Internal vibration sensation - caused by stress??

I've found several forums where there have been posts from people experiencing this disconcerting feeling of an internal quivering or vibration but none of them are current, so I wanted to see if anyone else out there is having the same experience and can share an insight into what might be causing it.

I started to get this feeling of internal vibration when I was mainly lying in bed and then occasionally if I shifted position it might last for 30 seconds or so before disappearing. That was about 8 months ago. Now I feel it every night and during the day as well quite often. The other day after a short walk of a few hundred yards followed by a period of standing still it felt like the ground was vibrating  because it was in my feet. It seems to move around to different areas of the body - sometimes I feel it in my legs, an arm, torso - it's quite random but often felt when I've shifted position in bed. At first I thought it was circulatory but now I think it's probably neurological. I thought I was having palpitations but an ECG showed nothing abnormal. I've also had a full spine & brain MRI as I've been having other strange symptoms of occasional numbness and sensations of burning and cold areas of my arms/hands and legs/feet and a sore tongue which comes and goes and often feels like I've just cleaned my teeth with menthol toothpaste when I haven't. I thought I had all the signs of MS, but it hasn't been diagnosed. I've also had a number of blood tests for immune issues, evoked potentials and nerve conductivity tests. Nothing! The MRI does show a lot of wear to my cervical vertebrae and two anterior spondylolisthesis - one cervical, one lumbar, so I wonder if my spinal issues could be the cause. My neurologist was doubtful. He also couldn't explain the vibration sensation except to say that it can be caused by a migraine, which I certainly haven't had.

I just don't know where to go with this now.  My GP isn't interested and puts everything down to stress which I AM under it's certainly true to say, but I don't think she's right. I've had to pay for all my neuro investigations as a result because she won't refer me or do any more blood tests etc.  I'm trying homeopathy, osteopathy and acupuncture as I want to find something that will relieve these weird symptoms and prefer to avoid drugs if I can.

I'm 58, eat reasonably heathily, no alcohol, only 1 cup of coffee a day and my weight is normal. I broke my wrist badly at the end of August last year which is when my problems all seemed to start. i

I also wonder if the metal plate that was used to fix the fracture could be causing some kind of strange reaction.

If anyone else is having these symptoms please let me know if you've been able to identify the cause and how to deal with it.

I’m so glad I found this discussion. I’ve been feeling internal vibrations in my arms, legs, torso, and neck. It’s the scariest thing and it only happens at night when I’m trying to sleep or in the mornings when I wake up. It’ll go away if I switch positions but only for a few seconds and I’ll feel the vibrations again. When I feel my neck trembling it seems like my vision moves along with it. I recently bought a house and switched to a day schedule as I worked nights for 3 years. And ever since then I’ve been having anxiety attacks. So I’m not sure if it’s somwthing neurological or if it’s something to do with anxiety. I just started taking b12 and I’m hoping it helps. But I feel better knowing I’m not the only one feeling these weird sensations.

I'm sorry to hear that you're also having these weird sensations. It sounds much the same situation as me as I also had a period of significant stress which seems to have started the vibrations off sporadically at first, but over two years later I now experience them every night. The difference with me is that they mainly happen when I move after lying still in bed, with the exception of the ones in the torso which seen to come on spontaneously. None last for long - mainly around 10 or 15 seconds fine vibration sensation in the limb that moved before fading away.  I also used to work nights for several years, although that's a few years ago now.  I can't help wondering if it's something to do with an over-production of adrenaline in the system, although I don't know if any of the tests I've had have checked that. It's true that B12 can cause strange neurological symptoms, but mine was tested and found to be normal, so I know it's not that in mycase, but my Vitamin D level was unusually low though. Good luck with the B12 - I will be interested to know if it helps make these freaky feelings go away.

I too have this, and it's been freaking me out. I'm 49. Vibrations throughout body. Thought it was due to coming off the sleeping pill I'd been on for an embarrassingly long time (Unisom, an antihistamine), but actually the tremor feeling started first. Only at night, at first, now during the day too. Worried about Parkinsons and MS, Sally4Edgar it sounds like you were tested for all this and came back negative? Crazy sensation and worrying.

Yes I had various non-invasive tests for MS and simple office tests for Parkinsons but the results didn't show up anything specific. It is weird, and could be caused a host of other things that conventional testing won't show up like chemical or food sensitivities. I am a poor sleeper usually getting by on 6 hours or less most nights without much daytime tiredness as I've got used to it over a good number of years . I do wonder whether lack of sleep could be a big factor and how many other people who get these vibrations aren't getting their ideal 8 hours kip.

But lack of sleep is so widespread. And the internal vibrations are not. I had a complete brain scan (normal) and the physical tests for Parkinsons (same). Two neurologists recommended against doing an EMG test for a myelin (nerve sheath) related problem, it just doesn't seem relevant, as vibrations present on both side of the body, and appear in different spots. (I am still getting an x-ray of my neck to make sure it's not a spinal injury, but I'm almost sure it's not.) I'm getting used to the vibrations. They come and go. There just doesn't seem to be any indication that this is the beginning of a disease that will get worse and destroy our lives. In the words of my doctors, it is very likely benign. Living healthier lives, cutting out stress and caffeine, these feel like good things to do anyway, if not directly causal to the condition itself. Really interesting to hear others going through it, though.

Same happen with me... I'm 20 years old and it happing with me for 3 Month now . i am feeling like my whole body is shaking and vibrating now days feeling shakiness is little bit disappearing but vibration won't, i think i will die

    • Posted

It's crazy-making, I know. BUT: it does get better! It really does. And... this is weird, because when it first kicks in, you think you'll go to an insane asylum if it keeps up... but once you realize you're not dying, that it's not a symptom of something terminal, that it comes and goes, and with decreasing frequency... when it kicks in, it's not so horrible. I can almost ignore it, at this point. It's unnerving, but that's it. And once the symptoms themselves don't panic you, I think it helps break the cycle. I now get the feelings mostly when I'm low on sleep, or under immense, immediate stress. Then they last for a stretch, at night, etc. But I pretty much ignore them.

You are not dying. I agree with others that this phenomenon is stress related. Stress anxiety can manifest in the sneakiest of ways. The vibrations have come and gone for me over the past 10 years. I have been managing my anxiety symptoms with a nightly dose of 25 mg of amitriptyline. This helps with sleep, panic attacks, optical migraines and a general

feeling of well being. Please see a doctor about anxiety symptoms. The more you stress about this the worse its going to get.

Stress and anxiety are not the same thing. You could have stressors that you're not even aware of that may or may not be causing the vibrations. I can't recommend enough finding a functional medicine practitioner to have things such as you vitamin status and gut health checked. Having said this, I admit that I'm seeing a functional medicine doctor now who has not figured out what's causing my vibrations. On the other hand, he has determined that my vitamin status is sub-optimal and I have significant gut dysbiosis--probably due to a course of antibiotics I took years ago just about the time that my vibrations started.

I am also taking amitriptyline which definitely helps. But I don't think it's because it's treating anxiety. It's just helping me sleep through the vibrations or dampening the nerve sensitivity that is resulting in the vibrations. (See my post earlier about visceral hypersensitivity).

thanks a lot ♥️♥️♥️ i hope so .... and also i can ignore them but when i think how long does it take, for a moment i am getting panicked

yes you are absolutely right... and i also took meds for one week and it's help me a lot.

It takes months or even years to go completely away, I've heard. But if you're not dying - who cares! It's a "feature". And as a warning sign to look at how much stress we all take on, it's perhaps useful (tho I fully believe stress is not the only factor, just an aggravating factor.)

what major side effect you face it for took Amitriptyline for past 10years . anti-anxiety and anti-depression meds destroyed me i don't take any of those but i am interested to take Amitriptyline doctor said Amitriptyline not for you because your weight is too much
