Increase or not?

Posted , 10 users are following.

I've been on sertraline 50mg for 11 days now and no improvement so far, I know it takes a lot longer to work, but my doctor just informed me he would like me to go up to 100mg at week 3 as he said 50mg is too low and isnt the therapeutic dose and said he thinks it's not high enough to help with my anxiety/depression as well as 100mg.

just wandering if I should increase or still wait it out a lot longer to see.

just dont want to waste time on a dose that isnt strong enough to help

thanks x

    Hi there,

I upped from 10 mg Citalopram to 20mg eight and a half weeks ago, and it is only over the last week that I have begun to feel a benefit in the increase. Personally, I'm gonna wait the full 12 weeks and assess. I'm only just seeing a more consistent improvement.

I know we're taking different drugs, but remember, they take their time to show their full effect.

It's so annoying knowing when to make an increase, but I'd give it a little while yet, at least to four weeks, likely to eight. Kind of depends how functional you are and what you have to do in your day to day existence.....do you go to work?etc.

I'd err on the side of allowing more time, or else you don't really know how 50mg is for you.

thank you ruth I appreciate your reply x

I think I'm gonna stay on my dose for now because I seem to have really gone downhill the past 2 days and am not coping very well so the increase in and anxiety and stuff from increasing would be way too much for me right now I think.

thank you, hope you are starting to get better yourself.

did you ever feel like you were going backwards when you was on the lower dose? I'm on day 16 and it's getting very difficult x thank you x

Yes, I did, and it was really annoying because 10mg worked fine for me three years ago.

I went back on 10mg at the end of August last year. It seemed to be okish, by January I thought it was working but to be honest, it felt a bit patchy, not quite how it'd worked before. By May I had completely crashed again....I think I lasted that long because from Jan to March I'd had regular acupuncture, which kind of held me together and helped with the anxiety.

May and June this year were horrid and I took some time out of work, faced up to the fact that 10mg wasn't helping much at all now and updosed mid June.

I'm now beginning to feel a lot more stable but it has taken nearly 9 weeks. Weeks 6 and 7 of this updose I was all over the place and ready to throw in the towel, but it has suddenly started to work a bit more consistently.xxx

I was originally on citalopram and it stopped working for me after about 4-5 years and I found the higher doses made my BP and heart rate really bad so had to swap to sertraline. I'm glad you are starting to feel like it's working for you now. it takes so long for them to kick in!

sounds like the acupuncture helped a little for a while. I've heard it can help.

I think I'm worrying because I'm getting worse and not better.

what was week 6 and 7 like for you? if it's ok to ask?
