IBS and nausea

Hello.

I started with IBS symptoms last year. It started with a very annoying and loud gurgling tummy. It was so weird. I would eat to try and stop it but it actually made it worse. Also I started having diarrhoea after I ate. I also suffer from constipation too. I've had lots of flare ups of this but I get very nauseas too. I have Googled it and it does say it can be a symptom but I have friends with IBS and they don't get nausea.

I get very bloated and my tummy constantly gurgles. Last fare up I lost 8 lb in 2 weeks. I don't really get cramps just a big gurgle then I need to go the toilet. Also my flare ups seem to last week's! I'm not constantly on the toilet it's just when I eat. About half an hour after eating I'm on tge toilet. The nausea is driving me mad. Does anyone else get this and is there anything I can take to help? Peppermint doesn't do anything for me

nausea is not a primary symptom of ibs, though those with ibs do sometimes get it, i think it is more a reaction of the body to what is going on in the gut if that makes sense. (if you had nausea alone you would not be diagnosed with ibs).

if you are in the uk try motillum - you can buy it over the counter. the active ingredient - domperidone -  is quite good for nausea in some people.

the reason you have to go after you eat is that eating triggers the gastro-coelic reflex. try eating small bland meals. if youre still going have an immodium about an hour before a meal.

My doc said more likely to suffer with nausea if your body is weak anyway and I have the constitution of John Keats, I am a light weight drinker, I suffer severe migraines regularly which can make me sick. A change in the seasons gives me a nosebleed so as you can see my body struggles on a daily basis. I have noticed those with more robust systems do not have the same problems.

Oh wow that's very interesting as I'm the same. My nose bleeds daily from allergies. I suffer badly with my sinuses and headaches. I too get migraines but not as many these days thankfully. I also suffer with low b12. I take tablets to boost the levels back up but then a few months later they drop and I've had trouble with low iron stores too. 😩

I used to have mine cauterised when younger as it would bleed so much. I am talking one hour like a tap. As I am now older it is nowhere near as bad but spontaneous nosebleeds are not unusual for me. I had one a few weeks ago. I do not have allergies just a weak system. I do not have sinus problems but when migraines strike I need to lie down in a dark room. It is the only cure and I have a gel eye mask. I have no idea what b12 is as just learning all about foods now here. I get differing opinions from docs which is annoying. The last one I spoke to said limit apples where previously I have been told apples the best fruit for you. Butter has too much saturated fat but margarine is bad in other ways. No wonder we struggle.

Oh no sounds terrible for you. B12 is a vitamin. You can become deficient in it through bowel problem, diet and stress. Mine must be stress! Leaves me feeling very tired, breathless and painful legs amongst a number of other symptoms.

Yes I find different doctors have different opinions. I guess it's trial and error finding out what your body can take as we are all different.

It was but those long nosebleeds are a thing of the past now but I remember when I first started working for a company mid 90's my nose bled so much they had to call an ambulance as I think my manager just thought I would drain all the blood out as it went on and on an on etc.

Just looked it it up I eat smoked salmon so I should be fine but I am sure there are many vitamins I am not getting. I learn in here. I only feel like that when I have spent 20 - 30 mins in the loo and that is not a joke. I had a meeting the other day after being slightly Ill and very slightly, 25 mins so 4 or 5 visits, and only 15 mins to the meeting walking and by the time I arrived I was nodding off in the chair and I had to ask for 2 or 3 glasses of water. I was just drained yet when not spent time in the loo I can walk 10 miles easily.

It is all trial and error. I bought green grapes the other day as read on here but so far they have not been a roaring success. Every time I see something I will try as like you say trial and error. What I need is a guaranteed food that when I eat it within 3 or 4 hours I am in the loo. I have tried many but not found it yet.

Oh no that's awful. See I don't have it that bad. Mine is usually after food and I work from home so I guess I'm lucky In that way. Have you tried charcoal tablets? Someone mentioned them to me but they didn't work. Definitely is trial and error and knowing your body but it is also a trying process. Are you from the UK?

Neither do I now except when the seasons change dramatically I get a nosebleed so if mild and then very hot I may get one. I have been looking to get back into work again hence why trying to fix myself now as do not want to start with illness if I can help it. I started looking close but now having to widen my search which could spell disaster further down the line but we'll see.

That is why I am here to learn so on that basis what are charcoal tablets as never heard of them? I have found something which may walk I don't know salted almonds. Not a fan of salt but all they had in. I am trying to understand my body but some days I at a loss and just want to scream at it Stephen Fry says "porridge plus prunes = poo" what is wrong with you. I am probably the only person who ate prunes last week and remained constipated. The only cure was an interview. That did the trick so maybe I need to stab myself with an adrenaline pen daily smile. Which obviously is just a joke. Indeed I am. I thought the I don't like to complain line gave that away. American men love it and I sit next to them and say my food is fine even if it is bloody horrible.

At the beginning of my IBS, I was very constipated so I tried prune juice several times a day.  It worked a treat!

The first time I tried about 3 or 4 years ago it worked too well hence my panic in that 5th Feb to 22 Feb window I tried everything including prunes 5 days in a row. My body has had it.

They are supposed to help with trapped wind . They didn't work for me and they are huge tablets! I'm a wuss and can't swallow tablets so these are a bit struggle for me. I just need a new body haha

I do not seem to have a problem there. It is the next step but ok at the mo but won't last. I can swallow migraine tablets like paracetamol but anything larger and I may struggle. Obviously if it was a cure I would cram them in no matter what the taste.

I hear that re: new body smile

I have to take loads of water to swallow tablets because my throat fights like crazy to push them back up.  Sometimes, I have to soak the tablet in water to get it down.  If I try to break them up, my throat acts up worse because there are more pieces to swallow.

Yes a few people have said to me over the years how easily I swallow tablets but migraines were so severe when younger with stays in hospital at times that I suppose pain killers became second nature but my father takes much larger tablets and even I think I could not take them. I do not go anywhere without strong painkillers so I am always ready.

I have not tried Buscopan yet as I was on prunes, then grapes now roasted salted almonds. I also take flax.

For my migraines I need something stronger then conventional tablets so I use Migraleve pink and yellow. The yellow are co-codamol is pretty strong.

Buscopan is very mild but it does deal with bad flare ups without side effects at least for me.
    • Posted

So do you only take Buscopan when you have a bad flare up or do you take regularly?
    • Posted

Initially I took it regularly three times a day and then I found I could ignore most of the pain and limit Buscopan to bad flare ups when the pain kept coming and making me feel sick.

That sounds good. I would not wish to become too reliant on medication. I have Migraleve for that. I might get some in for special occasions. Is this what my life has become. I used to have Champagne Cognac for special occasions and soon to be IBS medication. Oh the joy smile

I can't swallow any tablets. I have to swallow them with food! Very annoying.

I cab still enjoy wine too 😀🍷🍷🍷 but sometimes it can set my tummy off and give me very bad heartburn

Try taking a mouthful of water first then pop the tablet in and in theory once you swallow the water the tablet should slide down your throat with the water.

I risk it at Christmas only are:wine

i do still risk wine at Christmas but other than that it used to make me Ill.

I assume you mean the cocktail rather than the cheap vermouth

I used to make a mean cocktail but since I have cut alcohol out I am out of practice. I do miss an occasional sidecar but once again I relent at Christmas.

I usually have Martini and lemonade or sometimes Vermouth.  My cousin introduced me to Margherita cocktails in Italy which were very nice.

Hotel and supermarket wine are fine for me.  However, pub wine upsets my stomach for days and gives me heartburn because it is cheap quality.  My stomach has always reacted like that to poor quality alcohol even before IBS.

      Try this:

Cocktail glass in the fridge. Into your mixing glass add 75 Mls Bombay Sapphire gin, ice, 25 mls vermouth and stir gently to limit bruising, never shake and I mean never.

Place your strainer over your chilled glass from the fridge and pour. Garnish with lemon and enjoy.

Forget olives and vodka. Leave those to the Mad Men.
