Interaction between citalopram and rhodiola rose.... increase in side effects?

Hi all, have been stabilising slowly on 10mg citalopram over the last 3 weeks.

I had the bright idea of adding rhodiola to my daily pill regimen. It's a herbal supplement, an adaptogen, and it has sedating/antidepressant qualities.

I used it in conjunction successfully with cit back in 2016, but I think that was when I had stabilised on the cit at 5mg, and I didnt have any adverse effects. In fact, it really helped me through a stressful patch.

However, since I started it up 3 days ago, I've been feeling a bit worse. I've got fluey symptoms, sore throat headache, and have been feeling really tearful and a bit more agitated.

Now this could just still be the cit becoming established. But have decided to stop with the rhodiola as it's still cit early days, and perhaps the herbal supplement is somehow heightening cit side effects, especially if they both work on serotonin system.

Was just wondering if anyone else out there has taken this combo and has noticed any interaction?

Thanks lovelies. Wishing you all a good day.

Oh Ruth, sorry to hear this. I think your right with the fact that its a herb that affects serotonin, especially as your still adjusting to your cita dose, which will make you sensitive to any changes. I hope you feel better soon x

      Thanks so much Paula.

I feel like I'm constantly complaining right now, I sound like a right moaning Minnie...... But am just fed up. Never mind, we will all get through this.

A friend has just told me there is a bit of a lurgie going around at school. Oh the joy! So it could actually just be a bug, but am wary, cos the symptoms are def like a serotonin increase.

But am still gonna stop the rhodiola until the cit has had a few months to become established. I think that's for the best.

How you doing today. Unbelievable that you weren't given dosage info for drops! It's absolutely outrageous how these powerful drugs are treated in such an off hand way 😡

Moan away Ruth, you have a good reason to, and alot of people on here will understand. Flu symptoms are very similar to side effects from these.

Me? Well, am seriously looking at going cold turkey under medical supervision. 3.5 years of side effects, and a year of tapering plus all the health problems I had had from meds has taken its toll. (For anyone reading this DO NOT GO COLD TURKEY) My history isnt typical to what I read on here, and will discuss this with my doctor.

Paula..  I used to read most of the posts months ago, but rarely read them anymore.  I'm really curious, can you explain what side effects you've had for 3 1/2 years on this wonderful stuff??

Hi Jojo, if you go into my name on here, you can find my very first post, called does anyone recognise these side effects. Take into account I was on a cocktail of meds.

Its really strange the timing of your question Jo, am in bed off work at the moment with parathesia down my right side numbness in my face, nausea, pressure and pain in my head, which is a hemiplegic migraine brought on by the cita drops. I am waiting for another call from my doctor as have just ticked 30 (yes 30) side effects on the patient sheet that I get on and off.

Acombination of different drugs combine with celexa will do it to you..I learn the hard way..all along I was too quick to blame the celexa for my severe joint pain ..and all it was was a combination of the celexa with the ziplocone that cause it..go figure..

I know that when I was guinea pigging with ssris the withdrawals /side effects from the previous ssris stick around for many months..I know from talking to patients at my phychiatrist that withdrawals from different types of antidepressants hang around for many months some say a year or more.

My stupid gp try to misdiagnosed me with arthritis ..and my husband kept saying I think it's the sleeping meds.because every night right after the ziplocone combined with celexa the pain got worst..

What a nightmare all these bloody tables are I wish I’d never touched any of them . I’ve spent thousands on different tests all with no answers and being spoke to like crap by every specialist . Just prey getting off Zopiclone will help

Oh it will..trust me ..my pain was excruciating..as soon as I came off the pain was knock off by 75 percent it took two weeks for it to feel normal..mind you ziplocone on it's own doesn't cause that problem but when combine with celexa for some folks like us ..it mimics arthritis..of the joints..

Hi Lois sorry to bother you again I’ve stopped the Zopiclone for 2 nights now but I’m back to relentless jolts and jerks in bed .This was the reason for Zopiclone in first place.Any ideas? I’m sure this is a side effect of cit for me ?

Try taking your celexa in the morning.also my phychiatrist prescribed xanex .25 with a Benadryl combine..or try Ambien..the best so far for me is the xanex Benadryl when needed..
