I think I have Blepharitis- advice, lashes grow weird?

hi I think i have blepharitis - ive had problems with styes and a huge bump under my lid, in april. The eye doctor told me to put warm compresses until it was gone. But then another stye returned after it was gone - and the eye doc then told me i maybe had to put warm compresses on my eye for the rest of my life.. without really explaining why or giving me a diagnosis? I still felt like something was wrong with my eyes.. but i kept doing what he said. I've been scared of using contacts and makeup on eyes because I feel like itll come back if i do it. But im so unhappy and now ive noticed my lashes grow weird places and are a bit shorter than the others and less thick than usual - my eyelids are sometimes a little red - and sometimes my lids also look swollen (but im the only one who notices that) - my lashes fall off sometimes .. i also have this red spot or what to call it on my upper waterline with small bumps ( only on left eye)..

no one really wants to listen or help me sort it out. My family think ive been reading too much on google so they are tired of listening to me, and i definitely have become very obsessed with it.. im going to see an eye specialist next week so i hope to sort it out then. But I just want a bit advice on how to handle this and if its easy to live with and accept. so far its been hard mentally, because im a huge makeup lover, and i cant live without contact lenses - now i wear no eye makeup and glasses and i dont feel like myself. it probably sounds ridiculous but, i just feel like i lost a part of myself, a part of what i love.

and im absolutely tired of wearing glasses - is it even possible for me to get lasik surgery? or wear contacts again? or makeup?

i dont have the other symtomps as: feeling of burning eyes, itchy ( rarely), sensitive to light, oily eyelids, sticky eyes (or my lashes can sometimes stick to each other when i blink?),

god this message is probably annoying, but i'm just so worried and sad and id really like to talk to someone who know about this and can help.

btw i rinse my eyes with camomile tea in the lorning and night - and i have these wipes for the eyes that i use - also i steam my face every night as well..

Don't lose heart. If you have blepharitis, it can usually be managed. I have had it for about 7-8 years and use Wet Ones wipes to keep it under control. If you find that Wet Ones do not help, there are many other suggestions offered by others on this site that are good to try. My eyelashes grew back, and I do wear eye makeup. Whenever my blepharitis flares up, I use the wipes several times a day until it settles down. Good luck.

thank you so much for replying

do you have more advice on eye makeup?

i used to wear falsies and mascara, eye shadow and liquid eyeliner.

im just worried i'll make it worse by wearing it every day (as i used to). But i just really miss it.

also do you know if its safe to wear contact lenses as well?

did your lashes grow back normally or grow weird places?

I wear false eyelashes -- especially when I have lash loss, but I always wear mascara "Lash Paradise", gel or pencil liner and eye shadow. I remove all that eye makeup every single night with oily eye makeup remover pads, wash my lids and use my Wet Wipes. I don't wear false eyelashes all the time because it seems for me to be a bit irritating. Lash extensions would probably make it too difficult for me to clean the lash margins enough to keep ahead of the blepharitis. Hope this helps.

what kind of falsies do you wear? And what kind of glue do you use?

for how long do you wear the makeup?

sorry im asking so many questions - i feel like my lids are getting worse after this party i went to where i had makeup on my eyes for too long. my lids were very swollen and red after i removed the makeup and they felt soar.. they still feel a little bit soar now.. and im still doing my normal routine but they still look a bit swollen near the lashes

I wear Ardell demi-wispies and DUO brush-on eyelash glue in the green package. I don't wear them everyday, but when I have missing lashes, I'll wear them from morning until I'm home for the day or remove as early in the evening as I can. After I remove them, I clean my lash margins meticulously. Oily mascara remover, wash, Wet Wipes, and moisturize. If I see that my eyes appear swollen, I use the Wet Wipes several times before bed and again in the morning before makeup. Hope that helps. It's probably different for everyone, so trial and error. Good luck to you.

so you don't wear it for several hours? i think i've been wearing mine for too many hours and that made my lids red and swollen after...

can you wear eyeshadow? if u do which brand do you use?

what kind of wet wipes do you use?

      also are your eyelids red?

    Dear Elle,

If you are not allergic to Fabric softeners or detergents, lanolin or aloe you can give the Wet Ones, antibacterial hand wipes a try. I have killed Blepharitis 2 times using them. Just finished last month doing it again because I left mascara on as used water to remove. Big mistake. It seems to be a Staph infection and anything left on the lashes seems to be food for it to grow. I went back to get glasses and they could not see it so it was gone.

You need to get new makeup and buy throw away mascara wands. You need to wash each eye with a different wash cloth or opposite ends of the same cloth. One eye could be getting better and you would keep infecting it if you don't do that.

You can kill the Blepharitis and wear makeup too. You just have to be extremely careful.

I used the Wet Ones, antibacterial hand wipes 4 times a day for the first week as it was driving me crazy itching. After that I went down to 3 times a day then the last couple of months 2 times a day. It took over 3 months to kill it.

The ingredient in the Wet Ones is Benzethonium Chloride and it kills Staph. Do your homework and look online for all the information on this subject.

My daughter used the Wet Ones to kill a stye on her eye and she said it took a couple of days but she did use it a day or so longer to make sure it would stay gone.

There have been several people who have had their lashes grow back after using the Wet Ones so don't give up.

I did not miss a day when using them as it comes right back people have said if they don't go the whole mile and use them for 3 months.

I use a new mascara each month and never double dip into it. Always put a throw away mascara wand into it and use one for each eye. Take off the mascara as soon as you come home. I use a make up remover that is non oily now and then soap and water and then a Wet One to make sure it is off my lashes.

Eye Shadow can be worn in the crease of the eye and not so close to the lashes and use one that is not powdery. If you want the name of it let me know. It was $30 but lasts forever.

Be sure and not use any of your old make up as you will reinfect yourself. There are applicators that look kinda like a cue-tip (cotton bud) with a sharp end and a flat end. I used those for the eye area and used 1 for each eye.

Hope this helps and let me know if I missed anything,

      Lynda,

Since COVID started, I can not find the Wet Ones with Benzethonium Chloride. I had ordered them from Amazon before, but now when I order, they send the ones with Bezalkthonium Chloride and they do not work as well. Have you been able to find the original ones? If so where?

Thanks and I hope you are doing well.

      Dear Sandra,

Because of the Pandemic people are buying these wipes up but they will not kill a virus on the hands only bacteria.

You will have to keep trying and maybe you can get some.

The ones in the UK use Benzalkonium Chloride and there was a person on this site, Honjon, who did use these and it got rid of it for him. I have heard that they are a lot harsher but they may help to keep it under control using once a day until you can get the right ones. Just flush eyes with water or drops if get in the eye. If it bothers you then you can try the Manuka Honey from New Zealand until it becomes available.

Sorry, not much help this time.

I hope you find something to help,

      Hi Lynda,

Thank you for the information. I had my eyes under control until the Pandemic. Then the wipes I bought were different with Benzalkonium and they are not as effective. I will keep trying to find them.

Hope you are well and staying safe. I was happy to hear from you.

      Thanks,

      Sandra

      Dear Sandra,

It was nice to hear from you too. Sorry you have to go through this. Check Target too and perhaps drug stores online.

    Hi Elle,

I've been diagnosed with blepharitis because of meibomian gland disorder. I'm on treatment now, and it takes a good while to get over this flare-up. I've been told eye hygiene will be life-long, ie hot compress, massage and lid wipes. I've also had to minimise any eye-make-up and when I do use any, it has to be hypoallergenic. Me with no eye-liner was a bit of a shock to me at first, but I am getting used to my new look and my eyes actually do look fresher. Another complication I have is ingrowing eye lashes, which can be quite irritating, so I have to pluck them out carefully. I would suggest that you see a consultant ophthalmologist for a definite diagnosis and hope all will go well for you.

    hi how are .

well seeing what your writing makes me feel I am talking to myself! like seriously that exactly how it started with me and I am a makeup fan too ( not heavy but I cant live without mascara and eyeliner at least ). and I loved wearing colored lenses ..

so let me tell you something , the good news is that you can contain and maintain it with continuous eye hygiene and lubrication. and thanks God you used the warm compresses since ever the dr told you because yesss! seriously without it the case could have reoccur every other day like what happened to me !

I started with very small nonpainful chalazion that developed to a huge one and got infected and caused me severe headaches and eye pain .. with lots of antibiotics and steroids it barely subsided but left a noticeable bump on my upper lid .. not continiouing on warm compresses unknowingly made the eye chalazions experience every other day with deficulty for it to go .. ! I lost my mind, patience , was in fear all the time of sleeping and waking up with a new one .. it just didn't stop and the on other eye... Now a key secret if you are using dairy products stop them for a time ..

for me it was from it .. it seemed I overused for a period dairy products due to my diet routine and it flared up this with the change of hormones.

Once I stopped it I started management phase . where it didn't grow as long as I DONT put make up at all on my eyes and maintain hygine , warm pads every day and lubricate with eye drops all day.

the bad news is unfortunately it seems to be like a blepharitis case. And as per my readings blepharitis is likely to be chronic..

to be honest after 1 year suffering with recurring chalazia I preferred not to wear eye make up than suffering and undergoing surgery to remove..

It took me time to accept how I look coz I loved the way I looked with eye make up so do ppl .. but then I had to make a decision to love me as in all regardless makeup to avoid longer term suffer.

to your points, blepharitis also slightly caused changes to my lashes some of them started to grow in weird directions and caused me blurriness at times and sensitivity to light..

what I am trying to say please take care if you didn't develop these symptoms yet and you will be fine ..

am sure you are pretty no matter what make up adds .. but take care of your eyes as this is the most critical thing

long story short. You will be fine hopefully without makeup , occasional shud be fine 🙂

I advise you to use blephasol wipes for eye cleansing and lubricate with eye drops always.

    God bless

My eyelashes would grow weird too - A few months ago I had weird short stubby eyelashes that didnt seem to grow properly, and one or two that would seem to grow at weird angles and feel strange, like one or two are growing into the eyelid or poking my eyelid if that makes sense?

For myself, using Manuka Honey eyedrops at least 2 - 3 times a day has helped this part of the problem as my eyelashes are now growing normally, are soft and long again - which means they are not growing weirdly like they used to. It hasnt helped the redness but does feel better.

      Hi,

i am currently experiencing what the original poster said- new eyelashes growing weirdly etc. where did you get the manuka honey from/ what name or brand did you buy? i was only diagnosed with bleph a month ago but want to tackle it now before it gets worse.

also how did you apply the honey? i've seen that others dilute it.

      thanks

What brand of Manuka Honey eye drops do you use and where do you buy them?

    • Edited

There is only one Manuka Honey eye drop in the world, made in Queensland Australia - can't put the brand here because it will be deleted anyway. I bought it from a local pharmacy.
