intermitent gross hematuria

Hi, I'm male - 26

I've been avoiding going to the Dr's for a while now, as I'm very scared.

Every few months, I have a day or so where I urinate blood. Also some bloodclots. No real pain.

Then it will seemingly dissapears for a few months, and will then return for a day or so.

I'm assuming it's something terrible.

Other symptoms seem to be frequent/weak urination.

Sometimes a mild/dull pain in one of my testicles.

Has anyone experienced this? WHy would it be every few months like this?

I plan to call my GP tomorrow as it happened again a minute ago for the first time in a few months and i'm plucking up the courage.

I'm petrified of the cystoscopy. (pain and embarassment)

I had my urine tested for an unralted issue a while ago, and it was apparently 'clean' (even though this was only a day after i'd been urinating what looked like almost pure blood)

How can this be??

What will the process be? (im in the UK)

Will gp send me straight to a specialist?

Even if my urine has no blood in it tomorrow, will they still be able to test it for cancer cells?

Sorry to hear. How many years/months were you having intermittent bleeding? I'm worried because I had the same issue in September (21st). A whole 24 hours of blood in my urine. Completely through the stream, not start or end. With very, very tiny fresh clots towards the end. I've been waiting for my appointment and still haven't received it yet. NHS are useless. I've not had any blood since and that was the only time I had it. No pain when passing but abdominal pain at the front from time to time and slight pain when passing that lasts for 5 days on and off. No stone that i'm aware of.

Hi, please don't just leave this. My experience of the NHS is that referrals get lost all the time. Get on that phone NOW and chase. Phone your Urology department and if they haven't received the referral, get straight back on to your GP. Blood in your urine is not normal and needs checking out. It could very well be something simple but it needs to be checked out. I had blood in my urine and it turned out to be hydronephrosis which cannot be ignored. Please phone the hospital today.

      Hi,

Yeah I have an appointment tomorrow with my doctor to check it up. I created a separate discussion regarding my issue so if you have any thoughts in there, that would be useful. Thanks for the info.

Hi, just wondering if you could respond to my question regarding how long you were bleeding for prior and also how long was in between each successive bleeding session? Does not bleeding for 3 months rule out cancer? I've only had this once and it lasted a full 24 hours but nothing since. Cheers.

Over the course of maybe 6 months, I bled maybe 6 times? Sometimes only a drop of blood at the end. Sometimes only at the beginning. Sometimes straight through. Then I'd be fine for a few months.

I've spoken to experts since, and there's no real pattern so it's not worth investigating.

So, No. Not bleeding for 3 months doesn't rule out cancer.

However, it's very unlikely that it IS cancer, too. Much more likely a stone or an infection or something else. I was unlucky. Story of my life.

      Get it checked out.

Thanks for your reply Mike. I haven't passed a visible stone but get sharp abdominal pain the morning after I drink alcohol sometimes. One more question, did your blood also last a full day or did you just get maybe one pee a day where there was some blood? They already tested for an infection back when I had it, and it was clear. Thanks.

It tended to be 1, maybe 2 pees per day. Never a whole day. (not that it matters at all in terms of ruling anything out)

Oh Mike just read through this thread.  On Tuesday this week I visited my GP with gross haematuria - it was as if I was passing just blood.  I managed to get a sample and GP confirmed this and arranged for sample to be sent to hospital, blood tests and urgent referral to urologist. GP advised me that bladder cancer needs to be ruled out.

Well the next day - hospital rang with appointment - next Tuesday, which was a lot sooner than anticipated so really worried now.  I need ultrasound and cystoscopy.

I do not havepain, just really tired and discomfort when passing the blood.

I assume the GP ruled out infection?

There's still a number of things it could be.

Although I imagine it'll be no day at the beach, cystoscopys tend to be a fair bit 'easier' for women than guys. (shorter urethra and no prostate getting in the way!!)

So try no to worry too much about that aspect.

      keep me updated.

      Hi elizabeth

i had a cystopscopy a few years ago and I never felt a thing, so dont worry about that part and an ultra sound is painless..

Relax yourself .. I did and all was painless ..

wish you well, its only routine, and they are checking all okay

try not to worry.. I was the same once and all was okay in there ..

      big hugs

      Hi! How are you doing??

Although i'm still not fully recovered (still a few pains, mainly if I pee without consiously slowing down my urine flow) I feel OK at this second in time. Playing sport again and back to 'normal' for the time being!

I will be having my next 'check up' in a few months. General anaesthetic. Rigid (the big one!) cystoscopy.

I'm praying that there's no recurrence and also that the recovery won't be as bad as it was the first time around! I'll be very scared again when the time comes, but for now, i'm getting by!

Hi Mike, that's good to hear. At least when you have this next cystoscopy you know what to expect and that you will recover. Hopefully that will make you relax more and it won't be so much of an ordeal. All the very best to you. I'm so glad you are on the right side of all this.  Take care young man.

I have just read your post after I experienced blood clots in my urine a few days ago.  How are you doing now?  Did the urologist ever pin point the cause of the clots?
