IBS and nausea

Hello.

I started with IBS symptoms last year. It started with a very annoying and loud gurgling tummy. It was so weird. I would eat to try and stop it but it actually made it worse. Also I started having diarrhoea after I ate. I also suffer from constipation too. I've had lots of flare ups of this but I get very nauseas too. I have Googled it and it does say it can be a symptom but I have friends with IBS and they don't get nausea.

I get very bloated and my tummy constantly gurgles. Last fare up I lost 8 lb in 2 weeks. I don't really get cramps just a big gurgle then I need to go the toilet. Also my flare ups seem to last week's! I'm not constantly on the toilet it's just when I eat. About half an hour after eating I'm on tge toilet. The nausea is driving me mad. Does anyone else get this and is there anything I can take to help? Peppermint doesn't do anything for me

I used to have diarrhoea before I ate as in first thing in the morning and then I could not eat. Now it can be a anytime but that is how it started. I would always suffer sickness to the point where my dentist said it was damaging my teeth.

If you move between constipation and illness so do I.

Losing weight is is common I am sure and I am almost 3 stone lighter than I was when this first started.

I was always ill about 2 hours from first having cramps, then diarrhoea and then sickness so for me that was always the last thing I would just start coughing and it would just happen. Occasionally I had both symptoms simultaneously but more often the vomiting was on its own.

I changed my diet at this point and started drinking much water. I am still ill but nowhere near as badly as I was and my teeth have stopped rotting. Just to let know sickness is damaging to ones teeth.

I introduced more fruit and veg and cut out ready meals but I ate very badly

Have a look at your diet would be your first point I would say

Hello there sezza I have the bloating symptoms and sometimes the stomach grumbles.however I don't suffer the diarrhoea, my problems are constipation . And that is why it is called a syndrome because of every persons different symptoms. But at the end of it all ibs is a very debilitating problem

Oh no. I feel for you as I get that too. Thanks for your advise

My IBS started last February/March.  It began with constipation, constant stomach pain, on off nausea and then a short period of loose motions.  I have dull pain mainly, occasionally sharp or sore to touch pain.  Usually, I can ignore the pain and it will subside on its own.  Sometimes, I have agonising flare ups with nausea and I don't know where to put myself.  I take Buscopan and painkillers, Nurofen is the best.  After the pain goes, it leaves me exhausted.  Fortunately, I don't have many episodes like this.

I tried Peppermint tea which soothed nothing and gave me heartburn.  The doctor, tried me on Mebeverine which gave me appalling indigestion within minutes of taking the first tablet.  Food has no affect on my symptoms, but stress does.  Milk soothes my stomach and helps with nausea which comes on if I have bad pain.

However, treating IBS is trial and error.  What works for some may not work for others.

Sorry to hear about your flare ups. They sound awful. Mine is definitely stress. I had a bad flare up before Christmas then I had 2 weeks off work for the Christmas break and my tummy waw back to normal! It's very draining.

I suppose having IBS is like living with an unwelcome guest, never knowing when a bad attack will strike.  However, I have found medication that works and I understand my symptoms better and I am no longer frightened by them.  Waiting for diagnosis was the worst part because of all the stressful tests which gave the doctors no leads at all, their lack of knowledge and the daily battle with anxiety, terror, panic and despair.

I am not in work at the current time, illness etc, but I still get ill which is how I know it is not completely stress.

I know what you mean.. I've had tests I had a colonoscopy. The lady who did it said my intestines looked inflamed but then the consultant said it was and the biopsies say so! I was passing blood and mucus for months. They put it down to constipation because I didn't go the loo everyday! Plus the consultant actually said 'it's not cancer you are too young'. I write a letter of complaint and was seen by another gastro consultant within a week. It's sad what you have to go through fot a diagnosis.

Passing blood may be due to haemorrhoids so something to check. They do seem to go hand in hand with constipation sadly. I do not go to the loo everyday. Also without being too negative and knowing someone who was in a cancer unit the big C does not discriminate on age. Glad you had your appointment. Personally I don't like the idea of complaining as I have no idea what may happen. I had friends work in kitchens in restaurants at university so to this day knowing what they told me I have never sent food back in a restaurant.

Haha oh no I wouldn't send food back EVER 🙈 I complained as I wasn't happy with him fobbing me off and assuming because of my age it wouldn't be cancer. The next consultant ordered me the camera so I was just glad you get it checked out.

They said it was because of constipation and ibs. There was no internal cuts when I had the camera though!

Glad to hear it. It sounds like you did the right thing. I am not very good at complaining. Definitely right to never assume. I remember when I had my first one. A surreal experience lying on one's side with the doctor saying nurse bring me the camera. I am used to it now as I have had a good few. It is endoscopies I do not like.

I don't like that either. They offered me that to see if I'm celiac but I refused as I know exaxtly what it's like and it's awful! I have a sick phobia so to have a camera shoved down your throat to make you retch for minutes is horrible.

I had an endoscopy years ago.  I thought they would use a local anaesthetic but they used a very toxic sedation and I got depression within 24 hours which lasted three weeks.  I complained at my check up an all they said was this was an unusual reaction.  However, this was untrue because I later read by chance that twilight sedation causes depression and is very dangerous.

I went private for this procedure, a lot of money was wasted, nothing was found and I had a bad reaction!

Thought I was the only who struggled with things like that. With my NHS they just send a letter saying this is dust is happening on this day so as g/f at the time put it I had to man up. I am only very loosely male so easier said than done for me. I did warn them that I am sick very easily as when I have an IBS attack I only have to cough once and it happens so he was aware of the danger but it was fine and I was not ill despite coughing like mad and him saying keep still! It was one thing trying not be ill but quite another when you have a tube choking you and him saying try to forget it is there. How the heck anyone manages that I don't know and after all that and him telling me I am a tense person it came back all clear. More joys of IBS smile

I had one recently and I do not remember receiving any injection to null pain. Maybe I complained on that day. This is what you get when you complain smile

Maybe I should be glad I had no injection if that was the side effect. Many of these things have side effects. Normally for me all side effects equal diarrhoea so I try to steer clear but for me the slightest thing can cause this as I was in a supermarket a few months ago all shopping complete and bagged up and realised I had forgotten my wallet. I was so annoyed with myself within 5 mins I left it all and ran to the loo. It was an hour walk back and never did go back later.

I thought Twilight Sedation was the irrisistible urge to drop once having picked up a Stephanie Meyer novel smile. Joking aside I will have to look that up as not heard of it.

Yes that makes it worse. I waited for the NHS. I only go private on company insurance. That is the truth too,

Oh gosh really. That's awful. I only had the threat spray as I wanted to get out of the hospital as soon as I was done. Although if i had to do it again I think I'd choose sedation. Poor you. Have you been diagnosed with IBS?

      Throat spray that should say!

I learned an important lesson with that one!  I rather suspect I will be a terrible nuisance to doctors if I ever need any invasive procedure again especially if it involves pain and pain medication.  When I had my ultrasound, I also had to have an internal examination as well.  I couldn't cope with the discomfort and it had to be abandoned.

I was was told I would have to have a CAT or MRI to make up for this along with a repeat of the standard ultrasound because some things could not be seen.  This filled me with horror because of the wait, the test and result.  However, I saw an eight doctor who said it was unnecessary, much to my relief!

I got diagnosed with IBS last May after three and a half months.  I started getting symptoms in mid March but looking back  I had stomach pain in February which cleared up.

Indeed an awful lesson but one never to forget. Luckily my procedures have not been invasive apart from the rear camera but that is fine. That sounds bally awful re: internal examination. I thought ultrasound was easy option but not so. Yes I can understand your horror and I even think I may have broken into my piggy bank to go private if I thought there could be something hidden and then told see you in 6 months. Yes that would panic anyone. Glad it was unnecessary,

Glad you had a diagnosis now. For me I had to go through the horrible tests to rule out anything bad so I can then learn to live with what I have. As horrible as the tests are and as scary as the waiting for results is and wondering what's going on you need to go through that process to be able to move forward. I was adament I had bowel cancer as everything I Googled led to that and no other IBS suffer passed blood.

I googled too and convinced myself I had all sorts of nasty conditions.  Most doctors had no idea what was wrong and I was desperately trying to give them something to work on.  I suppose I was lucky because some people wait years for diagnosis.
