I think i fainted after urinating

Hello:

I'm a 38 year old single male, who lives alone. Last year i began to find something odd; that when i urinated, i would begin to feel very faint. At times I would have to stop in the middle of it quickly, and lower myself to the floor or sit on the toilet, in order to regain my composure. I didnt think anything of it, because i have been under stress, so i related it to that. It also happened a few times after.

Early this year, around Feb, i recall getting up in the middle of the night because i had to void. My stream began, but then i felt faint, seeing \"darkness\" and feeling very strange. Like something had come over me. I managed to get back to my bedroom but i fell down to the floor (THUMP)... next thing i remember is crawling into my bed, and waking up in the morning to find a huge scratch on my arm, and my leg being sore.

So, this \"micturition syncope\" situation has now happened approximately 4-5 times, maybe more.. havent kept count !

Today, i awoke from an afternoon nap. Went up the stairs to the bathroom and started to urinate. Low and behold, it started again... feeling faint, dizzy, seeing darkness.. very very weak.... i managed to stagger into my computer room and i must have passed out because i awoke to being on the floor and my phone beeping off the hook... and i hadn't touched it so how was it now off the hook?

This is occurring more frequently now.. I do at times feel kinda fatigued, off and on some days... i thought it was stress, once again....

In the morning i am going to see my family doctor to get some answers. Since i live alone here, with no friends nearby or family, i was so scared and frightenend.. i didnt know if i should call the ambulance or not... i just layed in my bed and prayed that i would feel better... which i did about 30 mins later... still not 100% but better than before... Now everytime I have to go to the bathroom, i'm scared it may happen again.. YIKES... Hopefully i'll get some answers tomorrow from my Dr.

Regards,

E.

I have POTS and although I dont faint when urinating(got dizzy before), I often get a fast heart rate and anxiety with peeing. It can be very disturbing and I dred going to the bathroom. I often sit down and pee even if male. That might be a temporary fix to the above male posters.

Hi yes scarey I know but acutely quite common if your either hypermobile (double jointed) and have low Blood Pressure. I think you should book an appointment ASAP not because your fainting (medical term Syncope) but because your living on your own. If the GP surgery is fully booked until Christmas then I would suggest A&E! I not trying to worry you far from it, it's just that you might really hurst yourself and nobody will know. If you have a BP monitor I would check it! If you feel dizzy when standing it may be POTS no your nor going mad, just the your body is a bit out of rhythm at the moment. So GP ASAP or A&E as we are now so close to Xmas. Please avoid alcohol too until they find the cause, but please don't stress as it will make your POTS worse. I'm 68 and have been POTSy for 28 years! Good Luck🍀

I am surprised I haven't read what I'm about to add  discussion, particularly as a number have consulted with their doctor.

First please let me say that it would always be wise to consult a doctor is you have a fainting event.

Fainting at night when urinating (actually it doesn't have to be at night,  just after sleeping or an extended period of relaxing/reclining on a lounge....) is not an uncommon event,  particularly for men.  Fortunately it is normally not a frequent event.

What happens when we sleep is that our blood pressure drops. If we get up to go to urinate the movement from a horizontal attitude to a vertical one means that gravity can have a greater influence over the blood supply to the head than your blood pressure. This can mean that for a moment you may have reduced blood supply to the brain.  As men often stand while urinating then this situation can be prolonged.  Also, (need this confirmed by a doctor) apparently the process of urinating may also result in subtle changes in blood flow ie a reduction of flow to the brain)

    Some suggestions as to how to reduce the possibility of fainting;

    a)  as already mentioned,  see your doctor (you may have blood pressure issues

    b)  if you need to urinate after being asleep, or reclining for some time, move into a sitting position for a few moments before standing.

    c) (particularaly for men) Try sitting on the toilet to urinate (women tend to do this anyway)  There are a number of possible benefits   :

      i)   less likely to exacerbate lower blood flow to the brain

ii)  less distance to fall if you do faint (and so less likely to do major damage)

iii) less likely to miss and mess on or around the toilet...  (the cleaner will appreciate this...)

It happened to me 1st time today.. being very scared I searched internet .. and that lead me to here... I just fell down suddenly unconscious after urinating and regained consciousness when my legs banged on the floor.. I suddenly stood up thinking what happened.. and again unconscious for a moment.. this time I banged my forehead on the wall sad

Did same thing as many of you had done.. after a quick nap.. suddenly woke up and went to toilet.. Looks like I have to be cautious from now..

Hi I think you might have POTS you need to see a neurologist to test this. It won't hurt just a 24 hour heart monitor then can be done at home. Good luck and try not to worry many people have this. Don't smoke or drink alcohol or cola put increase your water consumption as this will help jeep yourself well hydrated at all times.

Thank you all for this discution.

It happend to me yesterday and I still have pain on back of my head! It was my third time in last 10 years. First time it was because of grill gas, Carbon monoxide, second time I drank alcohole but neither yesterday! I just laid down for some hours and you know the rest! ha ha ha!

I just recognized it is comming and tried to sit but apparentaly it was already late! I just waked up frightened and it took some seconds to remember where I am an what happened and then a sound like tire fill up in my head and a pain on back of my head. I guess I hit my head to somewhere when I woke up!

there is no choice, I have to remember to sitt for a while instead of jumping from bed to the toilet!

I had suffered 9 pass outs in 31 years and like to share with others with the same problems.  My 2nd pacemaker is in need for new battery.  My recent visit (11/20/2017) to a specialist at Johns Hopkins and he feels that my pass out has to do with vasovagal and pacemaker may not help in this situation – he turned off my pacemaker.  In 3 months we will decide if I should remove the pacemaker or replace it with a new pacemaker.  The following is my pass out history that I would like to share with you:

Pass out and near pass out history of Asian Male, DOB 7/7/1951, 160 lbs, Non-smoker and non-drinker.

*September 1971         20 years old. Took a very hot bath, passed out on the bathroom floor.  Felt my legs were kicking while on the floor.  Regain conscious right away, went to bed and felt asleep.

*October, 1972            21 years old.  Drank a bottle of beer (12 oz) and went to bathroom downstairs.  Felt dizzy while urination (standing) passed out and fell to the floor.

*March, 1978              26 years old. Drank a bottle of beer and went to bathroom.  Felt dizzy while urination (standing) and passed out.

*June 1978                  27 years old. Drank a bottle of beer and went to bathroom.  Felt dizzy while urination (standing) and passed out.

*1981                          30 years old. Drank a bottle of beer and went to bathroom, felt dizzy while urination (standing) and passed out.

10/9/1982                    31 years old.  Play ball with nephews, felt tired, went to urination (standing), felt dizzy and almost passed out.  Check into Huntington Hospital emergency room and was told EKG and blood pressure were normal.

10/10/1982                  31 years old. Arrive Hong Kong (24 hours flight) rushed from the plane to immigration (quite a distance) felt very dizzy while standing on line – blacked out for several seconds but did not passed out.

3/23/1983                    32 years old. 2D Echogram test = normal.  Holter indicated an AV block.

*2/21/1992                  40 years old.  Had fever and sore throat, took Amoxicillin (Biocraft 01) and 2 Comtrex at 9PM, wake up at 5AM and took 1 more Amoxicillin and 2 Tylenols and went back to sleep.  The next morning woke up at 9AM went to urination (standing), felt very dizzy, passed out on the floor and went into SEIZURE.  Get out of SEIZURE for about 2 minutes and went back into SEIZURE again.  Checked into Huntington Hospital for observation.

*2/23/1992                  Nurse woke me at 5AM, standing up in front of the bed then I felt very dizzy and passed out.  I was told my heart rate had slowed to 5 beats/min.  Pace maker was inserted on 2/24/1992.

March 1992                 40 years old.  Pacemaker lead was put at wrong location – it causes hiccups.  Went to see an electrophysiology at St. Francis Hospital.  Tilt table test under EP Cather.  Almost passed out when the table was tilted.  EP study indicated the natural pace maker was functioning well; syncope was due to vasovagal attack.  Put me on Antenolol for 10 days and redid the tilt table test – I didn’t pass out.  Instead of removing the Pace maker it was set at 30 BPM.

3/16/1999                    48 years old.  Slipped on ice – felt very dizzy, almost vomited, and lay down and the episode lasted about 5 minutes.

*11/24/1999                Run on treadmill at .1 mile mark, the heart rate is at 131 bpm.  Tried to go little faster at .15 miles, the heart rate was at 81 bpm. (I was going faster but my heart rate is decreasing).  Sat down on the breakfast table and passed out for about 10 seconds.  Check into Huntington Hospital for 36 hours – holder reveal normal cardiac function and blood enzymes (every 8 hours) were normal.

*2002                          51 years old.  Passed out in the shower.

2/12/2004                    53 years old.  Old pacemaker was replaced with new St. Jude pacemaker.

1/2/2016                      64 years old.  In the morning resting heart rate was about 120.  Took a Metroprolo 25mg ER, heart rate still around 100, took another Metroprolo.  1 hour after medication felt very dizzy immediately lie down on the floor; try to check my plus but it was very weak.  I-phone heart rate monitor showed heart rate of 50 bmp for about 15 seconds then heart rate went back up to about 80 bpm.

1/13/2016                    Irregular heart rate in the morning (79-112 in 48 seconds span) took 1 Metroprolo. Felt dizzy, immediately sat down on the floor; try to check my plus but it was very weak.  I-phone heart rate monitor showed heart rate of 34 bmp for about 15 seconds then heart rate went back up to normal.

    *Actually passed out.

    Total # of pass out in 31 years (1971 – 2002) =                                                                      9 times

Total # of pass out related to beer drinking =                                                               4 (44.44%)

Total # of pass out while standing up =                                                                                   9 (100%)

Total # of pass out related to urination (standing up) =                                                            5 (55.55%)
