Hi. I got told by doc about 2 months ago that i had ibs. Was back to a different doc today and told them that it all happend after i came home from honeymoon which means it could be a bug in my stomach. Did anyone elses start off like this? Then doc said if it is that it could take up to 8 months to get better.

Not heard of this. Mine built up over time. May get easier if control your food to low fat diet. Avoid hot spicy foods. Fizzy drinks, tea and coffee. It can come in waves, b if you do have a bug then can't see how it's Irritable bowel but I am not a doctor. Hope it is a bug and you will be on the mend.

if you have a bug then it wll be one of two types,  Bacterial - where did you go for your honemoon - in which case it should be possible to treat with antibiotics and if needs be stool samples.  Or it might be a virus which can take ages to clear up.  Either can create IBS like symptoms.but they are not IBS  IBS is a real illness but it is diagnosed by excluding other causes like bugs..   How long ago was your honeymoon ie how long have you had symptoms, have they done any tests. Normally deoending on symptom doctors will do various tests including blood tests, stool samples, possibly colonoscopy then once everything else has been excluded they say IBS.  UNless there is a good reason why not your doctors should do some tests

I got blood tests done the first time i went to doc not sure what they looked for but was told they came back clear. Iv now to do a stool sample. I came bk from honeymoon at the end of july. The first timeni had t i had really sore stomach and was sweating then was sick and had diahreia. It then kindof went away but not properly then i had t again then iv had sore stomachs since. It might jist be a coincidence but would like to rule everythjng else out

Just been replying to someone else's thread about post infectious IBS. I first started having it after I had a kidney infection 4 years ago, and since then it happens to me almost every time after I get sick (stomach flu, UTI etc.,) I get IBS badly. I have it at the moment because I had an upset stomach 4 or 5 weeks back. Now my IBS symptoms are horrible, probably worse than the stomach flu itself! So, it definitely can happen. Mine usually takes 1-2 months to settle down but I just try to relax, eat well and stay healthy.

    Diane,

We don't really know enough about IBS and it's relationship with bugs. Some of the research is now indicating that IBS might well be caused by a virus which the bowel is reacting to. Little is published on this subject at the moment but there does seem to be evidence that some people get IBS after an infection. I was actually taken to hospital with bowel pains, given blood tests and was told that my infection markers were up. I was put on IV metronidazole and ciprofloxacine and was told it had done the job after 3 days. I felt OK when I left the hospital but it was later that I developed the full IBS with constipation symptoms which was confirmed after a colonoscopy. The reason GP's are so vague on the subject is because they really don't know what is wrong. Perhaps in a few years time we will get some answers. Lets hope so anyway.

    Best regards

Hi Diane - my mother is the one with IBS, and I am her caretaker.  She is 89 yrs old now.  I can remember the specific time she started with symptoms because she and my dad went on a cruise 10 yrs ago and when she returned home, she was complaining of IBS symptoms.  Of course we didn't attribute her symptoms to IBS, but rather a "neuro/virus" of the he digestive system that is picked up on board a cruise ship. We all know how contagious these neuro viruses are. Well - to make a long story short, the cruise was roughly 10 yrs ago and she has had IBS symptoms ever since. She never got the symptoms under control all this time.  She was tested for C-diff, and other bacterial and viral diseases, but she is negative for these. Her geriatric care physician has her diagnosed with IBS. So - I find it very ironic that your symptoms developed after your honeymoon and my Mom's after her cruise trip. I don't  have any answers to this, but it is interesting indeed.

I know some people dont believe in these kind of things but i was willing to try anythjng so i went to a kinesiotherapist who told me the problems were coming from the electrics in the air e.g wifi, phone masts etc. she said my stomach had been fried by it. She has given me herbal tablets to protect and reline my stomach. I went on monday and already find a big difference. I will see how it goes, hopefully not just a coicidence.

I have very similar symptoms. Ever since having a bad stomach virus and then going out of the country I have been having very odd bowel symptoms. Doctors haven't figured out what's wrong yet but have led to ibs. Not that I don't believe my doctor, but I think it was just an easy way out. Usually ibs comes in waves and isn't a constant stomach pain for 2 months like I've had. Hopefully we all find answers soon.
