Implant & Weight Gain.. Help???

Posted , 55 users are following.

I'm 24 and I am on my second Contraseptive Implant the first implant i had for 3 years never really caused any trouble I was stilll energetic,I manintianed a healthy weight and my mood swings were managebale... until the last few months, i expected this though as the implant was due to be renewed.

So I thought getting the implant for a second time would be a piece of cake (mmmm cake!)....Boy was I wrong!!!!!!

I had my second implant inserted 4 1/2 months ago and since then I have gained 24lb (10.8KG) no matter how much exercise or healthy eating i do the weight will not shift! I am constantly tired, my skin in spotty and dry, My sex drive...pfffft! what sex drive?? my hair is thining, my mood swings are ridiculous and because of this i hate myself.

I find it astonishing that such a small thing can make such an impact on my life.

I have been to the doctors and had a full MOT everything else internally is fine (apart from my weight) so my GP & I have both agreed that it is best that the impant be removed as it's the only possible cause of all of this..

How long will it take to get back to normal & lose weight once the implant is removed?

Has anyone else suffered with these side effects?

Will this weight ever go away (of course i will work hard)?

Am I a crazy chick?

Thanks in advance for any advice xxx

Im so glad that im not the only one. Im due to have my 1st ever implant (nexplanon) out next month and was seriously debating on whether to have another one as since i have had mine put in ive put just over 2 st on. I havent changed my eating habits but i do alot of walking and occasionally go on the tredmil but couldnt figure out why id put so much weight on and nothing i do helps me lose it. I love the fact that im covered for 3 years but i dont think its worth the body image issues i now have. Not going to get another one put in now i know its got to be to do with the implant

      Hi,

I know I am the same. I like the implant as once its in you can forget about it but the weight issues aren't the best and I am struggling to get weight off too even though i am sticking to a diet!  I need to go on something else but I am not sure what!

Hi, I was put on Nexplanon too.  Can I just check that you are from the UK?

      Thanks

Yes im in the uk. Im due to have my implant out on monday and i honestly cant wait. I spoke to my doctor and she said that she wouldn't recommend the implant at all. Im rubbish at remembering to take tablets every day so the pill wouldnt be good for me but i am thinking about having the patch but going to look in to it first

      Hi,

It is amazing how many women had had issued with the implant that you can see through this forum.  I am having mine removed on Friday and hopeing to see if I feel better without it and then I will decide what to try next! Its a nightmare finding something that suits.  I haven't heard of the patch I will look into that.

      Thanks,

      Amanda.

Oh no, that sounds horrible, I was a bit lucky there most of the weight I put on was on my stomach, hips and thighs. All that weight will soon shift once it's removed

Oh dear that isn't good either.  I am due to have my removed this Friday but need to try something else.  Only by coming off it will I know it is definitely that has put the weigh on!  Other than the weigh issue I have found it fine

    Hi,

I had the implant put in in September 2015, I have gained 1 stone since then, had to buy bigger jeans! And had terrible spotty, greasy skin. After having the implant put in I started eating healthier and doing a lot more exercise but I felt like I was gaining by the day!

I had the implant removed this morning, it wasn't painful at all and I felt instantly better, like a fog had cleared from my brain that I didn't even realise was there until it went away. I don't know if I will lose the weight yet as it's too early to tell but I would advise anyone who is suffering side effects to get it removed, you will feel better instantly x

      Hi,

Thanks for your message this is really good to know.  I have been on the implant since December and have put on two stone!  I am trying really hard now to watch what I eat and have started running but its definitely not coming off as quick as it used too before the implant! I am glad that you are feeling better.  I have also got greasy skin and get spots and my hair gets greasy alot too!  I really don't know what to do because I like the fact its in your arm and you can fotget about it and that I have no period on it.  Are you going to try anything else now?  Please would it be ok to keep in touch with you and you let me know how you weight loss goes?

      Many thanks,

      Amanda x

I've got an appointment with my doctor to see if I can get sterilised but I'm 36 and have a 12 year old so that's the right choice for me.

I will keep you updated with the weight loss, hopefully there will be some soon. I hope you find something that suits you and makes you feel better x

Yes, all the time! I also had swelling in my fingers to the point it felt like my skin would split, family and friends started to comment on how ill I looked and my legs would ache like I'd been running for miles even when I'd done nothing x

That is good to know that you felt tired too as I do all the time and can't keep awake at night, I can't even keep awake through a movie with my partner.  I am 37 and am hoping to try for a family at the end of this year so was thinking of staying on the implant until then but at this rate with the rapid weight gain I will have no self confidence left.  My only othe option is the mini pill which I have been told is the same thing apart from one is put in your arm and the other is in a pill or there is the coil I will see how I get on until 24th June - might be worth coming off it to see how I am and then just using something else in the meantime. Please do keep in touch if that is ok as I would like to know how you get on.  Hope that you continue to feel better.

Thanks for your help and advice.

I'm asleep by 9pm every night but then I'm waking up all through the night and feel awful in the mornings. I'm feel better by the minute today and I only had it out at 9am, I feel so much brighter and alert and full of energy, I can't wait to see what the effects are over the next few weeks. I tried the pill before the implant, kept forgetting to take it so it wasn't right for me. Also had the injection, that had the same effects as the implant, my friend has just had the coil and seems to be getting on ok with it but it's not something I've ever fancied having myself. I hope you find something, everyone is different and only you will know whats right for you, good luck x

Just a quick update, I had the implant out on Wednesday morning. By Wednesday night my partner commented on how much thinner my face looked. By Thursday morning I looked and felt thinner all over and was feeling much better generally. I've had a few stomach cramps like a period is about to start but nothing major and nothing has happened yet but now its Sunday and I generally feel so much healthier. Not weighed myself yet and I doubt there's been any actual weight loss as its too soon but all the bloating has gone down and I feel happier in my self

Hi, I'm just wanting to see the progress on your weight loss? I've had the implant in for 3 years I'm to scared to get it taken out. But I have gained almost 4 stone in them 3years... I'm going to book for it to be removed tomorrow morning. I really want to go back to my normal self. I'm such a different person. I wish I had read this sooner as I'm scared now it will be hard to shift the weight! I had my child 4 years ago and I was just under 11stone I'm now 14.8 it's so depressing 😩😩😩😩😩😩
