them.

You have to pursue this. You most likely need s different antibiotic. Remind your doc that UTIs left untreated can result in sepsis. Let me know how you are. Good luck.

Despite what the docs say about needing antibiotics for only three days i need AT LEAST seven days, preferably ten days worth. I blame the repeated uti attacks of my youth on an insufficiently long antibiotic courses.

like most of you on this board i have been going through these start and stop courses of meds for about 18 months. i am a tad older than most of you i believe 70 something. how ever were it not for this naggin issues i still put in 60 hrs working love the job and have an active life. in any case i found a new doc actually an entire group of uros. in nashvile in case any of you are nearby. studied who was specialy in condition and what i might ned if all this didnt work. in any case had a consult and will tell you regard less of what transpires not all docs of the same. as a number of you have pointed out. this visit was excellent he did things in a way hgot his own samples showed me in a microscope what has transpired. there were antbiotics living in prostrate with the ecoli diagnosed now as chronic protatitis with bactereria. i am on an extended course of meds designed to attac the tissue in the prostate to drive them out. the urine was always clear like a number of you poiinted outbut he found these even with clear urine readings. for those of you who know the drill he pumpped the protrate for his own sample, comapred the previous cultures which i kept on file and one on my wallet because i am resistant to a 4 meds. so i am hopeful but clearly this person has explained and shown me the problem which never was done in the prior two years. will say augmentin sucks, but for amonths worth to get rid of this i am hopeful
