I've got shingles

Hi,

Ive had shingles now for about 2 weeks. I only noticed the blisters about 7days ago. Though I had pain under my breast and round to my back. I was treating the rash for a day or two with sudocrem thinking it was a heat rash. (I've quite large breasts) then noticed blisters and it spreading.

after reading this forum I'm assuming I had a mildish attack.

it painful but I try not to take much pain relief. Only at night. I had to ask gp for Amytriptline. She only gave me antiviral meds.

I work for a palliative community team.

My gp did not think I needed to go off on the sick. I took a few annual leave days and with my usual days off, will be off for just over a week.  Is this enough?

My family and friends are telling me different.

I feel,ok except for the pain. Get a fairly good nights sleep now after taking amytriptiline.

Indont seen to suffer the awful, fatigue some of you speak off.

Though I did at the beginning.

What should I do? Go off on the sick? Or try to go back to see how I am.

    Ruth,

I would take more days off and rest. The problem is, if you overdo the work, the pain becomes more severe, and it is harder to relieve it.

Your GP put you on Antivirals for 7 days, didn't he? They stop the virus from replicating, so it is important to finish them.

I do hope your case is mild. May I ask your age, Ruth?

    Best Wishes

    Merry Juliana

      Hi Juliana,

      I’m just turned 60

I’ve Been   helpng look after my mum who has cancer, working full time , palliative care which is very intense and took a chest virus which was very severe.

Whilst I feel ok I’m worried if I go back to work after only 1 week that this may get worse ?

I haven’t been of work sick in nearly 12 years.

I agree with all the helpful posts here. Shingles vaccine is another way to go once your symptoms have gone. The vaccine can be given even if you have a shingles break out. The vaccine has helped the breakouts and are less severe and not as frequent as they were before the vaccine for herpes zoster virus was given.

I am surprised that you were not advised to have the herpes zoster virus immunization which helps control the outbreaks .

Ruth, for me Amytriptiline had no effect for me at all, even after 2 months. I could not tell I was taking it. Currently in the early days of Gabapentine, but too early to tell if it is beneficial ........ Regards

      Hi Marcia.

In England, if Gabapentin fails, I might be referred to a Specialist Pain Clinic. However, my usual local experienced General Practitioner (GP) wants to try the Gabapentin first :-(  I suspect that the Pain Clinics might go down the Opioid route ?? Anyone gone that way ?

To be honest Colin, I dint see much effect with it either. Mayb slightly. Other than to help me sleep. I've taken paracetamol about 30-60 mins after it, and that combination has helped.

Moorfields eye Hospital does have  a `walk in' Clinic. I do not know the hours though. (BTW, I worked out of Moorgate, EC2 for 20 odd years ! although I was sometimes on postings in the UK and Abroad) All the best, Colin.

I went to the Moorfields A and E tonight. It is 24 hours. The wait was over 5 hours .I was screened to decide whether I was an emergency and passed that test. However there was only one doctor on who was operating on a very serious emergency.I didn't know how I would get back to South London in the middle of the night. They thought I could wait until tomorrow and come back.Which I will do.

I worked out of Moorgate for over 20 years too!

Barbara - Moorfields looks like it does have long waits at times..... a problem with most of the NHS these days..... I waited months for a stent earlier in 2016, but the outcome was good. Regards, Colin

Glad you got your stent.Terrible on the news tonight about patients dying waiting in corridors. Will take lots of code words to do tomorrow!

Dear Barbara - I am afraid that found the communication between the various bits of the Hertfordshire Hospital Trusts to be somewhat lacking. One time I had a blood test at the new QE2, Welwyn, and it could not be seen at the Nephrology outpatient Clinic at St Albans..... then all my details vanished off the screen ! (later restored) So my trusty laptop got a bit of use in 2016 ! Anyhow, I hope it is not too bad at Moorfields today .... all the best, Colin.

After 4 ER visits and 3 doc visits in 12 days I was dx with Shingles.

On a Wednesday evening I began to have pain in my left lower back. On Thursday I called my Urologist, thinking it was a kidney stone. On Friday @ 9am I had an X-ray to see if it was a stone. By Friday afternoon, I had not heard back from my Urologist, so I called. They stated they did not have a result back and that if I was in 'that' much pain to go to the ER. Later in the afternoon I went to the local ER. A CT was done to determine if there was a kidney stone. There was not. I was told that my pain was a muscle strain and was given a couple medications. I knew it was not muscle, but went home with the medication. The medication did nothing to alleviate my pain. The pain continued to get worse and worse. It was not muscle pain. So on Sunday night (new years eve 2017) my husband took me back to the ER. The ER doctor told me it was muscle pain but I needed different pain medication. He gave me stronger pain medication. I went home, took my medication and the pain continued to increase. On Wednesday I went to my doctor’s office and saw the Nurse Practitioner.  She increased my muscular pain medication and stated I should look into physical therapy. I went home that day, by evening I was in so much pain that my husband again to me to the ER. The ER doctor was rude and very unsympathetic to me. He even said to me, I know it is not muscular pain and I needed to see my PCP. He then said, it’s Shingles within a week you will have the rash. Then he left and sent me home. The next morning I saw my PCP, wonderful doctor. He checked me over, felt my abdomen and told me it was Diverticulitis. He gave me an injection of an antibiotic and started me a high dose of antibiotic. I told him I was leaving that afternoon to drive 900 miles to my nephews wedding. He told me to go that I should start to feel better the next day or so. I got to the wedding rehearsal dinner and couldn’t stay I was in so much pain. I then went to the wedding on Saturday afternoon. I was unable to eat or stay at the wedding reception. The night went on and I was in more and more pain. My husband took me to the ER (out of state). The doctor was very nice, did a CT and told me no kidney stone and no diverticulitis. She gave me anti-anxiety medication. Why – I guess I was just making up the pain in my head. We traveled home all day and night on Sunday and at 9am on Monday I was in seeing my doctor. At that time he was worried about an abscess. I then told him I think I have a small rash on my waist, left side. He looked at it and immediately said, it’s Shingles. He put me on anti-viral medication and Gabapentin.  I have been treated now for 4 days (Thursday) and I am doing a bit better but still hurt.

      Hi,

Your situation does sound similar to mine only I didn’t bother going to doc with the pain in my lower back . I treated with brufen etc but like you nothing worked and I carried on working. Pain continued round the left front and then a week ago the rash appeared.

I’ve been on antiviral tablets for 7 days now. Still pain and still tired.

So no, you shouldn’t feel alright yet 😟
