Hi all I need some help. My husband's doctor diagnosed him with IBS and I just don't buy it. Tell me does this sound like IBS to you?
He has a near constant pain on his left side below his ribs. Sometimes when it's at its worst it radiates into his back. It is often worst when he first wakes up in the morning and eating usually makes to feel better. He describes the feeling sometime as being similar to feeling exremely hungry or like knots in his stomach (like being anxious) even when there is nothing anxious on his mind. It is worse when he is tired or stressed but can be sitting down having a a great relaxing time thinking of nothing to do with this pain and it starts up. Ultrasounds were clear. He's had endoscopy, colonsocopy, MRI and bloods were all good. He does have diahreoah often. There Is no difference with foods that we can find. We are desperate and grasping at straws so any ideas are very welcome. Also he has been off work for 10 weeks because of this because his job is strssful and it is not better. Thanks everyone.

Thankyou for the reply. I will definitley be back in touch should I ever get a diagnosis. However I've not eliminated any foods (as as I said I've never thought it was food related), but I'm going to start this weekend.... I'm starting with green Veg and onions, and I'm basing this first elimination on the fact my pain started after eating a stir fry which contained courgette as a replacement for noodles and also contained broccoli and onion, I also cook a lot and use onions in lots of things. I feel it's pointless but I have no other options so going to give it a go. X

Onions are a common trigger food in stomach complaints I don't think your food elimination trial is pointless because you have identified that your pain began eating stir fry.. This is progress and you could have identified a pattern. Did you add soy sauce because some people can be intolerant to that too?

Finally a clue. His lipase is high. Don't know what that means yet though as his MD never even mentioned it. We only found out because we asked to have copies of all recent tests for our records and to bring to a Naturopath.

High Lipase along with high Amylase can give a firm diagnosis of Pancreatitis..i hope you can get an answer soon...best wishes...

We now paid for private stool testing (we are in canada). He has high calprotectin 787, normal is <50. High stearocrit 33%, normal is <15% and low secretory IgA 6, normal is 510-2010. Looking a lot less like IBS. Second opinion in 2 weeks.

We think we've got it. It looks like it is SIBO. Stool test showed some pretty elevated bad bugs, just waiting on the breath test to confirm.

Nope. We have a bunch of herbals on the counter from a ND. Waiting for the breath test though just to doubly confirm. Don't want to get rid of it before the test confirms for sure. I think we'll be doing both the regular antibiots and then after the herbals and FODMAP diet. Looks like the recurrence rate is pretty hight with SIBO but I'm confident we are going to kick it's butt.

I know this post is old, but i felt compelled to reply... I have been having the exact same symptoms for a few weeks now. I have had ibs for years, but this new odd hunger pang pain that radiates to my upper back under my right shoulder blade has been extremely bothersome. I already was diagnosed with splenic-flexure syndrome, which is a chronic condition that causes gas to become trapped under the left ribs. It is extremely painful at times. only bentyl will help me when I'm having an attack because it stops the spasm. This newest condition is most likely related to silent or bile reflux and sliding hiatal hernia. None of these things usually show up on tests. When I get the hunger pains I know to immediately eat almonds, bread or a banana and it gets better. They thought the back pain was from my gallbladder, but since eating helps, no. I think its from esophageal spasm caused by the reflux. Anyway, its hard to put together because its most likely a combination of things like mine. The distress is causes creates a vicious cycle of anxiety, pain, acids acting up, more anxiety due to the symptoms it causes, more pain, acids, ect... things I've tried are digestive advantage, slippery elm, aloe vera juice, chamomile and fennel, magnesium citrate, bentyl(works great for gas trapped by spasm) I am gluten free, no dairy, low fat and lots of soluble fiber foods to help with intestinal motility. Have you found any more answers? Most people are stumped with my condition because food helps my pain. its very odd.....

Gastritis can cause shoulder blade and back pain too and this condition does show up on endoscopies. Some people with stomach ulcers find that eating helps their symptoms.
