intermitent gross hematuria

Hi, I'm male - 26

I've been avoiding going to the Dr's for a while now, as I'm very scared.

Every few months, I have a day or so where I urinate blood. Also some bloodclots. No real pain.

Then it will seemingly dissapears for a few months, and will then return for a day or so.

I'm assuming it's something terrible.

Other symptoms seem to be frequent/weak urination.

Sometimes a mild/dull pain in one of my testicles.

Has anyone experienced this? WHy would it be every few months like this?

I plan to call my GP tomorrow as it happened again a minute ago for the first time in a few months and i'm plucking up the courage.

I'm petrified of the cystoscopy. (pain and embarassment)

I had my urine tested for an unralted issue a while ago, and it was apparently 'clean' (even though this was only a day after i'd been urinating what looked like almost pure blood)

How can this be??

What will the process be? (im in the UK)

Will gp send me straight to a specialist?

Even if my urine has no blood in it tomorrow, will they still be able to test it for cancer cells?

i'm writing this mostly for my own benefit so that I have a record of things to look back on.

Got my paperwork come though today.

I need to bring yet ANOTHER urine sample with me. the 3rd one now. What's the point in that?

I have my ultrasound on friday at 9.50am

I need to drink 1 1/2 pints of water at 8.50am

I need to go to the obsteatrics ultrasound department (I've taken a tour of the hospital online and I can't find this department at all. Hopefully on the day someone can walk me too it? I have very bad bearings and could get lost in my own house)

My cystoscopy (*gulp*) isn't until 4pm.

I'm assuming the ultrasound won't take 6 hours?!

This will be in the endoscopy suite.

      Hi Mike

no an ultra sound will take a few minutes .. not long..

      maybe 10 mins or so..

with an ultra sound everyone has to have a full bladder of water ..

      dont worry yourself ..

      Hi Mike

drinking water helps the scan results..

      in general ..

Urinary Tract or Renal Ultrasound Scan (includes male prostate) This is also known as a KUB scan (kidneys, ureter and bladder)

Preparation: drink at least one litre (2 pints) of water approx 45 minutes before your appointment.

Do not empty your bladder before the scan.

If you do not have a full bladder, it may not be possible to have the scan.

good luck.. all will be done and checked and you can get some relief after

      Hi Mike

      oh bless you sweetie ..

you did the right thing and found out what was wrong ..

so now, its onwards and upwards .. get it removed and all will be good again..

maybe the cystoscopy was more painful because of the tumour ..

      try not to worry.. ..

i am sorry you have a tumour but i am glad you went to Docs and can get it sorted ..

      you will be fine ..

relax tonight and the discomfort will ease .. can you take a pain killer ..

I've taken some neurofen plus, but they're not even touching the pain.

Going for a wee is impossible. The second I start it hurts so much like i'm having an injection, and then some conkealed 'gel' that was used on my comes out. sad

Does a 'tumour' mean I have cancer?

Can't believe that I have to go though it all again (albeit asleep) and feeling like I am now again.

I have no idea why it hurt so much. I've got a decent threshold for pain based on previous experience, but even when they started injecting the gel it was extremely painful for me.

Really feeling down. Thanks for all of you help by the way

      Mike

the gel will be from the procedure so dont worry about that, they would of used gel..

and no tumour doesnt mean cancer ....

they didnt say it looked cancerous did they.. its more likely benign ( non cancerous) ..

you will have a prickly sore sensation when peeing .. it will feel tender for a while.. after cystoscopy..

Mike ... you should pat yourself on the back and be kind to yourself, i am so pleased you didnt ignore this .. and soon all will be sorted..

have you had general anesthetic before ?

how long do you have to wait

if they thought it looked cancerous Mike they wouldnt be making you wait, you would be in straight away, so thats a good sign, so dont worry

He said it would likely be in a few weeks. Think he said overnight stay.

He didn't say whether he thought it was cancer or not - only that due to my age the chances of it being 'superficial' were higher.

I asked him if my various other tests I had before that could rule anything like cancer out, and he said 'No'!

Why the hell did I bother taking all of them bloods tests/urine samples/and an unltrasound for then?!!

I thought the idea was they could test for cancer from my blood?

I read beforehand that after the cystoscopy, peeing would be a bit painful, but mine feels so bad i'm hoping that they've not damaged my insides or something! Can't work out whether it's 'obstructed' or whether it just feels like that because i'm instinctively stopping peeing when I start due to the 'stabbing' pain

      Hi Mike

i suppose they do test urine and blood tests first dont they..

i cant say what blood tests they did on you .. or why.. not sure ...

your in UK yeah.. I am in southern spain ..

the peeing should feel better after a while ... they say drink plenty of water to flush out the bladder post procedure, but if it hurts then i suppose it puts you off.. but try if you can..

did they tell you exactly where the lump was or didnt the explain ..

'tumour on the bladder wall' is I think what he said.

Can't bear the thought of more and more examinations. I really don't think I can do the cystoscopy again, but I read that people need to keep having them done once a problem has been found as a sort of 'check up'.

Maybe I can always say ''only if you put me under general anesthetic''

      Mike

some have local anesthetic for cystoscopy and a relaxant like a valium

      maybe ask about that ..

please dont worry yourself .... i think yours was maybe more painful due to the lump Mike ...

next time you will be asleep so wont feel a thing .. so dont worry..

you will wake and its all over .. so no need to worry about the next one as you womt feel a thing..

Thank Goodness you have been and they know what the problem is. The bloods would have been to get an idea of your general health and any inflammation/infection you might have.  The scan would have looked at the state of health of your ureters and kidneys. Pee samples are almost always requested as routine. I am sorry peeling is uncomfortable. If you find that you are not peeing out a similar amount to what your are drinking, then I would advise to contact your GP of NHS 111 incase your have gone into retention. That can be very painful. I would have thought if they felt your tumour was anything worrying, you would be scheduled for surgery very soon. If you can, speak to your Urologists secretary and push for your surgery as soon as possible. You don't have to have the surgery done at your local hospital, you can always ask to be treated at another hospital if it means you getting your treatment earlier. After the op your mind will hopefully be put to rest and you will be able to put this ordeal behind you, finally.

Nearly passed out going for a wee last night. Just crumpled onto the cold bathroom floor and lied there. This morning, it's very slightly better. I think i'm peeing a normal amount, but only in small stops and starts - I think mainly due to the pain of trying to keep a constant stream.

I'm assuming I have cancer now which is something that even feels horrid to write. Not ready to die just yet.

Would this tumour explain botht the hemeturia and my more frequent /weaker urination?

I'm now dreading the operation - mainly the pain after since i'll be under general anasthetic. This is all so much for someone who suffers from anxiety in the first place!

I really can't stress how painful the cystoscopy was. I was having flashbacks last night as I tried to sleep. I don't know if it's anything to do with it, but I kind of felt that the guy doing it was being 'trained' by the senior guy who was behind him overlooking. I also heard one of the staff compain about one of the 'scopes'. However, even the gel hurt to high-heaven so maybe that was all erroneous.

All I can say is that it was absolutely brutal for me and I plan to never have it done again without being asleep.

      Hi mike

Dont assume things like that ...

Your tenderness will take time, maybe feel abit better later.. The peeing.

if your getting into a state and going to worry for weeks see your doctor talk to your doctor about your anxieties and fears, and the procedure experience you worry about.

He or she is there to help you.

Start a new discussion saying age 26 tumour found after cystoscopy and others with same can talk and maybe help ..

I have seen a few posts on here saying same etc..

      please dont worry

      Hi Mike

Deb has explained it so well.. and you must try and keep positive.

The terms tumor and cancer are sometimes used synonymously which can be misleading. A tumor is not necessarily a cancer.

The word tumor simply refers to a mass.

For example, a simple collection of pus is by definition a tumor.

A cancer is a particularly threatening type of tumor.

It is helpful to keep these distinctions clear, sometimes i think doctors should be abit more understanding and explain it better to people ..

this happened to me a few years ago, i was told i had a tumour .. like you i thought the worst, it was a simple cyst that went as quick as it came.

but i had to go back to see another doctor in my despair and get an explanation.. so try and relax up abit ..

what Deb suggests it good info ..
